A National Model for ADA Design and Accessibility Opens in Phoenix Arizona

A National Model for ADA Design and Accessibility Opens in Phoenix Arizona

Baldinger Architectural Studio, Inc. and Caliber Construction have recently completed the Disability Empowerment Center of Arizona (The DEC), a complex to be utilized as a national model for accessible design.

The master planned site consists of a 64,000 s.f. office building, a 4 level handicap accessible parking garage, and a future 44,000 s.f. specialized sport and fitness center.

Groundbreaking on the Virginia G. Piper Sports and Fitness Center is scheduled for March 2009.

The project was commissioned by Arizona Bridge for Independent Living (ABIL) under the leadership of Philip L. Pangrazio, Executive Director.

The DEC is a universally designed, accessible, transit oriented, non-profit disability services campus serving the Greater Phoenix area through the collaboration and partnership of similar minded disability-oriented agencies.

The DEC is an adaptive re-use of an existing 38,000 s.f. 1970's brick and stucco clad office building.

The existing structural skeleton was retained and expanded upon to create a state-of-the-art eco-friendly facility.

The dark and confined spaces of the existing building are now expanded by the use of floor to ceiling window walls, flooding the interiors with natural light.

Creative Industries Centre New Antony Gormley Sculpture Launch Today

Creative Industries Centre, New Antony Gormley Sculpture, Launch Today

Metropolitan Works, London's first Creative Industries Centre, opens today, Wednesday 4th February 2009.

The centre, designed by award winning architects Cartwright Pickard, is the only place in London to provide top facilities for designers, artists, architects and engineers to develop and realise creative and innovative ideas under one roof.

At its heart is £2 million of state-of-the-art digital technology, and to celebrate the launch leading figures including Antony Gormley, have produced new work for an exhibition exploring the extraordinary potential of this new technology.

His life-sized cellular geometric body sculpture in iron, weighing 450 kilos, is suspended by its foot in the centre's impressive Machine Hall.

Further exhibits include speakers by Tord Boontje, designer for Habitat, made of steel, swarming with rapid prototyped insects and flowers; and controversial designers Timorous Beasties have laser-etched scenes from urban landscapes onto bricks.

The free exhibition opens on 9th February until 12 March.

Completion of Coop Himmelblaus High School 9 Los Angeles

Completion of Coop Himmelb(l)au's High School 9, Los Angeles

The Central Los Angeles Area High School #9 for the visual and performing arts by Coop Himmelb(l)au has just been completed. The school will open for the new school year in September 2009.

The Central Los Angeles Area High School #9 for the Visual and Performing Arts of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is part of phase II of LAUSD's rigorous state bond funded plan to have 155 new schools built in its district by 2012.

Located on a 9.8 acre site on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, the school will be a comprehensive High School and in addition will offer courses in the Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Music and Dance.

Due to its central location the High School will be a part of the cultural facilities along the Grand Avenue cultural corridor, joining the Disney Concert Hall, Music Center, Colburn School of Music, Museum of Contemporary Art and the Cathedral of our Lady of the Angels.

To fulfil its mandate as a public facility in keeping with the spirit of the other facilities on Grand Avenue the school campus will include a professional performing arts theater for just below 1,000 visitors, a venue, which so far has been missing in the spectrum of performance facilities downtown Los Angeles.

The theater will be used for educational purposes, will be open to the public and for use by other institutions, and is equipped with a full stage, orchestra pit, back stage and fly-loft.

Flight Patterns a Forum on the Design Challenges of Urban Ecology and Biodiversity

Flight Patterns: a Forum on the Design Challenges of Urban Ecology and Biodiversity

In response to the crash of US Airways Flight 1549 into the Hudson River on January 15th, and to the growing number of "bird strikes" to aircraft in metropolitan areas, Van Alen Institute invites you to join Natalie Jeremijenko for a lively discussion and debate about the perceived threats of birds to public safety, and about the real risks and challenges we face in planning and designing for urban biodiversity.

Jeremijenko brings together a cross-disciplinary group from architecture, art, ecology, biology, and environmental planning and policy to better understand the plight of bird populations in the context of our struggles to balance urban infrastructural and ecological agendas and demands.

How might we rethink transportation infrastructures in relationship to wildlife restoration and conversation strategies in metropolitan areas and vice versa?

What are the consequences of wildlife species adaptation to urban phenomena, systems, and people?

How do we design for cohabitation?

Participants include Jeremy Edmiston, Architect and principal of SYSTEMarchitects; Paul Mankowitz, Biologist, Plant Scientist, and Director of the Bronx-based Gaia Institute; Eric Sanderson, Landscape Ecologist with the Wildlife Conservation Society and Founder of the Mannahatta Project; and Kim Tripp, Director of the Jamaica Bay Institute at Gateway National Recreation Area.

This program is free and open to the public; no reservations required.
