MAYA Design Develops Solar-powered Display for Phipps Conservatorys Living Building

MAYA Design Develops Solar-powered Display for Phipps Conservatory's Living Building

MAYA Design, based on Pittsburgh's South Side, has developed a solar-powered interactive display to be rolled out as part of the new Center for Sustainable Landscapes, a "living building" under development at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.

MAYA's prototype was designed to educate visitors about green technology used in sustainable building systems but it is also expected to offer performance data about the building, the natural environment around it and the activity of its visitors.

"This is a powerful computer with the power requirements of a plant," Joe Ballay, one of MAYA's founders who helped design the prototype said in a release. "Instead of photosynthesis turning the sun's energy into green leaves, our interactive display turns it into information."

MAYA developed the low-power prototype by using an "electronic paper" display developed by Cambridge, Mass.-based E Ink Corp.

Auckland Architecture Week 2009

Auckland Architecture Week 2009

Auckland Architecture Week is an annual celebration that includes exhibitions, movies and discussions covering a range of topics that fit broadly within the field of architecture and the built environment.

One hundred and twenty students from The University of Auckland's School of Architecture and Planning will compete in "TRANS-FoRM-ers", a competition based on the design and fabrication of "mobile architectures".

Auckland's first ever "architecture convoy", and a structure made out of 2500 condoms will feature as part of The University of Auckland's contribution to the forthcoming event.

"This is an important project for the second year students. They are required to realise something at a large scale that they then must show in public-that requires them to be very resourceful," said Kathy Waghorn, a senior tutor in the School of Architecture and Planning at the National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries (NICAI).

"As a group initiative, they also need to become skilled at negotiation and collaboration, both useful skills in the training of an architect."

Bloomframe Balcony-on-demand Hits the Streets

Bloomframe: Balcony-on-demand Hits the Streets

Bloomframe, the innovative window that morphs magically into a balcony at the touch of a button, is no longer a prototype.

This revolutionary and multi-award-winning design is now in production.

The first models are destined for an apartment building in Arnhem in The Netherlands.

The product's creators, the Amsterdam-based Hofman Dujardin Architects explain the Bloomframe balcony could soon become a familiar element of the modern cityscape as more architects, developers and builders realize its considerable functional and aesthetic benefits.

According to the company's co-founder, Michiel Hofman: "The Bloomframe balcony is playing an essential role in the positive evolution of our cities, encouraging us to re- think and improve interior space options.

Bloomframe helps us live better."

The Bloomframe balcony offers inhabitants of apartments, offices and hotels the ultimate flexible living environment: an insulated picture window one minute and a fresh, open balcony the next, cleverly adding vital space to compact interiors and bringing the outdoors in.

The unique balcony is engineered by Dutch manufacturer Hurks geveltechniek.

It consists of tough all-weather materials and controlled by a smooth electronic system.
