Label Layoffs at Frank Gehrys Firm Have LA Architects on Edge

Layoffs at Frank Gehry's Firm Have L.A. Architects on Edge

From offices near Venice Beach, Frank Gehry has designed some of the world's most eye-catching and acclaimed buildings, from Disney Hall in downtown Los Angeles to the Guggenheim museum in Spain.

But not even Gehry's world renown and design savvy are enough to insulate his firm from the slumping economy.

This week, the L.A. architecture community was buzzing about rumored layoffs at Gehry Partners and the prospect of job cuts at other firms across the region.

One Gehry architect told LA Now today that 23 workers were laid off in the firm's Venice office in response to the delay in the giant Atlantic Yards project in New York and the slowing economy.

Having made his name and an estimated 250m fortune with bold designs of glass and steel, he is moving to Switzerland "for lifestyle reasons" and for the "incredible countryside".

There he will live in an 18th-century chateau built in classical style.

Tord Boontje I Think Too Much of Design is Too Dumb

Tord Boontje: I Think Too Much of Design is Too Dumb

Dutch designer Tord Boontje believes that there's nothing wrong with making the world a little prettier.

With products such as his now-iconic Garland Light, a stylized metal vine that wraps around a bare light bulb, Boontje has played a major role in bringing a decorative edge back to contemporary design.

Whether drawing inspiration from forests, flowers or animals, he is also unapologetic about injecting a little fantasy into everyday objects.

At the same time that he designs for high-end furniture and fabric companies, Boontje has undertaken projects in partnership with artisans in developing countries.

Working with the Los Angeles home-accessories company Artecnica and its Design with Conscience program, he has developed lamps in Brazil and vases in Guatemala to help local artisans earn better wages.

Residential Estate in Dominican Republic

Residential Estate in Dominican Republic

The architecture and urban design firm A-cero, led by Joaquin Torres, has undertaken the project of a hotel and luxury residential complex covering an area of 1,400 hectares in the coastal district of Cumayasa in the Dominican Republic.

The project consists in more than 3,000 luxury villas, 3 hotels, 4 golf courses and a marina, providing a place to enjoy a variety of water sports, tennis and ecotourism, in addition to its unparalleled greens for golf lovers.

By the use of a contemporary design language, the project seeks innovation, making an architecture of details, tuning in the constructive elements to develop multifunctional spaces and resistant structures, taking in account the environment and context of the island where the complex is located.

The predominant building materials in the project wood and natural stone combined with steel and glass, the latter used sparingly because the weather and high temperatures.

The rooms are naturally ventilated, and their interior design allows an interesting play of light, shadow, color and rhythm, created with selected top-quality materials.

The main idea is to create a settlement of high environmental quality and low density, which incorporates native vegetation.

The landscape design follows a contemporary style that embraces the houses, scattered on a stair pattern, softening the impact of their presence and creating a dynamic appearance to the whole.

Ion Branding + Design announced the launch of Cut. Count. Compel. - the first beneficiary of the One Good Idea $25,000 prize.

The result of a yearlong collaboration between Sustainability Solutions Group (SSG) and Ion.

Count. Cut. Compel. is an educational initiative modeled on the success of the waste reduction movement's three R's campaign (Reduce. Reuse. Recycle).

"This initiative is intended to bring awareness to the role individuals play in climate change, and provide links to resources that will help Count one's contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, provide information on how to Cut GHG output, and resources to Compel others to do the same," said Ion principal David Coates.

Increasing public awareness on climate change and the frenzy over carbon offsetting moved SSG to develop educational tools and resources that address the collective amnesia around opportunities to reduce GHG emissions before they are produced, rather than offset them after the fact.

Ion developed the identity and mark for the campaign, in addition to the website creative.
