 ASID Announces 2010 Board of DirectorsThe American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) 2010 Board of Directors took office Oct. 1, 2009.The 11-member board, made up of three officers (past president, president and president-elect), six director at large members, one Industry Partner representative and one Chapter Support Team representative, meet throughout the year to discuss issues impacting the interior design profession and the Society. "All professions are adjusting to the reality of an uncertain economic environment," said ASID President, Sari Graven, ASID. "This is the time when professional associations can emerge as true leaders.  Foster + Partners' Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House Opens in Dallas TodayThe new Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House in Dallas redefines the opera house for the 21st century, breaking down barriers to make opera more accessible for a wider audience.Responding to the Dallas climate, a solar canopy extends from the building, shading a fully glazed, sixty-foot-tall lobby which enhances the transparency of the building. This establishes a direct relationship between inside and outside, creating greater accessibility and thus a more democratic building. Beneath the canopy, which forms an integral part of the environmental strategy, a shaded pedestrian plaza creates a major new public space for Dallas, as defined by the masterplan designed by Foster + Partners and OMA for the AT&T Performing Arts Center. "This project is about the creation of a building that offers a truly democratic experience of opera for the 21st century," said Norman Foster.  Birmingham College Wins Best Public Building AwardJoseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College in Birmingham has won this year's Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award.The college's principal, Elly Tobin, says that never in their wildest dreams would the students have expected such a wonderful building. "They have been given something special and they want to do well and give something back." Nicholas Hare Architects have created a beautiful, protected and calm environment that belies its tough inner-city surroundings. An imposing continuous curved façade fronts a busy roundabout, but a tree-lined entrance leads into a sequence of inner spaces, including a leafy courtyard and semi-circular garden with a pond, which leaves traffic and noise behind. The impression throughout is of light and space, with glazed walls to the courtyards, double-height spaces and open plan breakout areas lit by atrium light wells. more www.cab...
