Label Gateway Goes for Guild Social Housing International Open Ideas Competition

Gateway Goes for Guild Social Housing: International Open Ideas Competition

Community Gateway Association is celebrating Preston Guild 2012 with a competition to design an exciting social housing scheme in the city centre.

Preston Guild is a famous and unique celebration with more than 800 years of tradition.

The Guild dates back to the granting of Preston's first Charter by King Henry in 1179.

Linking the city's glorious heritage and past with its ambitions for the future, the Guild is Preston's most important and historic event and is held every 20 years.

The next Guild is in 2012 with the theme of "Innovation and Creativity".

Community Gateway Association, as the largest housing association in Preston, and working in partnership with Preston City Council, is keen to be involved and is sponsoring this architectural competition with the aim, subject to funding availability, to have a winning scheme built and occupied by the time of the main Guild events in mid-2012.

Architects are invited to develop innovative design proposals for a social housing development in the centre of Preston, where people will aspire to live.

The winning scheme, with an emphasis on design quality and energy efficiency, will be a project demonstrating that affordable does not equate to ordinary, and should act as an exemplar for future social housing developments in Preston and elsewhere.

The Selection will take the form of a two stage process, which at stage one will involve teams submitted design ideas on a single A1 design board.

Homes for Old Age Need a Radical Rethink

Homes for Old Age Need a Radical Rethink

People over 80 form the fasting growing age group, yet little of the existing housing stock is fit for their needs.

CABE wants to see radical changes to the way in which housing which is designed for care delivery is commissioned.

Housing in the future needs to allow older people to have more independence, a better choice and the ability to maintain friendships and community networks.

People who receive care now expect to have more control over services.

CABE's new report, Homes for our old age, launched with the Housing Learning and Improvement Network (Housing LIN) features ten case studies of housing schemes which show how the range and design of housing can support this new freedom.

The design of homes has a huge impact on quality of life, and CABE's chief executive Richard Simmons said that local authorities, health trust and regnewsistered social landlords (RSLs) responsible for commissioning housing schemes for older people need to rise to the challenge.

"Otherwise they will be condemning more and more of us to an isolated and lonely old age."

RIBA July Results of the Future Trends Survey

RIBA: July Results of the Future Trends Survey

The Royal Institute of British Architects announced the July 2009 results of its monthly Future Trends Survey, marking the start of the third quarter monitoring business and employment trends affecting the architecture profession.

The trends emanating from last month's survey continue to highlight a steady return to some optimism; only 18 per cent of practices were expecting a decrease in workload, compared to 21 per cent in June.

Practices predicting an increase in workload also rose from 31 per cent in June to 31 per cent in July, a further indication that practices continue to grow more confident about their work outlook.

The number of staff that are currently underemployed also continued to decrease from 23 per cent in June to 22 per cent in July.

The most significant change in workload predictions has occurred within the public sector, which rose from just 16 per cent in June to 29 per cent in July.

There was also an improvement in the commercial sectors, with expectations for growth steadily increasing from 13 per cent in June to 16 per cent in July.

However, there was minimal change within the private housing sector, with workload predictions remaining constant at 24 per cent in June and July.

Changes in predictions for staff retention were positive overall, with 11 per cent of practices expecting staff levels to increase over the next three months, compared to 8 per cent in June.

Perkins Eastman to Design the Next Generation Trading Floor for NYSE Euronext

Perkins Eastman to Design the Next Generation Trading Floor for NYSE Euronext

The New York office of international design and architecture firm Perkins Eastman has been commissioned by NYSE Euronext to design the "next generation trading floor" through extensive renovations to the floor's Main Room, replacing traditional broker booths with modern trading desks, new screens and workspaces, and a new network while creating a unified trading environment.

The refurbishment plan will continue over the next 18 months, demolishing many of the old booths and replacing them with large open trading areas that will be able to accommodate as many as 40 traders each.

The finished space will likely resemble NYSE Euronext's new NYSE Amex options trading floor-also designed by Perkins Eastman.

"This exciting new project represents the continuation of a long-term relationship with the NYSE, says principal in charge Carl W. Ordemann AIA.

He furthers, "Projects like this are paramount to our commitment to designing work spaces that reflect and reinforce our clients' identity, vision, and core values while promoting a positive, highly productive work environment."

As described by Lou Pastina, NYSE Euronext's executive vice president in charge of NYSE operations, "In the last two years the New York Stock Exchange has increased its competitiveness, first by upgrading its technology, then by enhancing its market model.

The next phase is to physically remake the trading floor."
