![]() Miami 2009: Urban CompetitionArquitectum announced the International Architecture Competition "Miami 2009", to be held from January 2009 to May 2009.For this competition the project in question, located at the end of Fifth Avenue leading to South Beach, in the Miami Beach Area, is a "Pier-Museum" which, pointing out to sea, will stand as a "horizontal monument" to all the immigrants (particularly the Cuban immigrants) who have arrived on these shores in search of a better future. To this end, this 100 meter long structure will point out to sea off Miami Beach and will house a museum in which the personal effects, souvenirs and photos belonging to the new generation of immigrants will be exhibited - those who came to the city of Miami from the 1950s to the 1980s in search of their own personal American Dream. ![]() Putting the Brakes on Bike Theft: Design Exemplars for Secure CyclingTwo new exhibitions at New London Architecture will launch a free online design resource featuring over a hundred case studies of cycling facilities and schemes from around the world, aimed at helping architects to "get smart quick" about bike theft and design secure cycling infrastructure for our cities.Putting the brakes on bike theft exhibits new bike parking designs that makes life easier for cyclists and harder for bike thieves. Cyclised Cities shares concepts that foster the evolution of civilised cycling cities. Over the last decade city cycling has increased year on year. Increases in cycle use have meant increases in cycle theft, the greatest deterrent to cycling after fears about road safety. However, in recent years a multi-agency address to this problem has helped catalyse a secure cycling revolution. Figures from Transport for London for the period 2005 to 2008 show, in London, cycling increasing and cycle theft decreasing for the first time this century helping to make our cities safer, healthier, cleaner and quieter places to live. more Putting the Brakes on Bike Theft: Design Exemplars for Secure Cycling added by Levent OZLER |
![]() New Store for Timberland: Westfield London, Designed by Checkland KindleysidesAs part of the brief for their new store at Westfield London, Timberland challenged Checkland Kindleysides to bring the brand's iconic tree logo to life and show their environmental values in action.Taking cues from the Timberland logo and the dynamic tree-like roof supports which form the architecture of the centre, we created a lattice of reclaimed timber branches that stretch the full 25m length of the side elevation, the 11m storefront and the 8.5m height of the store, wrapping the store in the brand's iconic logo. The facade creates such a strong brand statement that the fret cut steel signage merely acts as endorsement that this is Timberland. The structure creates interesting views into the store and the expanse of unusual shaped display windows allow almost every item of footwear to be showcased in a simple framework. While in the windows at the front of the store, displays are set against crafted, repurposed furniture and props. The 3.5m doors, constructed out of salvaged planks, open wide to flank the entrance and welcome consumers into the store. At the front of the store glass and slate topped display tables showcase the latest footwear and clothing ranges from Timberland. Above, a reclaimed beam allows for intriguing merchandising and lowers the focus in this 4m high store. The store is navigated by gender, signposted with graphic imagery, with womenswear located on the left of the store and menswear to the right. more New Store for Timberland: Westfield London, Designed by Checkland Kindleysides design directory Checkland Kindleysides > Multidisciplinary Design Consultancies added by Levent OZLER |
![]() Winning Project for the Kunsthaus Zurich ExtensionDavid Chipperfield's winning project for the Kunsthaus Zurich extension is a striking formulation of the plan for a 21st-century museum to meet the demands of art and the general public alike. The jury has now recommended that the project be further developed. From 16 December 2008 until 11 January 2009, Chipperfield's design will be shown at the Kunsthaus Zurich together with those of the runners-up - Gigon / Guyer, Max Dudler and Grazioli / Krischanitz - as well as all other submissions. The project submitted by the renowned architect David Chipperfield was selected by a large majority on 7 November 2008 as the winner of the competition for an extension to the Kunsthaus. The international jury found the design's pristine elegance offers the best solution to the planned museum's needs, as set out in the Competition Brief, in terms of both content and urban planning: the arrangement and construction of its exhibition rooms are convincing, its visitor management and operational organization are both exemplary, and it complies with all security provisions. It provides for outstanding lighting and, in conformance with the demands of building ecology, promises an excellent energy balance sheet. The design of its facades, conceived as modules and featuring logical details, is among the best of the solutions proposed. The construction's monolithic volume will lend a strikingly urban note to Heimplatz. event (ended) current design events more Winning Project for the Kunsthaus Zurich Extension design directory Kunsthaus Zurich > Art Museums added by Levent OZLER |
![]() Gilbert Rohde: Modern Design for Modern LivingThe pioneering modernist Gilbert Rohde was an innovative designer of furniture and interiors who attained near celebrity status across the United States in the 1930s and early '40s.Yet his reputation languished after the war until rekindled in the 1970s by new interest in mid-century modernism-whose forms his work anticipated. In March of 2009, the first comprehensive appraisal of the designer's achievements reaches bookstores nationwide. In Gilbert Rohde: Modern Design for Modern Living, published by Yale University Press, author Phyllis Ross provides a detailed account of Rohde's work and life in the context of the social, economic, and cultural circumstances of the first half of the 20th century. Some 190 photographs document Rohde's interiors and furniture-including prototypes-and an array of never-before-seen archival materials. These include advertisements, publicity shots, magazine spreads, and trade publications. Many have been drawn from previously untapped sources, including the Gilbert Rohde archive held by the designer's most important manufacturing client, the Herman Miller Company. more Gilbert Rohde: Modern Design for Modern Living design directory Gilbert Rohde: Modern Design for Modern Living > Furniture Design Books added by Levent OZLER |
