Luminale 08: Call for Projects
Feel the Light!

What themes are in the air? What is on the minds of the people who will be streaming from all corners of the globe towards Frankfurt for the Light+Building? What is appreciated by the public? What projects are advanced by the Luminale?
Naturally all participants in the Luminale have a free hand in the shaping of their projects. The festival offers a competition arena. How much fruit is yielded by a given commitment depends upon any network mobilized on its behalf, word of mouth and published opinion. That's what makes the Luminale so exciting and so unpredictable in terms of outcome.
Ecological Correctness The great Zeitgeist-inspired themes are the efficient use of energy and intelligent lighting techniques. Whether or not these spell death for the good old light bulb remains to be seen. "Who has stolen from us the Milky Way?" asked iGuzzini over ten years ago and recommended product concepts to disperse the light-smog.
New e-materials Beyond the LED, material technicians with the OLED are venturing into Tomorrowland. The combination of new materials with light brings new aesthetics in its wake. Who would ever of thought that concrete was capable of glowing? Virgin territory of sensational promise is opening up here for the Luminale: "Alice in (Lighting) Wonderland".
Mediatecture Architecture is set in motion and begins to tell stories. It was the ever-fascinating technology of projection that first transformed buildings into screens. For some time now, though, it has been the buildings themselves that - as mediatecture - have begun to flicker.
Lighting Emotion Light is becoming interactive. Light changes colour. Light and colour complement one another to create spheres that evoke moods. Feel the light! High tech, high touch, high emotion. New techniques and scientific knowledge further the emotionalization of light both in- and out-of-doors. Light moods that move the soul, that are conducive to good health, that make it easier to work, that help celebrations succeed.
Public Lighting Design Light illuminates paths, creates light-networked landscapes, gives suburbs, squares, parks and promenades a new face. Light sets accents, lends meaning to living environments and provides orientation. Urban landscape - Urban lightscape.
Lighting Magic Metals and crystals, foils and glass fibre add glimmer and glamour. High-tech and luxury form glittering alloys. Imbued with the magic of flame, charged with a subtle eroticism, the random play and diffraction of light take on an unwonted fascination. Light can be minimalist but also barococo...
Light my home! The home is important as a place to recuperate, a haven from the stresses of city life. Light is an elementary but oft neglected determinant of the quality of the home environment. Lights and lamps can radically alter the ambience of a dwelling. Lighting harmony. Less can also be more.
How to participate in the Luminale The ground rules in a nutshell: lighting manufacturers, planners and designers can register their Luminale projects with the project bureau (Projektbuero Luminale): luminale westermann-kommunikation.de. The closing date for registration is the 24th December 2007. The project must coincide with the Light+Building trade fair, which runs from the 6th to the 11th April 2008; it must be accessible to the public and make some contribution to lighting culture. No right to insist upon the inclusion of a project in the Luminale programme exists. The content and financing of a project is the sole responsibility of the person(s) or organization(s) registering it. There is no participation fee.
