PLANYC 2030 New York City Green Building Competition

PLANYC 2030: New York City Green Building Competition

The Third New York City Green Building Competition seeks projects and ideas that promote the New York City as the pre-eminent cultural and sustainable urban epicenter.

Design projects are encouraged that integrate whole-building principles, employ the tenets of green building construction and end-of-life considerations, anticipate post-occupancy concerns, and complement the community in which they reside.

"Green building is now in the mainstream here with visionary and innovative construction projects gaining a full head of steam all over the city," Regional Administrator Steinberg said.

"This competition helps create more visible examples of building green in the mosaic of everyday city life."

"Promoting energy efficiency and environmentally friendly design in both old and new buildings is critical to our future, and the core of PlaNYC, our long-term plan for a sustainable New York" said Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York "I am happy to announce once again that New York City will be holding a green building contest to highlight those who to create a greener future for New York through smart and innovative design."

"The aim of these awards is to recognise Victorian businesses and groups that are reducing their environmental footprint and using resources in innovative ways," Mr Brumby said.

"The five winners are standout examples of sustainability in action and I hope that other organisations will follow their lead as best practice examples in their respective fields."

Office Design Can Affect Productivity Study Shows

Office Design Can Affect Productivity, Study Shows

The physical design of workplaces around the world has long been a point of humour and frustration for employees, depending on their outlook, but new research suggests that different office designs can significantly help or hinder productivity in the workplace.

Tim Welsh, an assistant professor in the faculty of kinesiology at the University of Calgary, recently published an article in the Journal of Human Movement Science based on an experiment he carried out with graduate students that shows the design of office workspaces and proximity to co-workers, can play a big role in how much - or how little - you get done in an average day.

"You can't ignore the social benefits of having an open environment where people just feel better like they're not locked into a little closet," says Welsh, "but when you're actually looking at performing tasks, having other people performing tasks around you creates the opportunity for these interference effects to develop."

Creating a Sound Barrier for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Creating a Sound Barrier for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Approaching the Netherlands by air provides one with a particularly striking view of the Dutch polder landscape.

At the heart of the Haarlemmer meerpolder, in a unique area of reclaimed land situated below sea level lies Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

A unique area in many ways.

In this polder an area of 60 hectares will arise where Schiphol will bring together present and future, research and development, experiment and exhibition, teaching and learning.

It will be the place to be, a hub of international development in the area of water management and sustainability.

A junction where developments go so fast, you want to return time after time.

In this area Schiphol fulfils its aspirations to become one of the most innovative and sustainable airports in the world.

The most striking characteristic of this area will be the sound barrier parallel to the Polder runway, one of the five runways at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

This construction will solve the complex problem of reducing low-frequency noise emitted by aircraft during take-off.

In its dynamic environment, it will be one of a kind.

In January 2009, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol will award a sum of 750,000 Euros to the owner of the winning design.

The total prize fund for the competition amounts to 1,250,000 Euros.

Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful

Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful

The Nevada Museum of Art presents Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful, an exhibition showcasing Wright's skill in creating harmony between architectural structure and interior design while fulfilling the needs of a modern lifestyle.

During his remarkable 70-year career, Frank Lloyd Wright was committed to the development of a truly American style of architecture and to the creation of furnishings and accessories that enhanced the surroundings in his revolutionary spaces.

Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful presents more than 100 original objects including furniture, metal work, textiles, drawings, publications and accessories from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and other collections.

This is the first exhibition dedicated to Wright's decorative and graphic designs since the 1970s.

Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful will be on exhibit at the NMA from April 19 through July 20, 2008.

The phrase "house beautiful" was coined in the early 20th century to refer to a principle of architectural and social reform which proposed that quality of life could be improved by designing one's material environment.

Frank Lloyd Wright's fascination with this ideal was apparent early in his career when he designed the book titled The House Beautiful, and it remained central to his architectural philosophy throughout his career.
