AIA San Diego Accepting Entries for Design Awards
The American Institute of Architects San Diego Chapter will be accepting entries for the annual 2005 Design Awards between Jan. 28 and March 25.
AIA said the program not only acknowledges outstanding architecture, but also serves to elevate the standards of good design, as well as inspire, educate and influence the architectural community. The competition is open to any licensed architect, or their firms, located in San Diego County, regardless of project location. AIA membership is not a prerequisite.
Award categories include residential, commercial, un-built, interiors, institutional, historic preservation, mixed-use, urban solutions and a special category, the divine detail. This last category refers to isolated architectural details worthy of consideration all by themselves for their unique, ingenious and/or graceful elements. It is an opportunity for established or emerging architects to display their talent on a smaller scale.
The program, instituted in 1960 as the "Honor Awards Program," was initially held on a bi-annual basis and became an annual event in 1982 in response to increased participation, growing AIA visibility and heightened design awareness. In association with SDG&E's "Savings By Design" program, participants may also submit their projects for the Energy Efficiency Integration Award. This category is open to completed commercial and institutional projects located within the SDG&E service territory. Projects are judged by how successfully and seamlessly they have integrated energy efficient strategies into elegant building design. This year, the AIA Design Awards committee has added the 25-year award, which will recognize architectural design of enduring significance that has stood the test of time for 25 years or more. Projects must have been designed by an architect licensed in the United States at the time of the project's completion and can only be nominated by members of AIA! San Diego. Entry forms will be available at http://www.aiasandiego.com The Web site will also feature tips and strategies for submitting projects for consideration. Award-winning projects will be recognized at the Design Awards Gala to be held on May 7, 2005 at the Salk Institute in La Jolla.
With more than 70,000 members nationally, the AIA provides tools and resources to help architects meet the challenges of a more complex and competitive marketplace.
