 Chelmsford Salvation Army Citadel Corps Wins Two RIBA East AwardsHudson Architects' Salvation Army Citadel Corps Chelmsford, Essex has won two awards in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) East Region Spirit of Ingenuity Awards 2009, which recognise ingenuity, design excellence and innovativeness of architecture in the counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.The building has won the Community Architecture Award as well as receiving the top accolade the East of England Building of the Year Award 2009.  GE Energy Financial Services Building Designed by Perkins EastmanInternational design and architecture firm Perkins Eastman announced that the 280,000 sf new headquarters of GE Energy Financial Services in Stamford, CT has attained LEED Gold status for Commercial Interiors.This is only the second project in Connecticut to attain LEED Gold-CI, and one of only 111 projects in the U.S. The certification is in the spirit of GE's ecomagination program to address environmental challenges and in keeping with GE Energy Financial Services' renewable energy investing, which features a portfolio of more than $4B in renewable energy projects worldwide. Perkins Eastman's Stamford office teamed with Sustainable Design Collaborative (SDC) as LEED consultant to develop a strategy that included 100% use of green power from wind, 30% reduction in water usage, 20% use of recycled materials in the project's interior finishes, 20% use of materials manufactured within a 500-mile radius, "cradle-to-cradle" furniture, use of low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emitting materials, and incorporation of alternative transportation, including provision for bicyclists. More than 75% of waste was diverted from landfills during construction.  APLD 2010 International Landscape Design Awards: Call for EntriesThe APLD International Landscape Design Awards recognizes excellence in the field of landscape design.For 2010, the entry process will continue to be electronic and the entry categories have been expanded to allow for recognition of show gardens. APLD also recognizes that sustainability is an increasingly necessary component in all landscape design, and it will be considered in the judging of all pertinent categories. The best entries, judged by a distinguished international jury, will receive a gold award. Other deserving entries will receive a merit award.  RIBA to Freeze Membership Rates for 2010The Royal Institute of British Architects has announced that it will freeze all of its membership rates for 2010, as part of the Institute's continuing drive to support its members through the current period of economic difficulty.The rates will remain at the 2009 levels for all membership categories, (encompassing Associate Member, Affiliate, and Chartered Member both UK and International) including the concessionary rates, which are available to members experiencing financial hardship. "There is no doubt that the architects' profession has been severely affected by the economic downturn, and this is something that the Institute fully understands; the RIBA is firmly committed to supporting the profession through this difficult time, and our work to assist members has been very well received," said Ruth Reed, President of RIBA.
