RIBA Trust Presents Exhibition on Valerio Olgiati

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) announced an exhibition celebrating Swiss architect Valerio Olgiati, examining seven of his projects from the last few years including his extraordinary competition winning design for the Perm Museum XXI in Russia; the National Park Visitor's Centre at Zernez, Switzerland with its unique spatial mirroring and the striking black exterior and interiors of his own office at Flims - the latter resulting from his belief that dark interiors make for a better appreciation of the exterior world from within, creating more extrovert, public spaces.

The exhibition explores Olgiati's rigorous conceptual design framework through a series of spectacular plaster models at a scale of 1:33, accompanied by photographs and renderings.

These highlight thematic issues in his work such as choice and use of materials, the importance of high-quality craftsmanship, his attitude to structure and the formal clarity of design.

Also included are key images, described as his personal musee imaginaire, providing insights into the influences and decisive stages of his design process.

Harry Rich New RIBA Chief Executive

Harry Rich: New RIBA Chief Executive

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has appointed Harry Rich as its new Chief Executive.

He will take up his new post in October 2009.

Harry joins the RIBA from Enterprise Insight which increases levels of entrepreneurship in the UK, where he has been Chief Executive since 2007.

Enterprise Insight was set up by the four major business membership bodies and is backed by government.

Under Harry's leadership, Enterprise Insight has undergone significant transformation: he restructured the organisation and successfully delivered an ambitious programme of work while improving relationships with partners and stakeholders.

Prior to this, Harry was Deputy Chief Executive at the Design Council (1999-2007) playing a central role in programme delivery, strategic planning and leadership, organisational change and corporate governance.

Harry sits on the Press Complaints Commission's Charter Compliance Panel, is a governor of the University for the Creative Arts and an Advisory Council member for the Design Management Institute (USA).

"Architecture and architects are central to shaping the world we live in. Whilst our economy and society are under pressure and changing fast the RIBA has an urgent and crucial role to play in explaining the benefits of intelligent investment in the built environment and in supporting its members through challenging times," commented Harry Rich.

"I can't wait to work with the membership of the RIBA all over the UK and beyond, and with its elected leadership and the RIBA team to communicate the value of architecture and meet the needs of members."

Aesthetics of Crossing Land Ports of Entry Citizenship by Design

Aesthetics of Crossing: Land Ports of Entry / Citizenship by Design

Van Alen Institute announced the upcoming exhibition Aesthetics of Crossing, on view at the Institute from Wednesday, July 1 - Friday, July 24, 2009.

Pairing projects by Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects and Kadambari Baxi and Irene Cheng, the exhibition examines border crossing points and the people who pass through them-provoking viewers to reconsider the physical and aesthetic dimensions of the ways that nation-states regulate and shape individuals' movements, statuses, and identities.

"Land Ports of Entry" highlights the materiality of surveillance and openness in the firm's designs for two recently built U.S. border stations that facilitate the inspection and control of passenger and commercial vehicles traversing the border between the United States and Canada.

As both ceremonial gateways and sites of surveillance and regulation, the ports paradoxically must convey a sense of both openness and security.

The architects use aesthetics - particularly material effects of transparency, translucency, and opacity-to navigate the ambiguities of the program and to gesture toward each building's complex geopolitical landscape.

"Citizenship by Design" is a public art project that interrogates citizenship in a globalized age.

By inspecting the aesthetics of artifacts such as international passports, identification technologies, and regulations on naturalization and travel, and by remixing the graphic elements of these artifacts into multinational hybrids, the project calls attention to the ways citizenship is "designed" - and how it might be reimagined-in an era of proliferating global crossings.

Bennetts Associates Potterrow Building an Innovative Educational and Office Building

Bennetts Associates' Potterrow Building: an Innovative Educational and Office Building

Bennetts Associates' award-winning Potterrow development has created an innovative learning environment for Edinburgh University, transforming the site previously used as a car park into a state of the art School of Informatics and School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences Sciences as well as the University Visitor Centre and an exhibition space.

Creating a communal, vibrant working environment that stimulated academic research was integral to Bennetts' design process.

The 16,000m2 scheme, set within the university's major new masterplan for the George Square, responds to the latest developments in educational research, creating areas that aid formal and informal interaction, which has been found to significantly improve the quality of research.

The floorplates have been laid out to ensure that usurers circulate around the building, engaging with a range of spaces and people.

The completed building has a considerable variety of areas, ranging from the largest, the Forum, capable of taking 500 persons at a graduation party right down to informal coffee points or even photocopier areas where two or three people can chat.
