Renewable Energy Systems

Renewable Energy Systems

The renewable energy systems subject is very wide and technically complex.

Some concepts such as refrigerant thermodynamics, adiabatic heat transfer and solar photovoltaic technology could justify a seminar of their own.

The Renewable Energy Systems seminar will aim to, confirm the importance of incorporating renewables into modern building designs, provide an overview and explanation of the characteristics of each renewable energy technology now available, consider their suitability, consider their capabilities, consider their limitations, and aim to "re-align" a few myths that some may hold.

Designing Designers 2008

Designing Designers 2008

Year after year, the Designing Designers Conference strives to tackle different issues bearing on international design debate.

This year's theme "Offices and workspaces for knowledge workers" will bring together academics, researchers, thinkers, designers and companies with the aim to incite discussion on the future of office space, and to explore the innovative ways in which "knowledge workers" have integrated lifestyle with workspace interaction.

On a broader level, this theme serves to highlight the changes that are taking place in the milieu of global design.

The 9th Designing Designers conference in 2008 represents a unique opportunity to delve into scenarios affecting the future of our offices in trying to understand and predict future trends.

Design professors are also invited to showcase the results of their educational endeavours, including case studies in applied design solutions that may also include collaborative efforts with professionals, producers or research centers.

10th Arquine International Architecture Competition

10th Arquine International Architecture Competition

Thirty years on from the publication of Delirious New York, Rem Koolhaas's manifesto celebrating congestion culture, at the peak of the high building craze in most of the world, and moving on from post 9-11 panic, Arquine announces its 10th International Competition, proposing the design of two skyscrapers, with 100 floors each, to celebrate the bicentenary of Mexico's independence in 2010.

The project consists in setting each tower in two strategic areas of Mexico City: the Azcapotzalco Technology Park and the Xochimilco Ecology Park, establishing a dialectic between content and void; between built object and urban landscape.

The competition invites you to embark on the projects with two relevant discourses in mind: ecology and technology, true paradigms of early 21st-century culture.

The towers should favour mixed uses (permanent or temporary housing, offices, workshops, businesses, etc.) and blur the limits between the public and private domains.

In the technology tower the use of new technologies and building materials should be favoured, focused on reducing energy consumption and producing energy from renewable sources.

In the ecological tower the use of sustainable design and biocompatible materials should be favoured.

Registration period ends February 4th, 2008.

5 International Bauhaus Award 2008

5. International Bauhaus Award 2008

With the 5th Bauhaus Award, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation continues its research into "Updating Modernism".

In doing so, a central topic of the historical Bauhaus is taken up and put into the context of a contemporary discourse: solutions are sought for the subsistencelevel housing of today.

The same title was chosen for the second conference held by CIAM (or International Congress of Modern Architecture) in Frankfurt am Main in 1929.

Here, new models and prototypes for small apartments were presented and discussed by, among others, the Bauhaus directors Walter Gropius and Hannes Meyer.

Almost eight decades later, this historical Bauhaus theme is more pertinent than ever.

Societies worldwide are confronted, in the social, ecological and cultural respect, with the problem of housing shortage.

The 5th International Bauhaus Award will look at modern standards in the field of housing and examine these in the light of the current parameters of housing shortage.

Creative designs or concepts and models or scenarios for housing policy are sought for the social strata, which live on the subsistence minimum and are therefore unable to establish themselves on the housing market.

The urban ways of life associated with poverty lead to existential housing shortages, which, given the ecological conditions of climate change, will only become more extreme.
