Design Steps Up in the Fight Against Obesity

Design Steps Up in the Fight Against Obesity

Two in three men and three in four women in England don't get enough exercise, but the good news is that the answer lies on our doorstep.

CABE has long argued that the design of your neighbourhood really does influence whether you're fit in the long term or whether you're going to gradually just put on weight.

That's because it's regular exercise which takes and keeps the pounds off - but you are only likely to take that exercise if local streets and open spaces are inviting.

The case for investing in decent design for streets and open spaces is getting stronger by the day.

This week saw the publication of both new government strategy and independent public health guidance into how active lifestyles can be designed into streets, towns, and cities.

Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives from the Department of Health outlines the government's plans to encourage healthier lifestyles.

There are some great proposals for 'healthy towns' which prioritise walking and cycling, outdoor green spaces and community-based initiatives to promote a good diet.

There is also a welcome focus on children and young people, especially the investment in "healthy schools".

CABE is working to ensure that safe and active travel to school is considered in the design and refurbishment of schools through the Building Schools for the Future programme.

It should also provide spaces for active play, and use school grounds to promote learning about healthy food.

Agence BOS by Rene Desjardins

Agence BOS by Rene Desjardins

For the second time, René Desjardins has created the interior design for the new offices of Montreal ad agency BOS.

On November 1, 2007, the project tied for the Créativité Montréal Grand Prize in the category of offices over 10,000 sq. ft.

When BOS moved into its St. Lawrence Blvd. office in 1995, the agency's partners asked René Desjardins to do the interior design.

The project stretched out over 8 years, as the office was renovated a number of times.

The final design was a model of consistency and organization, winning an Institute of Design Montréal Award in 2003, some 10 years after the starting phase!

By 2005, having outgrown its St. Lawrence office, BOS purchased an old warehouse on the Lachine Canal.

Once again, management called on René Desjardins* for help with the conversion and renovation project.

The design mandate was to fit out 45,000 sq. ft. of work and meeting areas, bathrooms and the building's annex.

The designer immediately understood that the industrial building was a powerful space.

Composed of strong, imposing elements like exposed brick walls and structural steel, the site's architecture required a forceful approach.

Desjardins decided to design new fixtures and fittings, more in line with the spirit and scale of the site.

He opted for waxed black steel, an industrial material that is nonetheless smooth and warm to the touch.

Green with Style Bringing Elegance to Sustainable Design

Green with Style: Bringing Elegance to Sustainable Design

Around the corner from the famed Alte Pinakothek in Munich's museum district, evidence of architectural progress is becoming visible.

The building, the Brandhorst Museum, scheduled to open early next year, is on course to become Europe's most energy-efficient museum.

But the initial impact of the building is its beauty -- the shimmering flesh tones of its façade, which on closer inspection turn out to be created by 35,000 ceramic bars in dozens of colors, and its harmoniously balanced shape made up of assorted squares and rectangles.

The building is a sign of a dramatic maturation in sustainable architecture.

No longer a movement merely guided by good intentions, green architecture has become integrated into the discipline of aesthetic design.

It also serves as a stimulus to creativity and technology, as architects and engineers seek original solutions to sustainable design's inherent task of reducing a building's burden on the natural world.

Space and Learning Herman Hertzberger

Space and Learning: Herman Hertzberger

Schools loom large in the comprehensive body of work designed by Herman Hertzberger; more than thirty have been built to date.

School-building, according to Hertzberger, is one of the few areas in architecture today where designers are still able to define and influence human conditions.

In his opinion, school buildings require striking a balance between use, performance and an architecture informed by education.

School buildings need re-inventing on each new occasion, particularly given current developments in education which are shifting away from the traditional approach to one more targeted at the individual.

This clearly necessitates a trade-off between education, educational systems and architecture.

Space and Learning brings together Hertzberger's knowledge and ideas in a theoretical study of the spatial conditions of learning, lavishly illustrated throughout with the architect's own work and that of others.
