![]() 5+design Teams up With Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines to Design Celebrity Equinox5+design was a key player on the design team behind the recently launched Celebrity Equinox, the second vessel in the Celebrity Class, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines' largest and most innovative ships. When the Celebrity Solstice first launched in November of 2008, the new class quickly became the new benchmark for the industry. With the design of the Equinox's retail armature, the main spine of the ship, which includes the Fortunes Casino, the Galleria Tastings wine and aperitif venue, the Art Gallery featuring an extensive on-board collection, and a two-level retail arcade, the 5+design team drew on their experience designing Solstice, observations on how people use the spaces, and guest feedback. Yet, as designer Sharon Huang notes, "People are always excited to see new things on the next ship, our Equinox design reflects that understanding." For Celebrity the Solstice Class of ships represents the most sophisticated and elegant manifestation of their brand, offering an exceptional range of services and amenities that bring the highest level of luxury, style, comfort and choice to its 2,850 guests. That intense focus on the on-board guest experience is what shaped the design for 5+design as they collaborated with Celebrity's in-house team and five other internationally recognized design firms. design directory 5+design > Multidisciplinary Design Companies added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Call for Green Architects to Design for HealthA relatively inexpensive but effective assault on the twin epidemics of type 2 diabetes and heart disease could come from the emerging sustainable building industry, the Public Health Association conference was told today.Susan Bidwell, a regional public health analyst with the Canterbury District Health Board told the conference in Dunedin that while "green" buildings promote and protect environmental health they may be missing some simple opportunities to actively promote the health of the occupants. "There is of course plenty of overlap. A building sited to maximise sunlight or designed to eliminate the emission of toxic compounds from furnishings will be beneficial to workers in that building. But there are areas that do not overlap," Ms Bidwell told the delegates. In a first-of-its-kind study in New Zealand, Susan Bidwell and her research partner, Dr Anna Stevenson, pulled together international findings on how to make a building healthy and the benefits of that. more www.sco... ![]() Dublin Bridge Wins European AwardThe new Spencer Dock bridge in the Dublin docklands won the Best Structural Design prize at a Leaf (Leading European Architects Forum) awards ceremony in Berlin last night. The awards, now in their sixth year, are given to those who "have made an outstanding contribution to the world of architectural design" and for buildings that set benchmarks. "It is great to get a structural award because the structure was where the innovation lay in this bridge," said Amanda Levete of Amanda Levete Architects who worked on the sculptural bridge with Arup engineers. Also on the structural award shortlist was a glass staircase in the National Bank of Denmark by Dissing + Weitling Architecture, and a timber tower in east London by Waugh Thistleon Architects. "The shortlisted structures all really pushed out the boat technically and it was a real honour to win," said Ms Levete. more www.iri... ![]() Worthing Swimming Pool: Winner AnnouncedLondon based practice Wilkinson Eyre Architects has won the competition to design a new swimming pool for Worthing Borough Council.Wilkinson Eyre were selected in preference to Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, also based in London. Both teams had been identified as preferred teams at the end of the first stage of the competition and were invited to a follow-up interview with the client. 109 expressions of interest were initially submitted for the competition and six teams shortlisted to prepare design work. The four other teams competing for this commission were: Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, London; Thomas Heatherwick, London with Saville Jones, Worthing; Pringle Richards Sharratt, London; and Ian Simpson Architects, London. It is anticipated that the new pool complex will include an 8 lane 25 metre pool, a combined learner/diving pool, indoor leisure pools, with rapids and flumes, and outdoor waters, a health and fitness centre, cafe, crèche and flexible space for other activities although the precise details of the final specification will be developed as part of the design and costing process. The site, located adjacent to the existing swimming pool on the seafront and close to the town centre is a wonderful development opportunity and the Council is keen to ensure that a first class leisure facility can be provided together with the subsequent mixed use development of the site vacated by the existing swimming pool following completion of the new facility. more Worthing Swimming Pool: Winner Announced design directory Wilkinson Eyre Architects > Architecture Companies added by Levent OZLER |
![]() Norman Foster: Drawings 1958-2008An exhibition comprising two hundred drawings executed between 1958 to 2008 by Norman Foster is currently showing at Ivorypress Art + Books in Madrid. The exhibition is complemented by a series of colloquia on Art, Economics and Sustainability respectively. Speakers include Stefan Behling, Ricky Burdett, Richard Cork, Norman Foster, Herbert Giradet, Jordi Gual, Richard Long, Saskia Sassen, Deyan Sudjic and Not Vital. The exhibition has been curated by Luis Fernández-Galiano, who is also acting as Colloquium Moderator. "In a gallery he himself has remodelled, two hundred drawings chart half a century devoted to architecture," said Galiano. "From his formative years to the leadership of a firm that builds around the world, the dialogue between the eye and the hand through a pencil has been for Norman Foster a tool of analysis and pedagogy, useful for the conception of the works and the explanation of his intentions. Since many of the initial sketches are contained in the notebooks that the architect always carries, the exhibition includes fifty of them; and since all this graphic production is nothing but a device for the construction of buildings, displayed here are also half a dozen models that remind of the three-dimensional nature of architecture, no matter how often it begins in the humble two-dimensional support that paper provides." event (ended) current design events more info www.ivo...
