Label Turf Tube Sustainable Seats Designed to Withstand Rough Weather

Turf Tube: Sustainable Seats Designed to Withstand Rough Weather

Urban Earth Design LLC has provided landscape architecture for some of the Valley's largest projects, including the University of Phoenix Stadium and Wild Horse Pass Casino & Hotel.

Now, it's looking to provide seats to take in the view.

The Phoenix company's Turf Tubes are sustainable seats designed to withstand the toughest outdoor conditions.

And they are popping up in some surprising places, including Phoenix Children's Museum and Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert.

Turf Tubes are a result of Urban Earth owner Michael Dollin's longtime goal to incorporate greener practices into his business.

He said the company had been looking for a sustainable outdoor furniture product that was durable enough for Arizona's extreme weather.

Prize for Putting People Not Cars First

Prize for Putting People, Not Cars First

An era of car-dominated street design has finally come to an end, as government guidance that puts pedestrians at the heart of street design has won a prestigious planning award.

Town planners awarded Manual for Streets the planning process prize at the RTPI Planning Awards 2008 in London.

The design guide was produced by a team including CABE and published in March 2007.

Since then CABE Space has been running street design and placemaking training sessions and providing direct support to local authorities developing their streets and public spaces in line with it.

With a focus on new residential (and lightly trafficked) streets, developers are realising the opportunities that it offers to improve the quality of new residential developments.

The Planning Inspectorate is using it to rule against poorly designed schemes.

It can also be used for residential streets that are being redesigned.

It replaces outdated guidance which put the needs of the car driver first and which has been applied pretty well everywhere ever since 1977, resulting in inhospitable streets which discourage walking and cycling.

RIBA Launches Springboard to Chartered Practice Initiative to Help Practices

RIBA Launches Springboard to Chartered Practice Initiative to Help Practices

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has launched a new initiative called Springboard to Chartered Practice, which is designed to help recently established practices to gain Chartered status, and so gain access to the associated benefits and services.

Practices will receive a comprehensive package including CPD seminar, a copy of the Good Practice Guide: Starting a Practice, and a dedicated telephone advice line for participants offered by the Practice Department, to assist practices in fulfilling the necessary requirements to become chartered.

The CPD seminars are planned for 31 March 2009 in London and 7 April 2009 in Manchester.

Topics covered will include business planning, marketing, fee bidding, forms of practice and tax and insurance issues.

Autodesk Unveils 2010 Software Portfolio for Building Information Modeling

Autodesk Unveils 2010 Software Portfolio for Building Information Modeling

Autodesk announced new versions of its software products for the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industries, which are designed to help increase industry adoption of the building information modeling (BIM) process.

Updated software in Autodesk's BIM portfolio includes Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 software, Autodesk Revit Structure 2010 software, Autodesk Revit MEP 2010 software, AutoCAD Civil 3D 2010 software and Autodesk Navisworks 2010 software solutions.

"In today's economic climate, firms need interoperable and flexible technology tools for building information modeling that can help them deliver projects more quickly and cost-effectively," said Jay Bhatt, Autodesk senior vice president for AEC Solutions.

"The 2010 versions of our software continue to deliver on the promise of BIM by further bridging communication between extended design and construction teams.

These powerful tools will help our customers more efficiently and productively solve their design and construction challenges and do so with reduced environmental impact."

Autodesk's 2010 software portfolio for building information modeling will help enable building designers, civil engineers, contractors and the clients they serve to more easily create and profit from digital design data and better communication across extended project teams.

Withee Malcolms Acura Design Studio Earns LEED Gold and Green Pride in Torrance Award

Withee Malcolm's Acura Design Studio Earns LEED Gold and Green Pride in Torrance Award

Torrance City Council and the Environmental Quality & Energy Conservation Commission honored Withee Malcolm Architects and their client, American Honda, for the design of the Acura Design Studio, which recently achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

The Green Pride in Torrance Awards are designed to recognize residents and businesses who go the extra mile in showing their concern for the environment and helping to make Torrance a better and greener city.

The story, however, extends beyond the recent recognition or the still uncommon LEED Gold status for a commercial building.

Honda, Withee Malcolm, and the City of Torrance have all made serious commitments to creating more sustainable environments through their initiatives.

In 2008, American Honda Motor Company, known for their fuel-efficient vehicles, earned five LEED certifications from the USGBC - one LEED Platinum, three LEED Gold, including the Torrance project, and a LEED Silver.

"We have embraced the green building program since 1999," says Barbara van Gaasbeek, national administrator of American Honda's green building programs.

"Although it takes an increased amount up front to build a green building, the payback is in reduced utility bills because of reduced water and electricity use.

So for the lifetime of a building, say 20 to 50 years, that's a lot of payback."
