The Mississauga Urban Design Awards

The Mississauga Urban Design Awards

Today at the 23rd annual Mississauga Urban Design Awards, the City recognized six outstanding projects for achieving Mississauga's highest standards in building design excellence.

"In Mississauga we believe that design excellence contributes to the quality of life in our community and helps to establish our identity as a great city," said Acting Mayor George Carlson, Councillor for Ward 6. "This year's award winners represent not only great, distinctive buildings, they are true landmarks that will be admired and emulated for many years to come."

"The jury was impressed by the number and quality of the many outstanding submissions to this year's competition," said Councillor Eve Adams, Ward 5 and jury member. "The winners selected this year not only demonstrate outstanding building design, but also show the power buildings have to transform an area, add to a neighbourhood's character and become identifiable as part of the community."

Planning and Building Commissioner Ed Sajecki, who also was a jury member in the selection process, added, "With this event, we acknowledge the tremendous effort the design and building industry makes to meeting the City's standards for urban design excellence and their role in making Mississauga a vibrant city."

Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City Unveils Headquarters Design

Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City Unveils Headquarters Design

The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City released the design of its new headquarters today, a 14-story limestone-clad tower with a two-level conference and visitor center bordering Penn Valley Park.

“We don't want a tribute to ourselves,” said Thomas M. Hoenig, president and CEO of the Kansas City Fed. “We want an office building that's useable, but is still substantial and they delivered it to us.”

The principal architect of the 600,000-square-foo t building is Henry N. Cobb of New York-based Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. Ellerbe Becket Architects is assisting on the project. It will occupy a 15.7-acre site on the south edge of Penn Valley Park and is approximately the same height at Liberty Memorial, which lies across the park on the north edge.

A groundbreaking for the $200 million project is scheduled for late spring 2005 and completion is anticipated in spring 2008. The Federal Reserve Bank plans to sell its current quarters at 925 Grand Blvd. within the next three months and lease the space back until the new building is completed. The asking price is $10.8 million.

“We've had considerable interest,” Hoenig said. “I don't think we'll have trouble selling. It's a very attractive building.”

The new Federal Reserve complex will have a five-level, 925-space employee garage to the south. The office tower will ris

James Polshek Design Reflects Substance

James Polshek: Design Reflects Substance

Architect James Polshek compares his design for Bill Clinton's presidential library to his plans for a new arts center in Omaha, Neb., not for their style, but for their substance.

He said both of the public projects reflect values and a desire to give back to their communities.

That ideal helped Polshek and Partners go against the grain in choosing a site and developing a multi-faceted, modernist Clinton Library, which officially opens Thursday.

The Clinton Presidential Center has transformed downtown Little Rock, first by setting an architectural precedent, and then by spurring nearly $1 billion in development.

Similarly, Polshek's National Inventors Hall of Fame is the nucleus of a rebirth in Akron, Ohio. The Omaha Performing Arts Center is under construction with the same thing in mind.

The Clinton Library includes a 20,000 square-foot museum in a glass and steel structure suspended over the edge of the Arkansas River, a nod to Clinton's well-known speech about building a bridge to the 21st Century. The same building includes another 60,000 square feet of meeting rooms, service areas, offices, a cafe and a rooftop apartment for Clinton.

A hallway connects to a 70,000-square-foot archives building, which holds 630 tons of material, including 80 million pages of public and secret documents. It represents the

American Renaissance To Celebrate Spirit of Design

American Renaissance To Celebrate Spirit of Design

On December 17, 2004 Sotheby's will present a thematic auction celebrating the spirit of American design at the dawn of the 20th century, entitled American Renaissance. The heart of the sale is a landmark collection of important and rare works by California architects Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene, the largest offering of its type to appear at auction. The work of other American pioneers such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan and George Washington Maher, among others, will also be offered. Complementing these architects will be a select group of lamps, favrile glass, ceramics and jewelry by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Prior to the December 17th auction, the entire offering of approximately 150 lots will be on exhibition in Sotheby's 10th floor galleries from December 12th to 16th.

James Zemaitis, Senior Vice President and Director of Sotheby's 20th Century Design Department, said, "This is the first time that such a comprehensive offering of Greene & Greene furnishings has appeared on the market. It is a unique opportunity for collectors as the present offering has been assembled over many decades with a curatorial eye. It gives us a rare opportunity to juxtapose the California Arts & Crafts aesthetic with the Prairie School, the Beaux Arts Revival and the American Art Nouveau."
