![]() Puerta America HotelHow many internationally acclaimed architects does it take to change the face of boutique hotel design? Answer: 19.It sounds like the punchline to some sort of industry joke, but at the Silken Group's Puerta America Hotel in Madrid the answer is no laughing matter. Silken's Juan Valls takes up the story: "we initially wanted to call in four or five internationally renowned figures. Then one thing led to another and the field expanded." Silken enlisted the likes of Zaha Hadid, Ron Arad, David Chipperfield, Norman Foster, Jean Nouvel and Marc Newson; a dream team made up of the biggest names in design and build - Real Architecture anyone? The Puerta America's location is either handy for the airport or a suburban enclave on the edge of a busy motorway, depending on your point of view. The external structure was developed by SGA Studio, headed by Felipe Saez de Gordoa, and is fairly standard airport hotel fare: an unobtrusive rectangular tower block. more www.des... ![]() Farol Design Hotel: Cascais, PortugalThe town of Cascais huddles around a graceful bay, ringed with palacios and townhouses.Downtown welcomes with elegant shopping streets, esplanades and a vista of fishing boats and yachts afloat on the sea. The charm of the old part of town with its small houses, narrow alleys and cobbled streets is a reminder of a past age. In the centre of the old town, next to the marina, is Farol Design Hotel - a daring architectural project. A remodeled 19th century mansion, formerly owned by the Count of Cabral, has been carefully combined with a contemporary interior. The result is a harmonious bridge in time. The Estoril Coast, on which Farol is situated, enjoys a privileged climate. Its fine sandy beaches dot the shore, and lush countryside climbs uphill towards the Sintra mountains. Fine brasserie dining and a saltwater pool allow guests at the Farol Design Hotel to live the local al fresco life such a landscape offers. Relaxed, surrounded by the Atlantic breeze, one can practically touch the sea. more www.des... (378) added by Levent OZLER |
