Recycled Office by i29

i29 Interior Architects created a new area in fashionable corporate responsibility for Gummo advertising agency.

As Gummo were only going to be renting the space on the first floor of the old Parool newspaper building in Amsterdam for two years, i29 convinced Gummo to embrace the mantra of "reduce, reuse, recycle" to create a stylish office space that would impact as little as possible on the environment or their wallets.

i29 developed a theme that reflects Gummo's personality and design philosophy - simple, uncomplicated, no-nonsense, yet unquestionably stylish with a twist of humour.

Everything in the office conforms to the new house style of white and grey.

All the furniture was locally sourced via Marktplaats (the Dutch eBay), charity shops and whatever was left over at the old office.

Everything was then spray painted with polyurea Hotspray (an environmentally friendly paint) to conform with the new colour scheme.

Universal Design Makes Homes Adaptable Except in France

Universal Design Makes Homes Adaptable, Except in France

When Jean-Yves Prodel, who lives alone and uses a wheelchair, bought a 20-year-old house in this town just north of Paris in 2005, he hired an architect to remake it following the principles of universal design.

As Mr. Prodel soon discovered, however, his architect had no idea what that meant; moreover, he made Mr. Prodel feel like a bit of an idiot.

"In France, if you say 'universal design,' people are totally lost," said Mr. Prodel, who started a universal design consulting firm of his own around the time he bought the house.

Most French designers and architects, he added, have little tolerance for the concept, which holds that products and buildings should be usable by everyone, without requiring glaring adaptations to accommodate physical differences.

MAPA Launches Design 09

MAPA Launches Design 09

The Mid-Atlantic Precast Association (MAPA) has announced plans for Design 09, a new awards competition that will honor architect and student designs that incorporate precast concrete.

The industry group established Design 09, the first competition in a planned ongoing series, to showcase innovative and effective use of precast concrete in the mid-Atlantic region.

Design 09 includes two separate competitions: one for professional architects and one for students.

Architecture firms, designers, engineers, contractors and others may nominate completed structures or in-design projects.

For the student Design 09 competition, faculty and staff may nominate a student design, or students may nominate their own designs.

Nominated projects must make significant use of precast concrete, must have been completed or conceived within the past five years and must be located in one of the states served by MAPA: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Design 09 honorees will be selected by a MAPA-designated jury of architects and other industry professionals and will be announced in October.

Winners in each category will receive a custom plaque and recognition in a variety of MAPA communications.

Architecture Effort Promotes Sustainable Design UH Green Building Components Initiative

Architecture Effort Promotes Sustainable Design: UH Green Building Components Initiative

Research and development. Industry partnerships. Recycled shipping containers.

The University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture is primed to sharpen and green the cutting edge of design and architecture with the new UH Green Building Components (GBC), the college's research initiative to design, develop and implement sustainable, renewable building components for the architecture, engineering and construction industries.

"This is unique because there is very little design-based research in our field," Joe Meppelink, adjunct assistant professor and faculty research coordinator for the college, said.

"We will be designing and developing prototype components that will look better and, more importantly, perform better and promote sustainable construction through component-based design."

The effort is funded by nearly $1 million in grants from Houston Endowment and the Meadows Foundation.

The grants, disbursed over the next three years, will allow the college to fund faculty research initiatives as well as purchase state-of-the-art digital fabrication equipment for the design and development of environmentally sensitive building components for commercial use.

Alvaro Siza Receives the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture

Alvaro Siza Receives the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture

The Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza will today receive one of architecture's most prestigious prizes, the Royal Gold Medal.

As part of the Royal Institute of British Architect's (RIBA) celebrations for its 175th anniversary, Siza will be presented with the award by Her Majesty The Queen at a private audience at Buckingham Palace, followed by a celebratory dinner held in his honour at the RIBA.

Awarded in recognition of a lifetime's work, the Royal Gold Medal is approved personally by Her Majesty The Queen and is given annually to a person or group of people whose lifetime's work has had a significant influence on international architecture.

The honour recognises the impact Siza has made on architecture; he is a major figure in European architecture who has remained true to his artistic and ethical principles and achieved a prolific portfolio of work worldwide, which remains rooted in his native city of Porto.

This accolade also recognises the contribution Siza has made to his home country of Portugal, from the low cost housing scheme for the local government of Evora, to the College of Education, Setubal (1993), the University of Oporto Faculty of Architecture (1993) and the Adeaga Mayor Winery (2006).
