![]() Walk the Walk: A New Sustainability Campaign for Green Building DesignThe American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced the launch of "Walk the Walk," a multi-faceted campaign to educate, promote and encourage sustainable design among consumers, business owners and architects. The purpose of the program is to help inform the marketplace on the benefits of more energy-efficient homes and buildings, which coincides with the AIA's stated goal of making all buildings carbon neutral by 2030 and helping the U.S. design and construction industry reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in buildings. To advance its efforts in achieving a 50 percent fossil fuel reduction by 2010, the AIA also is implementing a comprehensive communications plan, inclusive of print and online advertising, new media and public relations. "As America continues to be saturated by messages of 'going green,' there is a general lack of understanding that buildings are one of the primary sources of the greenhouse gases contributing to global warming and climate change," said Christine McEntee, Executive Vice President and CEO of the AIA. "The 'Walk the Walk' program will raise awareness of this issue and provide practical energy saving solutions for people who build, work and live in buildings of all shapes and sizes." more Walk the Walk: A New Sustainability Campaign for Green Building Design design directory AIA > Architecture Organizations added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Moving Communities Forward: AIA Study on Design of Transportation ProjectsThere are six key design strategies that can be crucial in determining whether or not a transportation project will benefit its community, according to a new federal study conducted by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and University of Minnesota's Center for Transportation Studies (CTS).The report, Moving Communities Forward, analyzes over thirty different transportation projects from every corner of the country, exploring how they impact their communities' economic progress, environmental health, public safety, level of citizen participation and overall aesthetics and livability. The study was authorized by Congress in the 2005 transportation bill and funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. David T. Downey, Assoc. AIA, managing director of the AIA Center for Communities by Design said, "The findings show that small decisions have major effects on how a transportation project impacts its community. In particular, it was striking to see how involving the public in a design process that incorporates all applicable disciplines - architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects, contractors, and government officials - can achieve a solution that has multiple benefits for a community." Bob Johns, University of Minnesota CTS Director, added, "The benefits of involving multiple disciplines were evident in this research as well as in design practice. This truly was an interdisciplinary academic study, wi more www.mov... (90) design directory AIA > Architecture Organizations added by Levent OZLER |
![]() Europan 9 Winners AnnouncedThe winners of the Europan 9 - the world's largest housing and urban design competition for young architects - have been announced.RCKa won for their City Slipway scheme for Stoke-on-Trent. This ambitious project - which will see up to 300 new homes being built - aims to revitalise the city centre by encouraging people back from the suburbs and surrounding towns. A central public route down to the city's Caldon canal is proposed together with a striking apartment building and terraced housing that responds sympathetically to the site. In Milton Keynes, where the site will provide some 150 new homes, Bristol-based Tom Russell Architects won with A Forest in the City. This brings together family housing with mews housing and also successfully rises to the challenge of preserving a unique identity for the city as it continues to grow. The jury will award a winner for the site in Sheffield in Spring 08: there are two runners-up who will receive feedback from the judges and the client (Sheffield City Council) and then the opportunity to further develop their ideas. The high-quality of the winning schemes shows what we should expect from urban design and new housing. What the schemes also show, however, is the value of design competitions in attracting keen design teams and encouraging the very best design. The winners were announced on 16 January 2008 at New London Architecture. more www.eur... (838) added by Levent OZLER |
![]() Exploring Design: Thinking and Making in a Changing WorldOn February 17 and 18, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago will present a two-day series of events devoted to addressing the current state of architecture and design, and their position as engines of production in a world awash with "stuff" that quickly finds its way to the landfill.Moderated by SAIC professor Ben Nicholson, the February 17 roundtable includes Aaron Betsky, Director of the Cincinnati Museum of Art; Jeffrey Kipnis, Architecture Curator at the Wexner Center for the Arts; Bruce Mau, Creative Director of Bruce Mau Design; and Art Institute curator Zoe Ryan. If design has moved to the realm beyond empty, this roundtable attempts to challenge designers and thinkers to invent our way out. On February 18, Aaron Betsky will deliver the William Bronson and Grayce Slovet Mitchell Lecture. Betsky's lecture, entitled "Nothing," addresses his belief that architecture must move beyond building and "represent, make us at home in, and help us figure out a world that seems without shape or meaning." event (ended) current design events more Exploring Design: Thinking and Making in a Changing World design directory SAIC : School of the Art Institute of Chicago > Art Education added by Levent OZLER |
