Design Minded

Design Minded, a London-based focus group for the Design and Build Community, is holding its fourth Central London event this year on Wednesday 17 June at 6.30pm.

This event has threefold appeal; design and build focused networking in a conducive environment and the opportunity to win yourself a bespoke painting.

Whilst focused networking is the theme for all Design Minded "Open House" sessions, this event further extends the opportunities that meeting others from your sector brings because, this time, fellow-networking group Creative Alchemy are in collaboration.

Design Minded pride themselves on hosting events that provide an ideal environment in which business relationships can flourish and believe that good food, a hospitable venue and stimulating company are a good place to start.

This event, which is at The Yorkshire Grey Pub in Holborn, provides all that is needed for a hugely productive evening.

Now in its second year, Design Minded is a co-operative driven by its members' collective energy.

Acting as a forum for Design and Build professionals, it encourages individuals to pool resources, become involved in projects that explore opportunities for business and career development and to share their experiences at the series of "Open House" networking sessions and CPD "Focus Days".

Invisible Process Exhibition of Japanese Contemporary Architecture in Lisbon

Invisible Process: Exhibition of Japanese Contemporary Architecture in Lisbon

"(In)visible Process" tries to show in the Japanese context how an architecture project evolves - from the idea till its construction.

A mutating process that depends on the clients needs, on the architects concepts, among other public and private entities that participate and also determine in which direction the project develops.

To be able to show the "backstage" of an architecture project, gives an opportunity to the common audience to understand, to question and reflect on imperceptible issues vital on this process and to the Portuguese architects that can identify themselves and relate to this specific theme.

LEO A DALY Wins IIDA Award for Design of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Headquarters

The Washington, D.C. office of LEO A DALY recognized by the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of International Interior Design Association (IIDA) during its annual design awards gala.

The firm was awarded a Silver Award in the Commercial over 100,000 square feet category for its design of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) headquarters.

LEO A DALY provided architecture, engineering and interior design services for ASCO's new 123,000 square-foot headquarters in Alexandria, Va.

The building has been renovated to become a modern, cutting-edge space that helps to enhance the organization's cohesiveness.

Some of the features include a custom-designed glass-enclosed staircase in the main lobby, a high-tech conference center, lobby space and a variety of flexible work areas to provide optimal communication within the organization.

With alternative solutions for the intergenerational workforce, LEO A DALY designers provided quiet zones and active zones, and incorporated wireless and plug-and-play technologies into the design.

Features such as a unique floor plan with private offices situated at different angles as well as the use of different colors on each floor add distinctiveness to the space.

Glass was used throughout the interior, including hallway walls and office doors, to allow for a feeling of openness.

Surfs Up New Macaulay Sinclair Project Makes Big Waves

Surf's Up! New Macaulay Sinclair Project Makes Big Waves

Nottingham-based interior architects and designers Macaulay Sinclair has put their flag firmly in South Coast sand after customers began flocking to one of the UK's most exciting new bar and restaurants - Urban Reef at Boscombe Bay, Dorset.

Opened to the public on Thursday May 15th, Lead Designer John Macaulay has successfully blended a destination restaurant, decked external terrace, bar, cafe and deli outlet to deliver a vibrant social hub at the home of Europe's first artificial surf reef.

Taking the building's architecture as his starting point, Macaulay has used eye-catching design references and colour palettes from the 1950's including furniture, materials and finishes.

"We looked at, and were influenced, by 1950's transport posters, advertisements and seaside resort branding," explained Macaulay.

"As a result, on the ground floor, the colours are energetic and snappy, which also echoes the pace of the offering.

The design forms are simple, efficient and functional referencing the simplicity and functionality of post-war furniture.

We've also referenced post-war Britain's renewed relationship with the seaside by using beach huts and weatherboarding."

RIBA Trust Exhibitions on Portuguese Architecture and Roma Dwelling

RIBA Trust Exhibitions on Portuguese Architecture and Roma Dwelling

The RIBA Trust announced two exhibitions opening at 66 Portland Place in June 2009 - EU-Roma Dwelling and Overlappings: Six Portuguese Architecture Studios.

Focusing on Europe's fastest-growing ethnic minority - the Roma - EU-Roma Dwelling exhibition gives a unique opportunity to view a series of experimental projects conducted in Roma communities across Europe.

The exhibition presents previously unpublished visuals of Roma architecture, temporary settlements, and the materials and construction techniques of dwellings in Italy, Serbia, Romania, UK and Greece.

Focussing on the work of six young Portuguese architects' studios, Overlappings: Six Portuguese Architecture Studios exhibition highlights the breadth of practice in a country which continues to provide an exciting context for contemporary architecture - particularly appropriate in a year which has seen Álvaro Siza as the recipient of the Royal Gold Medal.

The exhibition, consisting of models and drawings, explores the themes of locality, territory, permanence and cultural significance in the work of this cross-section of Portuguese architectural practice, explored through schemes including a high school, art centre, library and hotel.
