SHH Applies Creative Thinking to Low-budget School Diner Projects

SHH have redesigned the dining areas of both a primary school and a secondary school in the Southampton area, creating complete spatial transformations on a very tight budget.

The two projects were carried out in close consultation with both The Sorrell Foundation and The School Food Trust: a government body created in 2005 and chaired by Michelin-starred chef, writer and entrepreneur Prue Leith, which aims to improve the quality of school food, promote the health of children and young people and increase take up by by targeting problem areas, which can range from menus to cooking equipment to the environments in which food is served.

"The most successful dining spaces are designed by young people in consultation with caterers and staff to create a student-centred space, that meets the needs of the school population and community," said Barbara Roberts, Delivery Manager at The Trust.

"Both the Cherbourg and Applemore pilots prove that well-designed and suitably-equipped kitchens and dining areas are solid investments for the future and contribute significantly to the whole school approach to healthy lifestyles and to the overall success of the school."

Understanding the importance of the lunchtime environment and listening to and working with young people, The School Food Trust embarked on a project to create new dining environments in schools across the country.

Magen H Gallery Opens New Space with Work by Contemporary American Iconic French Artists

Magen H. Gallery Opens New Space with Work by Contemporary American & Iconic French Artists

Hugues and April Magen debuted their new space, Magen H. Gallery, at 54 East 11th Street, with a significant exhibition of sculpture, furniture, and ceramics by contemporary American designers and by the iconic 20th-century French masters for which the gallery is well known.

The current exhibit showcases work by Forrest Myers, Terence Main, Howard Meister, François Stahly, and Pierre Szekely, offering visitors an in-depth look and an abbreviated preview of upcoming shows.

"What's exciting about the new space is that it allows us a flexibility we did not have before and increases our ability to enhance and forward the design conversation in the decorative arts.

This show represents a well-crafted, deeply philosophical human exploration, contributing to the art world as a whole," says April Magen.

Designed by leading New York architect Alan Wanzenberg, the new space doubles Magen H. Gallery's exhibit area.

With his emphasis on authenticity, craftsmanship, and design focus, the internationally prominent Wanzenberg, who has earned numerous awards, was the ideal architect to create the Magens' new space.

The launch reflects Hugues and April Magen's optimistic outlook, based upon their gallery's continuing success and economic strength.

Making Modern SAIC Graduate Design Exhibition

Making Modern: SAIC Graduate Design Exhibition

Showcasing design from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's (SAIC) department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects (AIADO), Making Modern brings together work by recent AIADO graduate students in the department's inaugural master's thesis exhibition.

Included will be special projects featured during Milan's Salone Internazionale del Mobile in April, the highly regarded "Objects for the Age of Obama," "2000 Watt Living," and "The Expanding Classroom," which will be joined by "Objects That Entertain Us," a collaboration with Dupont Corian that will move to Making Modern following the annual NeoCon World's Trade Fair, held in Chicago's nearby Merchandise Mart from June 15-17.

In antiquity, "modernism" meant confronting magic and replacing it with the plough, the sword, the house, and the ship.

For the thesis work presented in Making Modern, to "be modern" means reuniting with eco-scapes, city-scapes, and all the varied "'scapes" of conscience, technology, and mobility.

Making Modern will showcase buildings, objects, and systems where humans are part of the globe's many entwined layers - helping to choreograph this connectivity without the need for dominion.

Design Minded

Design Minded

Design Minded, a London-based focus group for the Design and Build Community, is holding its fourth Central London event this year on Wednesday 17 June at 6.30pm.

This event has threefold appeal; design and build focused networking in a conducive environment and the opportunity to win yourself a bespoke painting.

Whilst focused networking is the theme for all Design Minded "Open House" sessions, this event further extends the opportunities that meeting others from your sector brings because, this time, fellow-networking group Creative Alchemy are in collaboration.

Design Minded pride themselves on hosting events that provide an ideal environment in which business relationships can flourish and believe that good food, a hospitable venue and stimulating company are a good place to start.

This event, which is at The Yorkshire Grey Pub in Holborn, provides all that is needed for a hugely productive evening.

Now in its second year, Design Minded is a co-operative driven by its members' collective energy.

Acting as a forum for Design and Build professionals, it encourages individuals to pool resources, become involved in projects that explore opportunities for business and career development and to share their experiences at the series of "Open House" networking sessions and CPD "Focus Days".

Invisible Process Exhibition of Japanese Contemporary Architecture in Lisbon

Invisible Process: Exhibition of Japanese Contemporary Architecture in Lisbon

"(In)visible Process" tries to show in the Japanese context how an architecture project evolves - from the idea till its construction.

A mutating process that depends on the clients needs, on the architects concepts, among other public and private entities that participate and also determine in which direction the project develops.

To be able to show the "backstage" of an architecture project, gives an opportunity to the common audience to understand, to question and reflect on imperceptible issues vital on this process and to the Portuguese architects that can identify themselves and relate to this specific theme.
