![]() G-20 to Meet at David L. Lawrence Convention Center in PittsburghThe David L. Lawrence Convention Center (DLLCC) in Pittsburgh, PA, the first and largest Gold LEED-Certified convention center, will be the location for the G-20 Conference being held September 24 and 25, 2009.Designed by Rafael Vinoly Architects, the building is an amalgam of great aesthetics, functionality and sustainable design. Ahead of its time, the building, completed in 2003, seamlessly integrates efficient structure, sustainable technologies and "green" materials into an efficient and dynamic building, setting the new benchmark for convention centers and large exhibition spaces around the world. The suspension roof of this 1.45 million-square-foot convention center integrates into a single sweeping gesture the contextual, environmental, structural, and programmatic requirements of the project. Its design takes inspiration from the historic suspension bridges that span the Allegheny River adjacent to the riverfront site and provides the latest chapter in Pittsburgh's long history of engineering and technological innovations. This unique steel cable structure made possible a naturally-lit and column-free, 250,000-square-foot exhibition hall. With energy conservation at the forefront, the Convention Center was built on the brownfield site of the building it replaced. This reduced the need for a new infrastructure system and made use of the existing public transit accessibility by light-rail, water and bus. more G-20 to Meet at David L. ![]() DAY Amsterdam Designs Europe's First Nike Sportswear Store, ParisDAY Creative Business Partners in Amsterdam has designed the first Nike Sportswear pilot store in Europe. The store, opening in Paris this month, is the first of a series throughout Europe launched by Nike Sportswear, a new division of Nike. The new Nike Sportswear collection is based on timeless sports apparel and shoes, with a brand identity which includes images of classic gyms, well-used equipment, and urban environments. DAY's brief was to push the existing US conceptual retail style further, using the location - an old bookstore in the heart of Paris' Le Marais district - to influence the concept. "The heritage of the building itself directly influenced the concept development," said Gesina Roters, Creative Partner. "The store had been left closed but intact for more than 40 years, so we were able to use traces of wear and tear - such as the floor, which had been repaired but not restored - to our advantage. The result is a store which balances heritage with a modern contemporary twist in sports performance." more DAY Amsterdam Designs Europe's First Nike Sportswear Store, Paris design directory DAY > Multidisciplinary Design Companies added by Levent OZLER |
![]() Winning Project for the Kunsthaus Zurich Extension OptimizedDavid Chipperfield's winning design for the Kunsthaus extension has been optimized in line with the jury's recommendations for its function within the fabric of the city as a whole, and with regard to its internal organization. The project has now been revised with respect to its volume and the extension's inclusion in its surroundings, and has seen the accessibility of its central hall improved, along with the conception, topography and design of the art garden. At the same time, the revision process has also clearly vindicated the jury's choice, with the winning proposal's basic architectural concept remaining intact. more Winning Project for the Kunsthaus Zurich Extension Optimized design directory Kunsthaus Zurich > Art Museums added by Levent OZLER |
