Label RIBA Higher Education Design Conference 2009 Delivering Projects in Uncertain Times

RIBA Higher Education Design Conference 2009: Delivering Projects in Uncertain Times

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Higher Education Design Quality Forum will be hosting its 2009 conference on Thursday 7 May 2009 at the RIBA.

Titled Delivering Projects in Uncertain Times, this year's conference considers Britain's higher education sector in the face of the current economic downturn, and the potential for positive areas of development for the future, as well as celebrating the role of design in supporting innovation in teaching and learning, reuse of existing buildings, procurement of new buildings and global participation.

The event is chaired by Ian Caldwell, Director of Estates at Kings College London, and speakers on the day include: Professor Murray Fraser, University of Westminster; Pooran Desai, co-founder of BioRegional; Tom Taylor, Vice President of the Association of Project Management and Miles Delap from Gardiner and Theobald.

"This event is aimed at users, managers, estates directors, designers, project managers and environmentalists," said Ian Caldwell, Chair of the RIBA Higher Education Design Quality Forum.

"We particularly recommend the day to university managers and users undertaking a major project for the first time.

We believe the day will be of interest to all those involved in change within higher education and we will show how building projects can be used as a catalyst to support this."

Framing Modernism Architecture and Photography in Italy 1930-60

Framing Modernism: Architecture and Photography in Italy 1930-60

Despite recent studies, the history of architectural photography remains in its infancy; in particular, little work has been undertaken on the photography of Italian Modernism.

This exhibition complements recent case studies on the Czech Republic and Hungary as well as other, more general surveys, to paint a clearer picture of the often shifting but symbiotic relationship between the two disciplines.

The selection of over 100 period photographs has been drawn almost entirely from the RIBA British Architectural Library Photographs Collection.

It has been curated by Robert Elwall - one of the leading writers and experts on the interrelationship between photography and architecture - and Valeria Carullo, Assistant Curator in the Photographs Collection of the British Architectural Library.

CABE Olympic Buildings Are a Blight

CABE: Olympic Buildings Are a Blight

The design for the London 2012 media centre could "blight the Olympic legacy," it has been claimed.

The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, the government's adviser on urban design, said it has serious concerns about the buildings.

It said the steel and glass structure covering 900.000 sq ft did not go far enough to help regenerate east London.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) said work on the external appearance of the two buildings is ongoing.

The commission said it had reviewed all of the key projects for the Games and in the majority of proposals has praised the ODA's determination to deliver good design and a strong legacy.

New South Australian Law Protects Architects Titles

New South Australian Law Protects Architects' Titles

Registered South Australian architects can breathe a sigh of relief that their titles won't be usurped by allied professions, such as draftspersons and building designers, as a result of new legislation brought in by the state government.

The title "architect" has become protected by law, which means that only qualified, registered architects are able to legitimately use the name.

The change comes after over a decade of lobbying by the Australian Institute of Architects and will bring greater certainty to consumers about the architectural skills they are buying.

Sarkozy to Unveil Designs for Paris of the Future

Sarkozy to Unveil Designs for Paris of the Future

Futuristic glass towers, monorails high above the traffic or an artificial island in the Seine are among 10 projects that could transform Paris in the decades ahead.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is due to outline on Wednesday what is billed as one of the biggest redevelopments of the French capital since Baron Haussmann carved grand boulevards out of the city in the 19th century.

The projects included in an initial selection go on display in the Cite de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine, the Paris architectural museum where Sarkozy first called for a "bold" design overhaul in September 2007.

Britain's Richard Rogers, who designed the 1970s landmark Pompidou Centre, Antoine Grumbach, a French architect who wants to link Paris with Le Havre on the Atlantic coast, or Roland Castro, who envisions a new business centre built on an artificial island in the Seine have presented designs.

The projects could enable Sarkozy to leave Paris with the kind of "Grands Travaux" beloved of past presidents such as Francois Mitterrand, patron of monuments such as the new National Library or the glass pyramid at the Louvre.
