Sustainable Urbanization in the Information Age

Sustainable Urbanization in the Information Age

The Sustainable Urbanization in conference addresses the global challenges posed by rapid urbanization and its impact on global warming and the natural environment - from poverty and inequality to natural and manmade disasters - by calling for better sustainable planning for urban growth.

Global warming and climate change pose serious threats to all nations in the 21st century.

The Sustainable Urbanization conference seeks to create opportunities to share best practices between nations, as well as the political means to bring about change.

It is imperative that the problem of worldwide urbanization be faced in an informed and inspired way, in order to create the preconditions for a sustainable environment and healthy and fulfilling life for millions of people around the world.

The Conference will be held in New York City during Earth Week on 23 April 2008, at the United Nations Headquarters.

The conference will be linked to other events planned in New York on the celebration of Earth Day (22 April) and Earth Week - the anniversary of Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC 2030, as well as the 2008 Regional Assembly of the Regional Planning Association on "Oil and Water, Adopting to Society" to be held on 18 April 2008, and the Go Green Expo on 27 April 2008.

The World Urban Forum organized by UN-HABITAT, which will take place in China in October 2008, will concentrate on the sustainability of cities.

OFCDesk, LLC invites interior design professionals and students from around the world to participate in the first ever OFCDesk design competition; Real-time Office Spaces: Designing the NeoCon experience.

All participants are called to create a unique office layout using OFCDesk's Interior Design CAD (IDC) along with Steelcase products to showcase the features, flexibility and ease of use of IDC within a limited floor space, using set guidelines and restrictions.

OFCDesk IDC is commercial interior design CAD software that features industry-specific design tools for office layout, auditorium, movable storage, and general space planning.

Contest participants should design an exhibit resembling an office layout that is interactive as well as realistic to fit a 20'x11' booth space which engages passers-by, invites them into the space, and solves the primary function of the space.

The preselection phase for architects competing for the Kunsthaus extension project in Zurich is now closed, and twenty applicants have been selected from a pool of more than 200.

Seasoned offices and teams of promising young architects alike are now set to enter what is expected to be the final phase (briefing in April, selection of winning project in December 2008).

With 214 applications by architects from 22 different countries, the Kunsthaus extension project in Zurich has awakened international interest.

In early March, a jury of 20 led by Walter B. Kielholz, President of the Zurcher Kunstgesellschaft, selected twenty offices to take part in what is expected to be the final phase of the competition.

In addition to representatives of the Kunsthaus extension's partners, the jury also includes artists, collectors, and architects from various European countries; its decisions are consequently informed by international experience with major cultural undertakings, artistic talent, and curatorial expertise.
