Facebook Headquarters by Studio O+A

Employees of Facebook recently moved to a new headquarters that facilitates interaction and connection, reflecting the company's mission as a social networking website provider.

Formerly a laboratory facility for high-tech manufacturer Agilent Technologies, the 150,000-square-foot structure at Palo Alto's Stanford Research Park brings together more than 700 employees originally scattered throughout 10 locations in and around downtown Palo Alto.

The design of the space relied heavily on input from the users, appropriate for a flatly structured company that weights every employee's opinion equally.

O+A designers interviewed employees about what they wanted from their new headquarters.

The Facebook platform was used to conduct company-wide polls about design decisions, post construction photos and updates, and keep everyone informed of the thought process behind the project.

An advisory board of employees from every department collaborated with the design team on the design process, from space planning to finishes to final move coordination.

Because the new facility houses employees coming from various locations, the company wanted to maintain each division's distinct identity.

The design takes its inspiration from the patchwork nature of Facebook users and employees, bringing together seemingly disparate elements to form a cohesive pattern and using color and interior spacing to create neighborhoods within the open plan space.

World Green Building Council Leaders Summit

World Green Building Council Leader's Summit

IIDEX/NeoCon Canada 2009 and the Green Building Festival will host the World Green Building Council Leader's Summit on September 23, 2009.

The Leaders Summit will be the first time the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) brings together world industry leaders and policy makers to hear from experts about the enormous potential green buildings offer nations as they work to reduce their carbon emissions.

This Summit is part of a larger initiative that includes a number of events happening concurrently around the World, as many of the national Green Building Councils (GBCs) also work to raise awareness about the important role green buildings have in reducing carbon emissions.

World leaders are preparing to gather in December for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to determine the next global deal on how to reduce carbon emissions.

WorldGBC wants to ensure that green buildings are a part of the Copenhagen discussions.

Hosting the Summit in Toronto, in conjunction with IIDEX/NeoCon Conference and the Green Building Festival, the WorldGBC Secretariat wants to shine the spotlight on Canadian initiatives and showcase the opportunities for governments to be the leading advocate for green buildings on the international stage.

Axel Ritter Smart Materials Will Revolutionise Architecture Within Years

Axel Ritter : Smart Materials Will Revolutionise Architecture Within Years

Architects who fail to run with the trend sparked by radical smart materials towards adaptive and kinetic buildings will be left behind, says a leading expert.

The use of materials that change their properties in reaction to heat, moisture or light will "revolutionise" architecture, German architect Axel Ritter said.

Buildings of the future will be able to change colour, size, shape and opacity in reaction to stimuli.

Architects will be able to design buildings that change their geometry according to the weight of the people inside, he said.

SuBET Hilson Moran Launches Unique Sustainable Masterplanning Tool

SuBET: Hilson Moran Launches Unique Sustainable Masterplanning Tool

A unique sustainable masterplanning tool is being launched by leading engineering consultancy Hilson Moran, in conjunction with Dr Husam Al Waer and Professor Derek Clements-Croome from Dundee and Reading Universities.

After eight years of development, the SuBET masterplanning tool offers a comprehensive, international, sustainable rating scheme and assessment tool that evaluates the sustainable design and performance of a major masterplan.

It provides a valuable framework for masterplanning right from the start, incorporating not just the environmental aspects of sustainability, but also the social and economic impacts created by the design of a built environment project.

"This powerful tool offers a real breakthrough in sustainable masterplanning," said Matt Kitson, Hilson Moran's Director of Sustainability.

"It enables us to analyse over 70 different indicators of sustainability at the very inception of a project and to assess a proposed masterplan using bespoke weightings for environmental stewardship, economic growth and socio-cultural impact, according to the particular development's and country's priorities."
