Public Process/Public Space: Case Studies in Planning and Urban Design Public Process/ Public Space Call for Submissions
Some of the most exciting public engagements in the nation are taking place in New York City, the Hudson Valley and Long Island as a result of the many urban design, community planning, landscape architecture, and architecture projects occurring. To honor these innovative initiatives, the Urban Design Committee of the New York Metro Chapter of the American Planning Association is preparing to launch Public Process/Public Space: Case Studies in Planning and Urban Design. The online registration for this Call for Submissions is due on September 16, 2005, and is eligible to all entities or firms that have conducted projects within the New York City, Long Island and Hudson Valley metro area. We invite urban design, planning, landscape architecture, and architecture firms, public agencies, community development corporations, civic associations, and all other relevant parties to submit model projects that demonstrate a strong connection between a robust public process and a physical plan or design - essentially projects that bridge the gap between planning and urban design.
- All of the submissions will be listed and illustrated in a "Design Process Yearbook" which will create a regional and national audience for the work.
- A selection of outstanding projects will be exhibited - the centerpiece of local, regional, and national, interdisciplinary events and conferences. This will include presenting the work at the national APA Conference in San Antonio in April 2006.
- One outstanding project in each of four project categories (Community Revitalization, Brownfield/Greyfield Redevelopment, Smart Growth Initiatives, and Legacy Projects) will be the focus of an evening-long working session with design and planning professionals as well as key agency representatives and decision makers involved in the advancement of the projects.
This initiative anticipates several key objectives and products which support our larger goals.
- To create a national audience for the most innovative work of the New York Metro area planning professionals.
- To distill the lessons that can be learned from a variety of best-practice case studies.
- To increase the shared understanding of the planning profession among design professionals and support new partnerships between other complementary disciplines.
