![]() South Face by Massimo Iosa GhiniSouth Face is the outcome of the constant quest for sustainable design that engages with actual production systems found on the market. The installation exemplifies an architectural portion with a façade solution based on solar exposure. It consists of an insulated modular wall composed of hollow panels in eco-cement with quarry substrates, accommodating dense and dramatic-looking foliage. The façade is oriented to the south, forming a vertical garden that absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and insulates the environment it encloses from humidity. The interior of the structure is fitted with informal seating designed to beckon passers-by to stop and rest in a natural setting. "The concept of sustainability is usually associated with sterile forms in which aesthetics are often overlooked," said Iosa Ghini. "Our installation creates spectacular aesthetic effects, making sustainability both beautiful and feasible." more iosaghi... (193) design database Massimo Iosa Ghini added by Cristofaro Garofalo |

![]() Nunc Architects Wins International Envisioning the Future of JakartaDutch Nunc Architects have won the first prize in the Envisioning the future of Jakarta-competition with their design "Jakarta Bersih."The competition is part of this years International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR 2009). Their project, according to the international jury - among others the Dutch IABR-curator Kees Christiaanse (KCAP) and Winy Maas (MVRDV) - showed the most promising to improve the living standards of the Kampung population. Nunc's plan was chosen out of 87 international participants. "Our plan shows that by relocating a part of the overpopulated Kampung into our buildings, more open green spaces are created in the kampungs," said Johan Krol of Nunc. "By doing so we improve the living standards and reduce the risk of flooding. The autonomous vertical communities are linked to a waste treatment center. These centers handle all types of waste that the poorest residents of Jakarta can collect and trade of. In this way we provide work and income as part of the informal economy." "The facades of these buildings are designed as huge billboards," added Floor Moormann. "The revenue from this 70 meters high advertising will be used to facilitate and finance the cleaning communities; commerce as charity." more www.nun... (140) added by Levent OZLER |

![]() RIBA Launches New HostPractice Scheme to Help StudentsThe Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) today launches a new scheme aimed at helping architecture students and graduates who are unable to find suitable work placements in the current economic climate.Called HostPractice, the scheme enables RIBA student members and graduates access to a national online network of practices and universities interested in hosting students in their office. These students will have the opportunity to utilise the practice's facilities to work on entries for competitions, private commissions and research, as well as being offered an overview of practice activities. The scheme also intends to introduce graduates to universities that have identified suitable research projects related to the practice of architecture, with the potential for offering fellowships to suitable candidates. This research may be eligible for recording on the PEDR as post part 1 practical experience. "The current recession is deeply troubling to students and graduates of architecture; however, HostPractice offers a means for committed graduates to remain in close touch with practices and universities, exchanging experience and developing collective strategies to combat economic downturn," said RIBA Director of Education David Gloster. "The RIBA cannot offer leverage on the global economy, but this programme allows a new network of professional opportunities to develop, and offer graduates optimism for a sustainable future." design directory RIBA > Architecture Organizations added by Levent OZLER |
