![]() Castleford Bridge by McDowell+Benedetti Wins 2009 RIBA CABE Public Space AwardCastleford Bridge in Yorkshire designed by McDowell+Benedetti has won the RIBA CABE Public Space Award. The award, presented at a ceremony on Saturday 17 October, is sponsored by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), the government's advisor on architecture, urban design and public space. Presented to the architects and landscape architects of the best RIBA Award-winning public space in the United Kingdom, the award recognises the valuable contribution that a well-designed public realm makes to the quality of the built environment and to our daily lives. The RIBA CABE Public Space Award announcement was made on Saturday 17 October at a special awards ceremony for the RIBA Stirling Prize in association with The Architects' Journal and Crystal CG. It was introduced by Tom Dyckhoff, architecture critic for The Times newspaper. The winner was announced by Sir John Sorrell, CABE Chair, who presented the winners with a cheque for £5,000. "The Bridge over Castleford 'Bay' is a really engaging public space," said Sarah Gaventa, Director of CABE Space. "It provides a real meeting place for local people and has helped strengthen Castleford's relationship with its river. It is greatly loved and enjoyed by the local community who played a big role in its design, and it has pushed the definition of public space, proving that a bridge can offer as much as a street, public square, or park." more Castleford Bridge by McDowell+Benedetti Wins 2009 RIBA CABE Public Space Award design directory McDowell+Benedetti > Architecture Design Studios added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Centrifugal Villa by OBRA ArchitectsOBRA Architects recently completed The Centrifugal Villa - a residence located in Southampton, New York. The Centrifugal Villa is arranged around a hollow center, as if the heart of the house had somehow fallen outside its body. The string of subsequent spaces in its interior provide a comprehension of the whole by sacrificing their individual geometric cohesiveness to the fractured configuration of the entire composition. The experience of the interior is characterized by constantly shifting vanishing points, at the place of their collision in each crease of the plan, large openings cutting dormer scoops on the roof, centrifugally release the views out to the surrounding landscape. The house, defined by this idea rather than a formal imposition, cannibalizes the local "vernacular," distorting it through hexagonal introspection of the plan and the transposed proportion of the parts. Designed as wood post-and-beam structure, the exterior cladding is detailed with vertical board and batten seams to give continuity to the building exterior and encourage an uninterrupted rhythmic flow around the elevations. more Centrifugal Villa by OBRA Architects design directory OBRA Architects > Architecture Companies added by Levent OZLER |
![]() God Comes to Earth: Designing Sacred Spaces for Environmentally Sensitive TimesFor many religious groups, caring for the environment is not an option but a spiritual imperative. For such congregations, green design goes beyond building materials and systems to address the relationship of the building to the site and of the congregants to nature. The relationship of man to nature and nature to spirituality has dramatically changed in this era of environmental awareness. The program God to Comes Earth explores ways in which architects can design places of prayer that acknowledge this paradigm shif. event (ended) current design events more info cfa.aia... ![]() Green Day 2010: Schools Climate Action Day Doubles in SizeBritain's biggest day of climate action in schools - Green Day 2010 - aims to reach twice as many pupils as ever before, in over a thousand schools. The need to spread awareness about climate change is becoming more pressing each year. The organisers are aiming for Green Day 2010 to take place in over 1000 schools including at least 280,000 pupils, compared to 120,000 in 2009. CABE's supporting resource, Green Day: a climate change activity kit for schools, offers a huge number of ideas to help pupils to understand the link between climate change and buildings and spaces. It contains subject specific lessons, links to relevant organisations and activities for all the school. Green Day 2010 will be launched on 4 June to coincide with World Environment Day. Schools can hold Green Day events at any time throughout the following month. more www.cab... (29) added by Levent OZLER |
![]() Greenwich South: A Model for Lower ManhattanBased on the premise that Greenwich South, an area in Lower Manhattan bounded by the World Trade Center, Battery Park, Battery Park City and the Financial District, has the potential to complete Lower Manhattan as a fully-connected urban fabric, the Alliance for Downtown New York developed a study entitled Five Principles for Greenwich South: A Model for Lower Manhattan. These "five principles" are meant to encourage incremental change, suggesting intervention strategies on a range of scales and with a range of timeframes for implementation. The Downtown Alliance invited 10 teams of the nation's most imaginative and daring architects, landscape designers and artists to address hypothetical design challenges using the stated principles, and the results of these speculative explorations are on view at the Center for Architecture in the current exhibition entitled What If. event (ended) current design events more info www.dow...
