Slow It Spread It Sink It

Slow It, Spread It, Sink It

In alliance with the Environmental Affairs Department (EAD) Storm Water pollution prevention initiative, a local research center, Materials & Applications(M&A), has joined forces with the Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce (SLCC) Green Committee to present a set of guidelines and workshops for small businesses.

The workshops are being held at a Silver Lake business, All Shades of Green, where the changes taught in the class will be installed as part of the class over the first three Saturdays of May.

These workshops and the basic concepts they teach will encourage designers, architects, and property owners to think creatively about solving challenges in the urban environment in highly efficient ways.

The stated goal of the workshops is to diminish the amount of water that flows off urban properties and into the storm drains - where it then flows down the Los Angeles River and into the ocean.

In times of peak flow, the river carries 183,000 cubic feet of polluted water per second out to the Pacific Ocean - 14 times the flow of NY's Hudson River.1 It can reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour, leaving no chance for pollutants to settle out in the river before hitting the bay.

Ben Van Berkels First Major American Building Begins Construction in New York City

Ben Van Berkel's First Major American Building Begins Construction in New York City

Construction begins in New York City on Ben van Berkel's latest, most ambitious and beautiful re-interpretation of standard domestic architecture: Five Franklin Place, UNStudio's first major American project, will be a 20-story residential tower on Franklin Place, an original 19th century cobbled passageway that runs parallel to Broadway and connects Franklin and White Streets in the Tribeca historic district of Downtown Manhattan.

The building will be wrapped in an optically dazzling, constantly shifting pattern of horizontal black metal bands sewn onto its form the way decorative seams and pleats are sewn onto a luxurious couture garment.

A direct homage to the applied metal facade decoration of Tribeca's celebrated 19th century cast iron architecture, these gleaming reflective ribbons will grow thinner and thicker, wrapping the entire tower and moving softly around corners to give the whole structure an etched effect and curvilinear softness, while reflecting the evolving light of day, the clouds and the colors of the city in one of the most dramatic compositions attempted in modern Manhattan's recent building boom.

Van Berkel's highly decorative architectural garment is no mere graphic conceit: Thanks to strategic twisting and torquing, his facade bands will serve as essential functional elements of the tower as well, transforming into balconies for more than half of the building's residences, terraces for the penthouses at the top, and sunshades that deflect heat and protect all of the structure's interiors from excess sunlight.

Creating the Sustainable Office Conception to Completion

Creating the Sustainable Office: Conception to Completion

Lara Conaway, Sustainability Manager at office transformation specialists Morgan Lovell, will be speaking at the first Sustainable FM Academy, taking place at this year's Facilities Show.

The Academy combines a series of presentations and debates designed to instigate thought and action on both waste management and energy in buildings.

At the event, Lara will cover the challenges, together with the easy wins, when creating a sustainable office refurbishment, and explore how to carry out a green office fit out within a typically designed 1960s multi-tenanted building.

She will also focus on a case study involving Morgan Lovell's own sustainable office design and fit out at its London headquarters, which has achieved the highest BREEAM rating for an office refurbishment project to date in the UK.

Entitled "Creating the Sustainable Office - Conception to Completion," Lara's seminar takes place on Thursday, May 15 at 12.30pm.

The Facilities Show runs at the NEC in Birmingham from 13 to15 May.

Code Would Force More Green Building Designs in Houston

Code Would Force More Green Building Designs in Houston

Houston builders will have to incorporate "green" design techniques such as heat-trapping vestibules and "cool roofs" that deflect sunlight under a proposed new energy code for commercial buildings.

The City Council could pass the new code for commercial buildings today.

A new residential code also is being developed and could come before the council next month.

Houston adopted its first energy codes in 2002 in response to a state mandate.

This would be the first update, and it is decidedly more "green" than its predecessor.
