Label Architect Peter Pfeiffer Lectures on Greening the Kitchen

Architect Peter Pfeiffer Lectures on Greening the Kitchen

ALNO hosted a press breakfast Saturday, April 12 at their Chicago-based showroom, and building scientist and green architect Peter Pfeiffer spoke on key ways to green the kitchen.

Having implemented ALNO kitchen cabinet systems in a green home he designed in Austin, which was recently completed on Earth Day, Pfeiffer choose ALNO for their quality product, but also for their use of incredibly green materials and manufacturing processes.

Pfeiffer's presentation covered the importance of lighting and choosing low-watt fixtures in the kitchen to reduce energy use, including fluorescent and LED lighting sources.

He also relayed that refrigerators are the second highest consumers of electricity (next to air conditioners), stressing the importance of the Energy Star label.

As for cooktops, he favors induction cooktops as they use the 85% of the energy lost to actually transfer heat to the food.

Lastly, he mentioned simple tips including cooking meats on the outdoor grill, lessening the time spent running the dishwasher as boiling water pollutes the home's atmosphere as high indoor humidity levels encourage chemical interactions and dust buildup.

Underground Spaces 2008 International Conference on Underground Spaces Design

Underground Spaces 2008: International Conference on Underground Spaces Design

Underground spaces are becoming increasingly important for a wide diversity of uses by society.

They range from classical excavations to subway constructions, underground sport halls, power stations, waste repositories, underground cities, and many others.

Their construction techniques are also very varied, from open air excavation to newly developed injection methods.

The response of the underground structures on the imposed loadings depends on a number of parameters that sometimes are too complex or not fully understood, resulting to budget overruns or even failures that lead to loss of life or property.

Such uncertain cases need to be addressed and engineers should accurately predict the construction's performance throughout its construction and service life.

Plans for underground spaces to be used as storage facilities have, in many cases, proved highly controversial.

This is particularly the case when proposing to build a chemical or nuclear depository, but also applies to general waste.

The Conference will discuss not only the structural and environmental material characterization aspects but also the trends regarding the utilisation of underground spaces.

Moreover it will emphasise in its environmental aspects, the architectural characteristics and concepts that might be applied to make underground space an integral part of the city planning and a living environment.

Leon Krier Talks Sustainable Architecture

Leon Krier Talks Sustainable Architecture

The Prince of Wales's architecture guru Leon Krier talks with Jules Lubbock about the environmental merits of traditional buildings.

"The problem with metropolitan developments like London or New York is they are not a product of reason and voluntary decision, but are rather accidents. Like in London.

Of course this makes traffic lighter but it transforms the city into a privatised zone for a certain class of people. It is not an intended outcome but is an accident."

American Institute of Architects Sends Team to Help Fellsmere with Revitalization

American Institute of Architects Sends Team to Help Fellsmere with Revitalization

Helen Ross, a lifelong resident of the Hall Carter James subdivision, stepped out to get her mail Friday and ran across a group of architects from across the nation touring her neighborhood.

Six architects, composing the Sustainable Design Assessment Team from the Washington-based American Institute of Architects, are in town this weekend to help city officials and residents revive the community.

Hall Carter James, on the east end of Fellsmere, consists of five square blocks and has a population of 219 people, many at poverty level, records show.

Erin Simmons, head of the institute's Center for Communities by Design, said the team - working off a $15,000 grant - will focus on the subdivision but also try to help create an ongoing relationship between residents, the environment and their location.
