Exactly 100 years after Adolf Loos wrote Ornament and Crime, a manifesto that effectively relegated ornament in architecture to the peripheries of the discourse, "Re-sampling Ornament" takes a first step towards tracing its re-emergence.
For decades the language of architectural ornament has remained largely unspoken, but for a few memorable post-modern architectural experiments.
Yet from Owen Jones "Grammar of Ornament" to John Ruskin, Gottfried Semper, Louis Sullivan and William Hogarth - and contemporaries such as Kent Bloomer, a rich vocabulary of opposing and often contradictory theories exists to be readapted, re-sampled, and once again applied at the heart of architectural practice.
Oliver Domeisen's research at his unit at London's Architectural Association into the history and contemporary application of ornament in architecture has made it possible to embellish and enrich a mutual selection of new architectural projects with terminology drawn from many dictionaries; allowing for associations and groupings that can identify vital traces of ornament in current practice and at the same time rethink its boundaries, creating a new context within which contemporary projects can be redefined and rethought.

The Keating Hotel by Pininfarina, San Diego's premier boutique hotel, was named the project winner of the inaugural Earth-Minded Awards, presented by Hospitality Design magazine and American Society of Interior Designers.
The awards program recognizes exceptional sustainable design in two categories, hospitality projects and hospitality products.
Winners were honored last week in Las Vegas at Hospitality Design Green Day, a full day of conference programming dedicated to green design.
Submissions were judged by a group of esteemed hospitality designers.
"We are very proud of this award because it confirms that the Keating project outlines possible answers to the complex issue of sustainability - said Paolo Pininfarina, President and CEO Pininfarina Extra.
- When approaching a new project, from the microcosm of small objects for everyday use, through to the macrocosm of buildings, we always try to minimize environmental impact and relate people with the natural environment.
We did the same while designing the Keating."

LEO A DALY was honored for the design of the Nokia Latin American Headquarters in Miami, Fla. in the category of corporate spaces over 5,000-square feet.
The award was presented on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 in Dallas during the Design Ovation gala.
According to C. Mark Seiley, AIA, Vice President and Managing Principal of LEO A DALY Dallas, "Creating the new Latin American Headquarters for Nokia in Miami represented an exciting design opportunity for our team.
We are truly honored to have this project recognized for its design excellence."
Completed in the fall of 2007, the 25,000 square-foot office occupies the tenth floor of an existing office building located near Miami International Airport.
The project's design concept, "fire and ice" unites the geographic roots of the mobile phone communications company, which had its start in Finland, the organization's expanding presence in Latin America, and the office's physical location in South Florida.
With a focus on sustainability, designers specified environmentally friendly materials throughout and maximized access to natural light.

Johnny Wong and Miho Hirabayashi of FAK3, designed a series of edgy and chic serviced apartments with a work hard, play hard aesthetic, for the brand "Kush".
All are situated in regenerated buildings and aim to marry local Hong Kong culture with fun, contemporary design for its target audience of young management executives.
Along with developing the interior and façade, FAK3 worked on enhancing the brand through innovative design elements.
The first building situated on 255 Des Voeux Road West and consists of six units in a traditional Chinese walk-up building called a "Tong-Lau" style.
Designed to be a tribute to Hong Kong's urban panache, a cantilevered billboard reminiscent of the neighbourhood's signage anchors the building within its context.
Moving into the interiors, the bed area is dressed with "White Ivy" developed in China by FAK3, whilst behind the bed is the Light Fantastic-coloured neon room enhancers that mimic the moods of blue lagoon, green with envy, purple haze and pink candy, inspired by Hong Kong's nightscape.
222 Hollywood Road is intended to be the flagship property for Kush and offers a full time concierge.
The lobby is a dark space clad in sumptuous veneers with a huge holographic chandelier-floating inset into a niche in the 3m high ceilings.
The entry signage is finished in black mirrored stainless steel and features LED lighting, while gold plated details such as the kush door handle adds a touch of luxury.

Architects and designers SHH have created a new retail concept for the residential arm of prestigious global real estate company Savills, one of the world's leading property agents.
The first Savills office to showcase the new concept has now opened in Cobham, Surrey.
The new concept follows on from Savills' bold identity re-brand, created in-house in 2004, when the company decided to re-evaluate its UK high street estate, now numbering over 80 branches, and to begin a site expansion programme under the internal title of "2010 Retail Vision".
SHH were appointed to the project after an initial 5-way pitch of UK agencies and have been working on various aspects of the new vision since 2006.
Initial projects concentrated on a signage and fascia exercise and included a new exterior for the agent's Fulham branch, completed in 2007, before the focus moved on to a full new concept store at the brand new Cobham site.
"Savills was looking to reflect its new mid-market 'affordable luxury' focus and to underscore the fact that they offer the best houses in that price range", commented SHH Creative Director Neil Hogan.
"The design had to reflect a company that is discriminating, with an emphasis on great service and expertise, expressed through high quality cues."
