Label Schindler Award 2010 Access for All

Schindler Award 2010: Access for All

The Schindler Award challenges young architects to think beyond form, light and materials and to focus on the needs of the people who will eventually inhabit the structures and spaces that they design.

Students of architecture are invited to put forward visionary design ideas for developing an area of the grounds that were used for Berlin's 1936 Olympic Games.

The central theme of the competition is "Access for All," a design philosophy characterized by inclusiveness and barrier-free mobility for people of all ages and capabilities.

The Schindler Award is an excellent opportunity for graduating architects to have their designs judged by a professional jury.

It is open to architecture students who are either in their last year on a bachelor's course or attending a master's course at a European university or school of architecture.

Deadline for registrations is April 30, 2010. Completed projects must be submitted by July 30, 2010.

Will Alsop Reassembly Required

Will Alsop: Reassembly Required

In anticipation of the launch of OCAD's annual Design Competition, the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) Faculty of Design will host a free public talk by celebrated architect and designer of OCAD's Sharp Centre for Design, Will Alsop.

As one of the UK's most prominent architects, Alsop is guided by the principle that architecture is both a vehicle and symbol of social change and renewal.

This philosophy extends from the design of individual buildings to embracing broader principles of urbanism and city development.

By abandoning the hegemony of an acceptable style, he has rendered the whole process of architecture one of increasing fluidity and transparency; as such he continues to uncover new and refreshing positions for architecture.

RIBA Welcomes Government Support for Fairer Access to the Professions

RIBA Welcomes Government Support for Fairer Access to the Professions

The Royal Institute of British Architects announced support for the Government's response to Unleashing Aspiration, the Fair Access to the Professions report which was an initiative by the Gateways to the Professions Collaborative Forum.

Alan Milburn's panel, on which Sunand Prasad Immediate Past President of the RIBA originally took part, reported the challenges that face young people wishing to pursue a professional career in a number of industries (including architecture).

It outlined a series of recommendations to encourage a wider pool of talented people to succeed in the professions, regardless of their social or economic background.

There are many areas that the professions can respond to and the new Gateways to the Professions Collaborative Forum should provide the direction and guidance for positive action.

"The RIBA is committed to ensuring the architecture profession is inclusive and representative and will be doing what it can to support this new forum.

The RIBA has put in place and will continue to develop a number of measures to help to address this objective.

Improvements in access to a career in architecture can include improving careers advice in schools, promoting mentoring schemes, offering work placement support and developing flexible study options.

The HostPractice scheme for example, is a good way to support graduates in an architect's practice where they can get further experience hopefully leading to some form of employment," said Ruth Reed, RIBA President.

Auburn Students Take First Place in Volkswagen Design Challenge

Auburn Students Take First Place in Volkswagen Design Challenge

Volkswagen Group of America, Chattanooga Operations, RiverCity Company and the Chattanooga Chapter of the American Institute of Architects announced the winners of the student design competition held to generate solutions to the challenge presented by the 700 foot pedestrian bridge for Volkswagen's new $1 billion production facility under construction in Chattanooga.

Students at six Southeastern universities submitted designs for the pedestrian bridge, which will connect Volkswagen's on-site training facility with the plant and serve as the major entry point for both employees and visitors.

The competition was intended to offer students the opportunity to address a challenging real-world situation, while generating ideas for Volkswagen's team of professionals to draw from when designing the bridge as it will be built this year.

"As an exercise to generate fresh, creative design ideas, the competition was very successful," said Dr. Jan Spies, general manager of project engineering for the Chattanooga plant.

"In fact, there were so many interesting ideas that many of my favorites didn't even make the jurors list of winners, but we still intend to use those ideas as well if they work to improve the final design."
