My Architect A Sons Journey

My Architect: A Sons Journey

In this portrait of the artist as an absent father, the illegitimate son of architectural genius, Louis Kahn, sets out to document the life of a parent he never really knew. Illuminating and deeply touching, this is one family gathering that makes the Osbournes look well balanced.

American architect, Louis Kahn didn’t let his marriage and daughter get in the way of producing two illegitimate children with two different mothers. A workaholic with a debt ridden practice, he rarely had time for any of them. Despite his extended family, in a twist that has you mouthing ‘he had it coming’, he died alone of a heart attack in a train station toilet. Only a child when his heavily absent father departed, Nathaniel Kahn embarks on a cross continent search from Pennsylvania to Bangladesh in a desperate attempt to get under the skin of the father he only knew from fleeting visits. Lost relations, colleagues, lovers and siblings are called upon to shed light on the man, along with the magnificent buildings he created.

Now in his thirties, Nathaniel is clearly deeply scarred by life without his father. Having raised him to an almost divine status through memory, his documentary serves to present dad as monster as well as a God. But as his son goes back to the beginning, you discover the method in the man’s madness. Growing up with

KC Issues RFQ for Architect Engineer for Sprint Center

KC Issues RFQ for Architect, Engineer for Sprint Center

Kansas City has issued a request for qualifications for an architect and engineering firm to design the Sprint Center.

The city seeks a team experienced in designing arenas, stadiums, public assembly buildings and similar facilities.

"This team will serve as the architect for this complex and aggressive project to develop a design that compliments, supports and creates synergy with other development projects in the vicinity, most notably the KC Live Downtown Entertainment District," Cauthen said in a written release late Friday.

The deadline for submitting statements of qualifications is 5 p.m. Sept. 3.

The arena must be designed to National Hockey League and National Basketball Association specifications and be competitive with similar facilities recently built throughout the country, Cauthen said.

Designing for Devotion Columbus Attracts Clerics Architects

Designing for Devotion: Columbus Attracts Clerics, Architects

Why is it that the arches and open spaces of a cathedral inspire faith, yet so does the comfort and familiarity of a small country chapel?

The connection between design and devotion is under study by a group of clerics, neuroscientists and architects who are trying to understand how the mind reacts to the sensations of entering a house of worship. The result, they hope, will be better designs that enhance the meeting of the sacred and earthly.

"This whole quest is more than learning that things do happen -- but why do they happen?" said Norman Koonce, chief executive of the American Institute of Architects and father of the partnership.

Koonce became interested in neuroscience over a decade ago after he met Jonas Salk, who developed the polio vaccine. The doctor told Koonce that while stymied on a breakthrough, he made a retreat to Assisi, Italy. The great buildings of the monastery town inspired Salk to think more deeply and design the research that produced the breakthrough.

Learning about such experiences was the focus recently as about 30 representatives from religion, science and architecture gathered for two days in this small city, an architectural mecca set amid the cornfields of southern Indiana. The meeting was the latest in a series of "exploratory workshops" into architecture and neuroscience organized b

“We are very excited to be included in Building Design & Construction&#8217 ;s GIANT 300,” said Bob Gramann, FAIA - firm president. “We take a lot of pride in our work, and it’s nice when a publication such as BD&C recognizes our efforts.”

Architects Warn Buildings Need to be Stronger to Cope with Climate Change

Architects Warn Buildings Need to be Stronger to Cope with Climate Change

"Climate change will have a big impact on the way buildings are designed in the future. It is more of an issue in Scotland, because predictions suggest the country is going to get both wetter and warmer.

"This means we can expect more flooding, higher winds and more storms.

"For architects the challenge will be to make sure buildings are robust enough to cope with that kind of climate change.

"In Scotland we will need to look at building robust facades that can cope with wetter winters. More rain at that time of year could create problems with mould."

Kay Jenkinson, of UKCIP, said: "We have been working with the architect profession to make them aware of the impact of climate change."

The government-backed study, written by architect Bill Gething, will be published next month.

It is expected to outline a number of practical measures architects can take into account when designing buildings to deal with climate change.

He recommends new buildings should be more robust to deal with extreme weather events, such as hurricanes.

And he said more nails will be needed in roof tiles as well as stronger bracing to deal with extreme weather events.
