![]() Architecture Students Take on Urban Reality with Spanish Music CenterEight Cornell architecture students in an Arch 501 studio received real-world experience this semester, working on a new community music center to be built in Valencia, Spain.Students visited the site over spring break and met with architects in Valencia. "We wanted to share all of our doubts and our concerns professionally with the students, with a real site, real conditions and the environment of what the project would be," said Anton García-Abril, principal architect of Ensamble Studio in Madrid, who taught the studio with colleague Debora Mesa Molina. "We're working with the real needs of the city of Valencia. Reality in urbanism and architecture is so strong that we don't need to create any fiction around it." "We believe in the enormous talent of the students," García-Abril said. "Architecture is something very difficult to teach. You just can't transmit your point of view and your experience, but you can get them to take a lot of cultural interest and give them a little bit of guidance and stimulus to see how architecture works. We can show them how we look at life through our architectural vision." more www.new... (63) added by Levent OZLER |
![]() AIA Wisconsin Announces Design Award WinnersTen building projects have been recognized for excellence in architectural design by the 2008 Design Awards program of AIA Wisconsin, the state society of The American Institute of Architects (AIA).This year's award-winning architecture reflects a diverse mix of projects, including a waterfront museum, an entertainment destination, private residences, a housing development, a university research facility, an interpretive museum exhibit, a place of worship in the Northwoods and a commercial office building. These projects are honored for their creative, innovative and environmentally sensitive design solutions. The common thread among all ten projects is that they were designed by architect members of AIA Wisconsin. A jury of nationally distinguished architects from outside Wisconsin selected the award-winning projects. Members of the 2008 Design Awards jury were: Ronnette Riley, FAIA, New York; Kenneth Luker, AIA, North Carolina; and Paul Mankins, FAIA, Iowa. "The quality of the projects was impressive; and some will be recognized at the national level," according to this year's awards jury. "There are firms doing a lot of really good work, which raises the bar very high for the entire state. Wisconsin should feel proud about that." more AIA Wisconsin Announces Design Award Winners added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Quantifying Sustainability: A Study of Three Sustainable Building Rating SystemsThe American Institute of Architects (AIA) has released a study of three green building rating systems (Green Globes, SBTool 07, and LEED NC 2.2) and assess their effectiveness in supporting the goals of the AIA sustainability position statement. In late 2007, the initial results were shared with the three groups whose systems were reviewed. After receiving feedback, the study was modified and further refined into the final report. The purpose of this exercise is to offer analysis to both industry and the public as an opportunity to learn how three unique, creative and evolving green building rating systems resonate in various dimensions with the goals of the AIA position statement on sustainability and our goal to achieve carbon neutrality in buildings by 2030. "This study is not a report card or ranking of the various standards," said AIA Executive Vice President/CEO Christine McEntee. "The intent is to offer design and construction professionals an in depth review of the three systems with particular emphasis on areas for improvement in relation to more rigorous energy conservations requirements." "We reviewed these particular systems because they are the most broadly used in the U.S. market and they take a comprehensive approach to evaluating an entire building," added AIA President Marshall Purnell, FAIA. "With new sustainability continuing education requirements in 2009 for AIA membership the results of this study can help better inform our members and the profession on green rating systems as they relate to our carbon reduction goals." more www.aia...
