RIBA Presidents Awards for Research 2008 Call for Entries

RIBA Presidents Awards for Research 2008: Call for Entries

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is calling for entries for this year's RIBA President's Awards for Research.

The deadline for submissions is 16 June 2008.

Winners will be awarded at a ceremony celebrating Research and Education Awards in spring 2009 at the RIBA, W1.

This is the third year of the awards, which are presented annually to reward and encourage outstanding research in architecture.

Entries will be judged on their contribution to architecture, originality, significance and rigour, and the winning entries must be regarded as an exceptional contribution to architectural knowledge.

The judges may also award commendations to one or more other shortlisted submissions in each category.

The judging panel, composed of practitioners and academics, is appointed by the RIBA Research and Development Committee and approved by the President of the RIBA.

Sunand Prasad, President of the RIBA, said: "Knowledge is any profession's most precious asset.

Research is what underpins knowledge, keeps it sharp and helps our anticipation of the future.

Through these awards the RIBA recognises both excellence in research and the capacity of research to unite the study and practice of architecture; to strengthen links between students and the profession."

A-cero Works 1996-2006

A-cero Works 1996-2006

Joaquin Torres, head architect of A-cero, an architecture, interior and urban design practice based in Spain, presents a book showcasing the best works made by the firm in its first ten years.

The material featured in this publication includes early projects such as the geometrically pure houses that gave the firm its name in Spain, a cubic marble mausoleum or a concrete building for the university of A Coruna, the first competition won by the then young firm created by a group of students, eager to carry out their vision of architecture.

An idea where the bounds between architecture and sculpture are blurred, creating buildings at once functional and expressive.

These ideals and engagement of the early days is still present in a firm that has gone through a great growth, working on projects all around the globe, in places like Santo Domingo or Dubai, where they have recently opened an office.

The hardcover book presents architecture, interior, industrial and furniture design projects made between 1996 and 2006 in nine chapters, widely illustrated with plans and photographs.

The book is already in display in selected bookstores in Spain is available through the firm's website and and will be soon on the principal online book shops.

Lobby Design

Lobby Design

56 new projects present the new trends in Lobby Design all over the world.

The lobby is a passing place, a transitory space.

It is the first point of contact with the place visited from the street.

The great challenge for the architect and client is to achieve a space in which the visitor would like to stay.

The book is divided into chapters and gives an overview of all kinds of lobbies, such as in public buildings, airports and hotels but as well in private apartment houses.

The projects will be presented in alphabetical order of the designers.

As far as available plans will be shown.

An index of contact information of the designers and architects is enclosed.
