Architecture and IdentityAn international conference on the making of cultural identity in architecture will take place December 6 - 8 2004 in Berlin.
The conference will aim to reveal the mechanisms of constructing the “own” and the “foreignR 21; in an international, global context.
Representatives from a wide range of disciplines including history, sociology, anthropology and art history are welcome to contribute.
The conference will take place in the House of World Cultures (Haus der Kulturen der Welt) that has been built by Hugh Stubbins in 1957 as a congress hall, the contribution of the USA to the International Building Exhibition (IBA 1957).
With its elegantly swinging roof line and its free plan, the building has become a symbol of the optimistic spirit of post-war Modernism.
Since its inauguration, the House of World Cultures has been hosting conferences and art festivals with a particular interest in global cultural exchange.
The building is one of Berlin’s most noted sites and conveniently located close to the Reichstag parliament building and the city center.
