Next Wave: Shelter & Kiosk - New Open Design Competition

This new competition seeks designs for a new series of seafront structures for the seaside resort of Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex.

The competition is being organised by the RIBA Competitions Office on behalf of Rother District Council.

The new structures, with a total construction value of £220,000, comprising 4 seafront shelters and a kiosk, are a flagship element of the Council's Next Wave Seafront Improvement Project, a wider £5 million cultural regeneration programme that has received £1 million of funding from CABE under the SeaChange Programme.

The project consists of a series of public realm improvements and construction projects centred on a core area of Bexhill's seafront, in the vicinity of the modernist icon that is the De La Warr Pavilion.

It is the expectation that a high quality design solution for the new structures will help deliver the regenerative and place-making objectives of the Next Wave Project, creating architecture which will add to the experience of visiting Bexhill's seafront.

Architects with exceptional designs skills are therefore encouraged to take part in the competition and respond to this exciting architectural challenge.

The Jury Panel, which will include architect Niall McLaughlin will be looking for designs which combine innovation and creativity with realism and functionality.

The successful design should lift the spirits, and help define Bexhill's unique identity, and of which the town can be truly proud.

Make It Right Architects Introduce Pioneering Duplex Designs

Make It Right Architects Introduce Pioneering Duplex Designs

The green, affordable multi-family home designs of fourteen acclaimed local, national and international architects were released today by Make It Right, the foundation founded by actor Brad Pitt to help rebuild the Lower 9th Ward after Hurricane Katrina.

The choice of duplexes as the focus of this design round represents Make It Right's first step beyond building single family houses toward constructing different types of homes.

"Before the storm, there were a number of duplexes and doubles in the neighborhood.

Families who want to come back to the Lower 9th have been asking us to build them so extended families can live together.

And duplexes are right in keeping with Make It Right's mission: They allow more people to live together with less impact on the environment and are more cost-effective to build.

"To help us, we turned to some of the best architects in the business.

They volunteered their time, met with the community and potential homeowners and applied their experience and creativity to come up with high quality designs that really advance the concept of the duplex," according to Make It Right Executive Director, Tom Darden.

"All of these architects faced a daunting set of challenges.

They were asked to base their work on a very traditional New Orleans home - the duplex.

We also asked them to make the home green, affordable, and durable enough to weather the storms to come."

Herning Museum of Contemporary Art Designed by Steven Holl Architects

Herning Museum of Contemporary Art Designed by Steven Holl Architects

Herning Museum of Contemporary Art will open to the public on September 9, 2009 uniting three distinct cultural institutions: the Herning Center of the Arts, the MidWest Ensemble and the Socle du Monde.

The new center is intended to be an innovative forum combining visual art and music, providing a driving cultural force for the region of central Jutland, Denmark.

A fusion of landscape and architecture, the landscape of grass mounds and reflecting pools aligns with a geometry of curved roof sections in a new building that houses permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, a 150-seat auditorium, music rehearsal rooms, a restaurant, a media library, and administrative offices all on one level.

Herning's longstanding relationship with textiles and the textile industry, as well as the museum's large collection of original works by Piero Manzoni (in total 46 works) forms the inspiration for the building's design concept.

The museum is sited near Herning's original Angli shirt factory and the shirt collar-shaped plan of its 1960s building has inspired the shape of the new museum building.

Viewed from above, HEART's roof geometry resembles a collection of shirt sleeves laid over the gallery spaces.

LandWorks Professional Center A New and Better Idea for Real Estate

LandWorks Professional Center: A New and Better Idea for Real Estate

Most people know that poor air circulation and insufficient light- levels in the office can lead to chronic fatigue.

But the trademark headache was only one concern.

For partners Dr. Ken Hansraj, spinal surgeon, and Marcia D. Griffin-Hansraj, D.O., a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, based in Dutchess County, it was imperative that their clinic fully represents their beliefs in human wellness and healing.

To accommodate growth, they were looking to lease new space and started a search for the ideal.

With the knowledge that better air and a bounty of natural light not only provides speedier recovery for patients but also maintains health and lift the spirits, thus the productivity, of their staff, significantly fresher air and increased daylight was crucial.

After 1.5 years of intensive research into ideal work conditions, Dr. Hansraj discovered that what he wanted was not available in New York's Hudson Valley.

XERO Project Wins ReVision Design Competition for Zero-Energy Development in Downtown Dallas

XERO Project Wins Re:Vision Design Competition for Zero-Energy Development in Downtown Dallas

XERO Project, a proposal for a new urban agriculture district and zero-energy, mixed-use development in downtown Dallas, earned one of three first-place prizes in the Re:Vision Dallas design competition.

Designed by San Francisco-based David Baker + Partners Architects and Fletcher Studio, the proposal will be considered for implementation by the competition's development partners as early as fall 2009.

The juried international competition-led by the City of Dallas and Urban Re:Vision in partnership with Central Dallas Community Development Corporation and building community Workshop-sought to spur bold visions for sustainable urban development by asking, "What if one block in Texas became the sustainable model for the world?"

Urban Re:Vision received more than 125 proposals.

XERO Project reaches beyond the one-block competition site located near Dallas's city hall to propose a new district that enacts a symbiosis of agriculture and daily life.

Two intersecting greenways, pieced together from open space and disused sites, connect existing public amenities and provide a framework for future development and cultivation.

At the greenways' intersection, the zero-energy development and a new public square with orchards and garden plots serve as the district's heart.

The mixed-use development is designed to meet density and sustainability requirements while catalyzing the broader district vision.
