![]() Miho Koshido Named Retail Design Creative DirectorInternational retail brand strategy and design firm, JGA, recently named Miho Koshido to creative director at JGA.She will be overseeing the project design process, working closely with her clients from initial conceptual development through final design. In announcing the appointment of Ms. Koshido to creative director, Ken Nisch, JGA chairman, said, "We believe that Miho's extensive experience, her global expertise and depth of familiarity in categories that expand upon JGA's traditional strengths will make her an important contributor in supporting our expanding roster of international clients." Ms. Koshido's extensive experience in retail design and brand strategy spans 20 years. She previously served as design director for Hambrect Oleson Design Associates in New York City. Prior to that she was studio director for Walker Group and senior store designer for Federated Department Stores. Her creative and strategic skills benefited retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue, Lladro, Tumi, Bloomingdale's and Neiman Marcus. ![]() Student Team of Architects Wins Multiple AwardsA team of four PhD students in the computation program of the Department of Architecture has recently racked up a string of impressive wins in design competitions.Referred to as SPARC, the international team consists of Sergio Araya of Chile, Orkan Telhan of Turkey, Duks Koschitz of Austria and Alexandros Tsamis of Greece. Together, on their own "free time," they work on projects ranging from object design to landscape architecture - often in collaboration with artists, designers and consultants - experimenting with different levels of "embedded behavior" by which designed material becomes an active interface between people and the built environment. more web.mit... ![]() Governor's Lifetime Achievement Award Given to John PortmanPraised as "a legend in urban design," John Portman Jr. received a lifetime achievement award from Craig Lesser, the chairman of the World Trade Center Atlanta, at the Governor's International Awards dinner held at the Cobb Galleria Centre on Sept. 17.Mr. Lesser praised Mr. Portman, 84, for "his impressive body of work, which grows still today, and a lifetime commitment to international leadership in connecting people with their physical surroundings..." He traced Mr. Portman's career from the development of the Atlanta Merchandise Mart to his current projects including the 151-story Incheon Tower being built in Incheon, South Korea. more www.glo... ![]() Heller Manus Architects Selected to Lead the Design of Guangzhou's Southern AxisHeller Manus Architects was awarded the contract to design the master plan for a crucial portion of Ouangzhou's growing metropolitan area.With a population of 10 million, Guangzhou is China's third largest city and covers more than 3,720 square kilometers or nearly 1,450 square miles. Beating out several other entries, Heller Manus' proposal was selected by a commission of nine jurors including notable planning and architectural experts in China. Additionally, members of the Guangzhou public were asked to cast votes for their favorite design plan during a two week public viewing phase. The South Axis master plan includes the design of 14.78 square kilometers, incorporating waterfront and transit oriented development with a ferry terminal, central government districts, and a variety of urban land uses. The Heller Manus concept was chosen for its balance of growth with sustainability and preservation, while promoting amenities for better livability. ![]() The Art of Architecture: Foster + Partners Opens at the Nasher Sculpture CenterContinuing its investigation of contemporary architecture, the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas presents a retrospective of the work of Foster + Partners.Scheduled to coincide with the grand opening of the new, Foster-designed Winspear Opera House in the AT&T Center for Performing Arts, the exhibition explores Foster + Partners' major architectural achievements over the past four decades. Architectural models, along with drawings, renderings, photographs and videos, give insight into the formal and conceptual underpinnings of the practice's work and provide a context for better understanding the new addition to the panoply of modernist architecture in Dallas. "The Nasher is pleased to present an exhibition which showcases Foster + Partner's greatest architectural works and explores the firm's philosophy that the quality of surroundings has a direct influence on the quality of lives and the culture and climate of place," said Jeremy Strick, Director of the Nasher Sculpture Center.
