Waste Tires Design AwardsThe purpose of this competition is to advance the concept of sustainable building and use of waste tires in building and landscape products.
The participants in the competition will develop prototypes of building or landscape products designed and crafted with tires, crumb rubber and/or other tire derived materials from California's waste stream.
The desired outcome of this competition is to assist in the development of markets and new technologies for California's waste tires.

California generated approximately 33.5 million waste tires in 2002, according to a report by the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
About three-quarters of California's tires, or 25.1 million tires, were diverted to constructive uses in 2002, but 8.4 million tires were shredded and disposed of in California landfills.
Product designers have an opportunity to create new products from a resource many would see as waste.
To turn used tires into useful products, tires are processed into shredded products or crumb rubber.
