![]() NASA Sustainability BaseEarlier this week, NASA held a ceremonial groundbreaking and dedication event for what is expected to become the highest-performing building in the federal government. The new, environmentally friendly building at NASA's Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif. is being named "Sustainability Base" in honor of the first humans to walk on the surface of another world from their Tranquility Base Apollo 11 lunar landing site 40 years ago. It will serve as a highly efficient collaborative support facility providing workspace for a wide range of NASA's aeronautics and space exploration missions. The new building is designed to achieve a platinum rating under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) new construction standards for environmentally sustainable construction developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. The building will feature near zero net energy consumption, use 90 percent less potable water than conventionally built buildings of equivalent size and reduce building maintenance costs. The building will showcase some of NASA's most advanced intelligent control technologies originally developed to support the nation's human and robotic space exploration missions. more NASA Sustainability Base added by Levent OZLER |

![]() New Orleans Arcology Habitat: NOAHTangram 3DS, a firm specializing in visualization and computer animation, announced it's collaboration with E. Kevin Schopfer AIA, RIBA.Together, the companies have designed and presented a bold new urban platform. New Orleans Arcology Habitat (NOAH) is a proposed urban Arcology (architecture and ecology), whose philosophic underpinnings rest in combining large scale sustainability with concentrated urban structures, and in this case a floating city. Why a floating city? There are three major challenges to building in New Orleans. The first challenge is to overcome both the physical and psychological damages of recurring severe weather patterns. Though repopulation has begun, the need to provide a stabilized and safe environment is paramount to a long-term recovery and economic well being of New Orleans. The second challenge is that New Orleans has been built at and below sea levels, which creates a consistently high water table and makes it prone to flooding and storm surges. The third challenge is that New Orleans is built on soil condition that consists of thousands of feet of soft soil, silt and clay. These conditions make building large-scale concentrated structures difficult. "Believing that NOAH is a viable plan, our solution to overcome these challenges is to take advantage of these seemingly conflicting issues with the introduction of a floating urban platform. This solution is deceptively simple, using water as a controlled, naturally occurring, bearing foundation, is perfectly feasible and practical," states Schopfer. more www.tan... ![]() Modernism at Risk: Modern Solutions for Saving Modern Landmarks"Modernism at Risk: Modern Solutions for Saving Modern Landmarks," an exhibition organized by the World Monuments Fund and sponsored by Knoll Inc., will travel to design schools and other venues across the United States beginning with the University of Florida's College of Design, Construction and Planning. The exhibit will be on view from Sept. 8-24 at the gallery in the Architecture Building. The exhibition will also travel to New York City, where it will be on view at the American Institute of Architects New York Center for Architecture from Jan. 21 through April 10, 2010. "Modern Solutions for Saving Modern Landmarks," a project of the WMF Modernism at Risk program, consists of large-scale photographs by noted photographer Andrew Moore and interpretative panels with five case studies that explore the role designers play in preserving Modern landmarks. event (ended) current design events more info www.wmf... ![]() Building Performance Initiative: USGBC Tackles Building Performance Head OnThe U.S. Green Building Council stepped up its commitment to improved building performance with the launch of the Building Performance Initiative, designed to put in place a comprehensive data collection effort from all buildings that have achieved LEED certification; implement an appropriate analysis methodology of that data; and provide feedback to building owners so they have better information with which to address any performance gaps that stem from predicted building performance versus actual performance. This initiative complements the announcement earlier this year that will require ongoing performance data from buildings as part of their certification under the latest version of LEED and beyond. "This initiative is about gathering knowledge about building performance in a way no one has ever done before," said USGBC LEED Senior Vice President, Scot Horst. "The information that we collect from our certified projects is a workable, holistic approach for achieving better performing buildings." Horst noted that the LEED green building program was created to transform the way buildings traditionally have been designed and constructed with the goal of reducing the building's impact on the environment by being more energy, water and resource efficient, but a building's day-to-day operation has a dramatic impact on its performance. more www.usg... ![]() Workshop: Informing the Design of the Future Urban LandscapeInforming the Design of the Future Urban Landscape workshop will identify emerging design themes by bringing together practitioners from across disciplines.Participants in the workshop will collaborate in a practical exercise designed to reveal issues that will increasingly impact upon the design of the products and services that will populate the urban landscape in the near future. The outcome of this half-day workshop will be the identification of challenges that designers and technologists will have to address as they shape the media-rich urban landscape. more Workshop: Informing the Design of the Future Urban Landscape added by ingi Helgason |
