Label Sustainable Design Expert David Oakey to Lecture at NYSID

Sustainable Design Expert David Oakey to Lecture at NYSID

New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) will be celebrating Earth Day with a special lecture by sustainable-design expert David Oakey.

His presentation, Respect for the Future, will provide an in-depth overview of how nature can become a mentor for design and trace his transition from questioning the sustainability movement nearly a decade ago to becoming a leader in sustainable design.

Oakey leads global efforts in sustainable or "smart design" inspired by biomimicry, a discipline that applies nature's designs and processes to solve human problems.

He works with architects, designers, and business leaders to change their approach to the "design" process and reconsider materials, products, and processes within the entire business realm.

Shilo Engages Public Architecture to Design New West Coast Studio

Shilo Engages Public Architecture to Design New West Coast Studio

The filmmakers from creative production company Shilo recently collaborated with architects Jim Brown and Jim Gates, the principals of San Diego based Public Architecture + Planning, to design their new studio, which is located in the heart of downtown La Jolla at 7650 Girard Avenue.

Shilo was established in 2004 in Del Mar, California, and in New York City, by co-founders Jose and Danielle Gomez, Andre Stringer and Tracy Chandler, with Shilo East opening for business that year in lower Manhattan.

Since then, the Emmy Award-winning company's reputation for creating original and commissioned work that is powerful, provocative and visually extraordinary has spread internationally, and as a result, they have grown steadily.

With recent attention-grabbing projects spanning short films, commercials, music videos, a groundbreaking MTV public service announcement produced to aid the people of Burma, and many more high-profile assignments currently underway, following the opening of their new studio in Manhattan last fall, the partners decided the time was right to expand their West Coast operation.

"In our old studio, we had essentially run out of space," said Jose Gomez.

"After it was filled head-to-toe with animators and producers, it just wasn't very client-friendly."

"There were a few key things we wanted in our new space," Gomez continued.

"For starters, we wanted to keep a nice open feel to allow our artists and producers to collaborate easily and effectively."

Manchester Square by SHH

Manchester Square by SHH

SHH completed a new London office interiors scheme for a private company in London's west end, working closely with client-side design director Zeljko Popovic.

The Manchester Square offices are the result of a brief to create a "high impact, 21st century office interior with a strong personality" with more in common with a gentlemen's club than a traditional office space.

The requisite air of subtlety and elegance in the scheme is reflected in the complete lack of external branding at the company's front door.

Although the property was made up of a classic (and Grade II-listed) Georgian townhouse with a former stables and garage mews building to the rear, the client was very open to a sense of contrast for the scheme, favouring a highly contemporary treatment.

The inherited interior - also previously an office - was not particularly grand, but any standout details were to be retained.

The building has five storeys and the rear mews has two storeys, with the upper ground mews floor corresponding to the ground floor of the main space.

Not Business as Usual Energy Audits

Not Business as Usual: Energy Audits

This week's Not Business As Usual meeting, organized by AIA New York and the Center for Architecture, focuses on maximizing energy efficiency in existing commercial and retail spaces.

Representatives from New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) will explain how designers can utilize their Technical Assistance Programs.

Michael Leach, of EME Group, will lay out the process and case studies of Energy Audits conducted for real consumers.

These presentations should offer architects tools to improve the energy profile which they offer their clients.

The Sequence Arne Quinze

The Sequence: Arne Quinze

As a wanderer between the worlds of art, architecture and design, Belgian artist Arne Quinze succeeds in blending opposites and constantly generates crossovers between the most diverse disciplines.

With The Sequence he unites urban art and politics by designing a colossal sculpture in the city center of Brussels.

The 80-meter long installation made from wood and concrete connects the Flemish Parliament to the House of Representatives physically and symbolically, acting as a bridge between the public and the government neighbors.

Similar to his Cityscape installation, aimed to give new life to a once stagnant urban landscape, The Sequence is an artistic intervention in public space that promotes urban interaction and communication.

This book documents the dynamic artwork in all its facets from the artist's original vision to its implementation.

In addition to the striking photographs of both the construction process and the finished structure, The Sequence includes hand-drawn sketches and preliminary models along with an introduction written by Arne Quinze himself.

With The Sequence sculpture, Quinze has proved once again, the engaging power of art in the urban context and enthused visitors from around the world and inspired discussion between culture aficionados, politicians and residents.
