Label USGBC Announces Winner of First-ever Sustainable Suite Design Competition

USGBC Announces Winner of First-ever Sustainable Suite Design Competition

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in conjunction with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and NEWH announced the winner of the first-ever Sustainable Suite Design Competition - a competition for interior designers to showcase the best hospitality design strategies that boast environmental responsibility while enhancing guest experience.

Because the hospitality industry is a large consumer of energy and water use, this competition aims to motivate sustainable practices industry-wide among newly built and existing hotels.

Submissions from 65 professional designers and aspiring young professionals were received, each one redefining how a high-performance, energy-and-resource efficient hotel suite should look and function.

The winning design came from the team of WATG, a destination design firm, who led the creative design and specification process, in conjunction with IDEO, an innovation and design firm who brought expertise on human-centered sustainability.

Their suite, Haptik, a Greek term meaning to experience interactions based on sense of touch, created a juxtaposition between sustainability and luxury by redefining the guest experience without sacrificing either ideal.

The nuanced subtleties of the design were choreographed around individual moments that engage the senses, allowing the guest to discover how environmental responsibility can be achieved personally and collectively.

Foster Partners Stone Collection for Luce di Carrara Launched

Foster + Partners Stone Collection for Luce di Carrara Launched

Foster + Partners has created an exclusive range of stone for Italian supplier, Luce di Carrara, which will be officially launched at the Cersaie exhibition in Bologna in September.

The range represents the first time the practice has collaborated with a supplier to produce a collection and will set a new benchmarking system to addresses the sustainability of stone's processing and transportation.

Each of the "Foster Kits" containing samples of stone, along with suggestions for accompanying materials, will be available in four different colour combinations: sand, grey, red and black and white.

The selections are based on the practice's experience using the material to create light-filled, high quality buildings and interiors around the world.

Stone has been prevalent in some of Foster + Partners' most notable projects, including the transformation of Trafalgar Square and the Sackler Galleries in London, the Joslyn Art Museum in the USA, the Musee de Prehistoire des Gorges du Verdon in France and, more recently, the spa of the Dolder Grand Hotel in Zurich.

Despite stone's natural longevity as a material, its extraction is known to be harmful to the environment.

The collection therefore seeks to mitigate these effects with the creation of a unique benchmarking system.

Examining its lifecycle from extraction to construction, the new range addresses the energy consumed by transportation, processing, packaging, installation, waste recovery and repairs.

Hilary Benn to Deliver His First Lecture to the Architecture Profession

Hilary Benn to Deliver His First Lecture to the Architecture Profession

The Royal Institute of British Architects announced that the Rt. Hon Hilary Benn MP, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) will be delivering his first direct address to the architecture profession about climate change at the RIBA on Wednesday 28 October 2009.

His speech is a highlight of the ongoing International Dialogues: Architecture and Climate Change lecture series, sponsored by Gleeds.

In this high profile keynote speech Mr Benn will focus on the essential issue of adaptation - for homes, commercial buildings and infrastructure - in reference to the DEFRA's UK Climate Projections (UKCP09) which provides information on the possible future climate.

UKCP09 shows we can expect warmer and wetter winters, hotter and drier summers, sea level rise, and more severe weather including heat-waves and flooding.

The speech will be followed by a panel discussion, chaired by RIBA President Ruth Reed, with leading industry experts on the challenges and opportunities for the built environment resulting from the changing climate.

"The groundbreaking UK Climate Projections 09, launched in the summer, show the scale of the potential challenge we face as a result of climate change.

For the first time they set out the probability of changes to our climate - giving us the ability to judge risks and plan our response," commented Hilary Benn.

AIA Launches New Documents-on-Demand Service with Free Trial

AIA Launches New Documents-on-Demand Service with Free Trial

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) today announced that it is re-launching its AIA Documents-on-Demand service, a Web-based service for both PC and MAC users that grants easy online access to download, electronically fill out and print 16 of the most popular AIA Contract Documents anytime, anywhere with access to the Internet and a printer.

This latest version is particularly well-suited for small practitioners and MAC users.

AIA Documents-on-Demand now allows users to populate some data fields on AIA Contract Documents with Adobe Reader software.

This is an upgrade over previous versions that required a user to print out a paper document and complete it with a pen or typewriter.

"The AIA is re-launching this improved service to save users time and money," said Young C. Chang, Director, Web-based Products.

"This latest service provides a cost-effective, simple Web-based tool for both PC and MAC users to obtain easy access to key documents."

AIA Documents-on-Demand allow users who do not need or cannot afford the convenience, extensive selection and ease-of-use of AIA Contract Document software to purchase and download only the AIA Contract Document forms and agreements necessary for a certain project.

Access to the service is free. The price per document varies from $4.95 to $19.95.
