 AIA to Host Series of Transportation and Community ForumsAs a member of Transportation of America, a broad coalition calling for the renewal of our national transportation program for the 21st century, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) will be hosting a series of public forums across the country.Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) has been working with groups like AIA and other stakeholders to encourage public forums that address the growing infrastructure crisis and highlight the many interconnecting infrastructure issues and transportation needs, including the priorities of architects to design sustainable, livable communities. "We need to make real investments in our nation's transportation infrastructure, and to achieve this we must bring a variety of groups and stakeholders to the table. It is vital that we engage the public in the discussion over how we design, build, maintain and fund America's roads, rails and public transit systems," said Rep. Blumenauer.  AIA Columbus Announces Design Winner for New Center for ArchitectureA design created by Lincoln Street Studio has been selected as the winning submission for the new Center for Architecture, which will be opened next year by AIA Columbus.The center, to be centrally located Downtown at 390 E. Broad St., will serve as an unparalleled resource to create a more livable community by connecting the architecture and design professions with the community.  Swedish Sustainability Experts Wins Competition to Redevelop Southend PierTeamed up with Price & Myers, White arkitekter from Sweden won the prestigious competition to redevelop Southend Pier situated on the English Channel and the mouth of the Thames."We are extremely proud of having been chosen to work with this iconic treasure," commented Anders Svensson, CEO, White arkitekter. "The proposal shows our ability to combine high-end design with social and economic sustainability." The competition attracted 74 entries and 5 was shortlisted. Southend Pier was in 2007 voted Pier of the Year and is the longest pier in the world. An iconic pier with its own distinctive character, history and people. One of the main attractions of the Pier is the view of the sea, and in particular, the feeling of being on the sea. "A key element of our proposal is to make sure that the people of Southend use the Pier and take it into their heart.
