Green with Style: Bringing Elegance to Sustainable Design

Around the corner from the famed Alte Pinakothek in Munich's museum district, evidence of architectural progress is becoming visible.

The building, the Brandhorst Museum, scheduled to open early next year, is on course to become Europe's most energy-efficient museum.

But the initial impact of the building is its beauty -- the shimmering flesh tones of its façade, which on closer inspection turn out to be created by 35,000 ceramic bars in dozens of colors, and its harmoniously balanced shape made up of assorted squares and rectangles.

The building is a sign of a dramatic maturation in sustainable architecture.

No longer a movement merely guided by good intentions, green architecture has become integrated into the discipline of aesthetic design.

It also serves as a stimulus to creativity and technology, as architects and engineers seek original solutions to sustainable design's inherent task of reducing a building's burden on the natural world.

Space and Learning Herman Hertzberger

Space and Learning: Herman Hertzberger

Schools loom large in the comprehensive body of work designed by Herman Hertzberger; more than thirty have been built to date.

School-building, according to Hertzberger, is one of the few areas in architecture today where designers are still able to define and influence human conditions.

In his opinion, school buildings require striking a balance between use, performance and an architecture informed by education.

School buildings need re-inventing on each new occasion, particularly given current developments in education which are shifting away from the traditional approach to one more targeted at the individual.

This clearly necessitates a trade-off between education, educational systems and architecture.

Space and Learning brings together Hertzberger's knowledge and ideas in a theoretical study of the spatial conditions of learning, lavishly illustrated throughout with the architect's own work and that of others.

Double Take Architecture Talk

Double Take Architecture Talk

Series of talks looking at the crossover between architecture and film.

John Maybury (pictured) began his career as an artist, experimental filmmaker, and influential music-video director.

Yet he was to achieve cult acclaim as a director with his 1998 film about Francis Bacon, "Love is The Devil".

His next film, "The Edge of Love", is about the poet Dylan Thomas and stars Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley.

Bernard Tschumi's numerous writings continue to shape a whole generation of young architects.

He successfully drew together theories of film and architecture through projects like the Manhattan Transcripts.

He is currently completing the New Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece.

Maison Tropicale for Design Museum at Tate Modern

Maison Tropicale for Design Museum at Tate Modern

Hotelier Andre Balazs, in partnership with the Design Museum and Tate Modern, brings a house designed by architectural visionary Jean Prouve to Britain for the first time.

The prototype house, designed by the French architect Jean Prouve (1901-84), for 1950s colonial West Africa, is erected outside Tate Modern.

Maison Tropicale for Design Museum at Tate Modern is an extension of the Design Museum's exhibition Jean Prouve - The Poetics of the Technical Object and the house demonstrates the full scale and vision of Prouve's economy of design.

Visitors are be able to walk around this "flat pack" house which was originally erected in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, in 1951.

In 2000 the house was found in Brazzaville, in a dilapidated state and riddled with bullet holes.

The house was dismantled, returned to France and restored.

Jean Prouve designed and manufactured three prototype Maisons Tropicales for West Africa between 1949 and 1951.

The Brazzaville house is made from folded sheet steel and aluminium.

For ease of transport all the parts were flat, lightweight and could be neatly packed into a cargo plane.

World-renowned Architect Zaha Hadids Design Selected for MSUs Broad Art Museum

World-renowned Architect Zaha Hadid's Design Selected for MSU's Broad Art Museum

World-renowned architect Zaha Hadid of London has been selected as the winner in the design competition for the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University.

Hadid joined the Broads at two public events today where MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon announced the winner.

"With today's announcement of Zaha Hadid as the architect of record for the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University, we take one step closer to bringing this extraordinary project to life," Simon said.

"We were fortunate to have the work of many world-class architects submitted for the competition but Ms.

Hadid's design truly captured the spirit of what this iconic building will represent to MSU's campus and the greater mid-Michigan community that will benefit from its presence in the area."

The announcement is the culmination of a competition that began in June 2007 when the Broads gave a gift of $26 million to help fund the new museum, which will focus on modern and contemporary art.

The other finalists were: Coop Himmelb(l)au (Vienna and Los Angeles); Morphosis (Santa Monica, Calif.); Kohn Pedersen Fox Architects, PC (New York); and Randall Stout Architects, Inc. (Los Angeles).
