Label Survey Finds Architects Designing Green to Address Demand for Lower Building Operating Costs

Survey Finds Architects Designing Green to Address Demand for Lower Building Operating Costs

Autodesk and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced the results of the 2007 Autodesk / AIA Green Index, an annual survey that measures how AIA member architects in the United States are practicing sustainable design, as well as their opinions about the green building movement.

The index shows that green building has taken a firm hold on the industry and has captured the attention of both architects and their clients.

The 2007 Autodesk / AIA Green Index survey reports 70% of architects say client demand is the leading driver of green building and that the primary reason these owners and developers are demanding greener buildings is for reduced operating costs.

Architects are responding by significantly increasing their use of sustainable elements such as high-efficiency HVAC systems, recycled building materials and using software to model energy usage.

According to the Autodesk/AIA Green Index, less than half of architects were incorporating sustainable design practices into their projects five years ago.

However, this number is quickly rising with 90 percent of architects expecting to incorporate some sustainable elements by 2012.

This rapidly growing adoption of sustainable design is in direct response to a strong client demand for green building, with 70 percent of this year's respondents citing client demand as the main driver pushing architects to go green.

New Gotham Becomes the New Home of Season 4 Project Runway Contestants

New Gotham Becomes the New Home of Season 4 Project Runway Contestants

The aspiring designers of Bravo's hit reality show Project Runway have moved: After three seasons of living at Atlas New York during the competition, this season, debuting tonight, their new home is New Gotham, a 375-unit, 34-story, luxury residential tower located at 520 West 43rd Street.

Both properties are part of Gotham's City, Gotham Organization's conglomerate of high-end residential buildings in New York City.

Project Runway's fifteen contestants lived in the stylish building over two months of competition to become the next great fashion designer.

The contestants were provided with six apartments, had access to the building's 24-hour personalized concierge service as well as its full gym with basketball court.

Mixing comfort and tranquility with high-end style, New Gotham was the ideal new home for the contestants.

The residence reflects the show - young, vibrant and cutting edge.

Along with the new digs, the overall apartment design has evolved: "The approach to the design of the apartments this year was first and foremost minimalistic," says production designer Katie Abiad, who has been decorating the contestants' apartments since Season One.

"We kept the design simple and clean, avoided using shelves and hanging wall art to minimize clutter, but we had fun with the walls," she says, noting that the colorful walls depict bold stripes and stencil designs.

SHH Create Sleek and Sexy New Champagne Bar for Dion in Canary Wharf

SHH Create Sleek and Sexy New Champagne Bar for Dion in Canary Wharf

Architects and designers SHH have created a sleek and sexy new bar and restaurant for premier champagne and wine bar brand dion, set within a historic building on West India Quay in London's Canary Wharf.

The Canary Wharf bar, the third to open under the dion brand, is the first to feature the new interiors concept, which marks a departure from the design concepts of the initial two outlets (in St Paul's and Leadenhall Street, in the heart of the City).

"The new bar will become the flagship venue for the brand", commented dion's owner Jo Chalker.

"It is the largest of the three bars to date and situated at the hub of what is now London's most intensive financial district, with huge business potential for high per capita spend.

We needed a dramatic design scheme to do justice to the new location and we chose SHH because we had confidence in their ability to inject high-octane glamour into the project - but also because they are very professional and capable and great to deal with as people!"

The new bar, with capacity for up to 360 people, occupies the ground and lower ground of the space, as well as an external entrance area (The Veuve Clicquot Terrace), bordered by bamboo planting and lined with tented pavilions.

As well as being responsible for the interior architecture and design of the space, SHH have also applied the brand to new menus, matchboxes and signage.

Chichen Itza 2008

Chichen Itza 2008

To mark the election of the Maya city of Chichen Itzá as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World Arquitectum, a company which organizes architecture competitions, announced the 5th Landscape Architecture Competition Chichen Itza 2008", to be held from October 2007 to February 2008.

Chichen Itza 2008 idea contest is looking for the best proposals that envision the installation of a next generation observatory that renews the vision of tourism, and invites the visitor to enjoy a different and new kind of experience such as is spending the night and waking in front of the citadel of Chichen Itza itself.

The Maya name "Chich'en Itza" means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza ".

Although this was the usual name for the site in pre-Columbian times, it is also referred to in the ancient chronicles as Uucyabnal, meaning "Seven Great Rulers".

The site contains many fine stone buildings in various states of preservation; the buildings were formerly used as temples, palaces, stages, markets, baths, and ballcourts.

Architects from anywhere in the world may take part in the competition as long as they have completed their studies (including bachelors) as well as any "Architecture Workshop" of any Faculty, School or University which runs the "architecture career" which includes at least one professor with these attributes.

Multidisciplinary teams may also take part in the competitions (engineers, artist, etc.) as long as they have an Architect as Team Leader.
