Accor North America, one of the nation's largest hotel owner/operators and the parent company of Motel 6, today unveiled the Motel 6 "Phoenix" prototype.

In early consumer feedback guests found the new prototype to have a modern, European boutique-style flair that they find both unexpected and appealing.

Behind the Scenes at the Royal Festival Hall

Behind the Scenes at the Royal Festival Hall

Pupils from Highbury Fields School in north London have been learning about the design of public buildings during a How Places Work visit to the Royal Festival Hall (on Friday 29 February).

Diane Haigh, CABE's director of architecture and design review, and Simon Fraser, director at Allies and Morrison, took the year seven pupils on a tour around the building, encouraging them to think about the way places and spaces are designed.

Allies and Morrison were responsible for the refurbishment of the Royal Festival Hall between 2005 and 2007.

The pupils were given a thorough tour of the building - including an exclusive opportunity to go in the ceremonial box and behind the scenes.

The tour was organised by the Architecture Foundation as part of CABE's national How Places Work programme which is run in partnership with the Architecture Centre Network.

The programme aims to inspire young people to understand the importance of good design in buildings and places through first-hand experience of great contemporary architecture and public spaces.

CABE's network of "inspirers" - gifted men and women with a deep knowledge of buildings and spaces - introduce thousands of young people to the places that they have a particular passion for, revealing how they came to be designed the way they are and what makes them special.

Terry Pawson Architects Wins Consent for New Development in Kingston Upon Thames

Terry Pawson Architects Wins Consent for New Development in Kingston Upon Thames

Terry Pawson Architects has received planning permission for a development of 2 new private houses in the Coombe Hill Conservation Area of Kingston upon Thames.

The practice was granted planning permission following appeal after the scheme for Q Developments was refused planning permission last summer, despite positive feedback from the Kingston Design Review Panel.

The new development is sited on the plot of an existing private house dating from the 1950s.

Two new interlocking houses, each with its own central courtyard, have been sited around a number of mature trees already on the site, creating a carefully designed composition within the verdant character of the area.

The 6000 sqft houses are designed to symmetrically reflect one another and are slightly staggered on the gradient of the site.

Internally, rooms are positioned around a central courtyard which brings light to the lower ground floor.

The ground floor is devoted to family life and entertainment, private bedrooms are located on the first floor and guest bedrooms in the lower ground floor facing into the courtyard.

Planning permission was originally refused on the basis of the building's incongruous appearance, mass and bulk in relation to the surrounding conservation area.

Beachlife Architecture and Interior Design on the Seaside

Beachlife: Architecture and Interior Design on the Seaside

Putting an ordinary towel down on the sand may well suffice in order to enjoy a sunny day at the beach.

But more and more often designers, architects and artists are crafting imaginative solutions that capture or enhance the unique atmosphere that is created where water meets land.

Beachlife presents a selection of the best concepts in architecture, interiors and product design that are inspired both directly and indirectly by the beach.

The book features structures such as beach clubs, beach bars, hotels, restaurants, vacation homes and pavilions that can be found on ocean coasts and riverbanks.

But, more than that, Beachlife also includes furniture and products made for the seaside as well as original projects by creatives from around the world, who have discovered the beach as a location for experimental art, temporary installations and events.

The numerous examples in Beachlife deliver new and unusual insights into how the beach can be presented and utilised creatively - not only as a place for relaxation and inspiration, but also as an attitude and way of life.
