Label Archeworks Announces New Leadership

Archeworks Announces New Leadership

Archeworks co-founders and directors, designer Eva Maddox and architect Stanley Tigerman, have passed the baton to award-winning architects Sarah Dunn and Martin Felsen.

Dunn and Felsen were introduced officially as new co-directors of Archeworks at a symposium on January 16, 2008 at Archeworks.

Under the leadership of Dunn and Felsen, Archeworks will operate as a do-tank to engage in an international discussion of the future of cities.

It's a critical issue.

At the outset of the 20th Century, 10 percent of the worldwide population lived in cities.

In 2025, according to the United Nations, the number of city dwellers will likely reach 5 billion people.

Beginning with the 2008-2009 academic year Archeworks will address urban issues such as health, energy, mobility and lifestyles.

The 2008-2009 school year will focus on water.

Archeworks students will envision ways that Chicago can become a sustainable urban model for dealing with the global water scarcity dilemma.

In subsequent years Archeworks will take on developing proposals to help Chicago to meet each of the other challenges, one issue per year.

The project includes buildings for the Program in Theater and Dance, components of the Department of Music, the Lewis Center for the Arts and the Society of Fellows in the Creative and Performing Arts.

Encompassing an estimated 135,000 gross square feet, the preliminary plans include a black box theatre, a large dance studio, an orchestral rehearsal studio, several smaller acting studios, dance studios, music practice rooms, classrooms, support spaces, a café and offices.

Including the recently completed expansion and renovation of the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City, MO, and for its strength in using complicated programs as the basis for excellent architecture using light to open up spaces.

Mark Burstein, executive vice president Princeton University, stated: "We were looking for an architect who thrives on a complex program, and not only having a plan support that program but also having the buildings connect the programs together - almost integrate the programs spatially."

George Nelson Vitra Design Museum Exhibition

George Nelson: Vitra Design Museum Exhibition

In 2008, the American designer George Nelson (1908-1986) would have been 100 years old.

In recognition of this centennial anniversary, the Vitra Design Museum is planning the first comprehensive retrospective on his work.

Trained as an architect with a degree from Yale, Nelson was one of the defining figures of American design in the latter half of the 20th century.

He created classics of modern furniture and interior design like the Coconut Chair (1956), the Marshmallow Sofa (1956), the Ball Clock (1947), the Bubble Lamps (starting in 1952) and the Action Office (1964).

Nelson was not only a successful designer but also an acclaimed writer and editor, lecturer, exhibition designer and passionate photographer.

In his many essays on design, he was one of the most prominent voices among his peers in reflecting on the working conditions, duties and objectives of his profession at a time when the field and its image were still in the formative years.

Nelson's conception of design as a system, his approach that went beyond mere styling and always took into consideration the greater nexus of interrelated interests and concerns as well as his achievements in the teaching of design give his oeuvre particular relevance and appeal in today's context.

Street Design and Placemaking a Masterclass for Managers

Street Design and Placemaking: a Masterclass for Managers

This series of regional masterclasses has been developed by CABE and partners to support public sector managers responsible for delivering change in their area.

The masterclass is designed to highlight the links between design quality, funding and performance and focuses on the delivery of quality through integrated teams as outlined in the recent government guidance Manual for Streets.

The event will also explore the role of key processes and tools such as Building for Life in delivering quality under pressure.

The masterclass will be delivered by a panel of acknowledged experts in street design familiar with the challenges that local authorities face.

It aims to provide an interactive forum for the discussion of the latest principles and good practice, how to overcome barriers and how to make change happen.

EcoBuilding International Exhibition and Conference

EcoBuilding: International Exhibition and Conference

Regulations, technological innovation, environmental awareness, and market trends are pushing us toward a change of direction in the design, construction, equipping, financing and use of buildings, districts and cities.

As a result, bioclimatic architecture, sustainable construction, energy efficiency, and intelligent buildings are becoming indispensable to development.

In a combination of Exhibition and Conference, EcoBuilding will bring together the leaders of these new environment-friendly approaches to the conception, execution and use of inhabitable spaces.

EcoBuilding will be held in Zaragoza, Spain, from September 24 through 26, 2008.
