Dwell on Design 2009

The Dwell on Design Conference is literally "Dwell magazine come to life" - where the Dwell Editors interpret the pages of the magazine live on stage with interviews, discussion panels and mixed media presentations.

The conference includes the same diversity of subject matter explored in Dwell magazine; rather than focus on a single conference "theme" we explore Real, Live, Modern Design in all its forms.

Dwell on Design 2009 is our fourth year of bringing leading thinkers together to discuss design innovation and our speaker lineup will prove to be as exciting as ever.

RIBA Announced May Results of the Future Trends Survey

RIBA Announced May Results of the Future Trends Survey

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) announced the May 2009 results of its monthly Future Trends Survey, which present the most positive improvements in terns of forecasted workload and staff retention since the survey started.

The trends emanating from last month's survey continue to highlight further optimism in current conditions; only 26 per cent of practices were expecting a decrease in workload compared to 34 per cent in March.

Practices predicting an increase in workload also jumped from 18 per cent in April to 27 per cent in May, a further indication that practices continue to grow more confident about their work outlook.

The number of practices that are less likely to be underemployed remained constant, with a one per cent increase from 72 per cent in April.

There have been minimal changes for workload predictions across the private housing and commercial sectors, with 11 and 10 per cent (respectively) expecting an increase in April, compared to just 12 and 13 per cent in April (respectively).

However, more practices expect their workload from the public sector to decline, with 23 per cent in April compared to 17 per cent in May.

One of the most significant changes in the survey related to redundancies and staff retention; 76 per cent of all practices expected staff levels to remain constant over the next three months, compared to 57 per cent in April, reflecting changes in the number of architects employed in practices.

World Architecture Festival Awards

World Architecture Festival Awards

Time is running out to submit entries to the world's largest architectural awards programme - the World Architecture Festival Awards (WAFA).

The closing date is 26th June; hundreds of entries are pouring in from around the world in the annual contest to find the world's best building.

From a bamboo structure in Iran to an international embassy in Thailand, a reading nest in Denmark and a private house in Japan, the entries submitted paint a global picture of the breadth and depth of architecture today.

Projects completed between 1 January 2008 and 26 June 2009 are eligible, while future project designs must have been started after 1 January 2008.

From aquariums to swimming pools, cinemas to casinos, private houses to shopping centres, concrete to timber, master planning to experimental projects, no matter what your project there's a category to suit every building type, meaning projects are judged against similar buildings and stand an excellent change of being shortlisted.

The Awards will be taking place in Barcelona for the second year running, during World Architecture Festival, at the Centre Convencions International Barcelona (CCIB) from 4th to 6th November 2009.

Online entry to the WAF Awards is open until 26 June 2009.

RIBA and UWE Launch Research Into Disability and Inclusion in the Profession

RIBA and UWE Launch Research Into Disability and Inclusion in the Profession

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE) today launch a significant research project looking into disability and inclusion in the profession, which is aimed at raising the profile of disabled architects and architectural students.

The research is being undertaken by Sandra Manley and Ann de Graft-Johnson of the School of the Built and Natural Environment at UWE, who previously collaborated with the RIBA on the research project Why women leave architecture (2003).

As one of the key projects led by the RIBA's equality and diversity forum Architects for Change, the research will seek to identify examples of good practice in the profession facilitating equal opportunities for disabled people as entrants and practitioners.

"This is an opportunity for all constituencies in the profession of architecture to hold up a mirror to their everyday attitudes, and re-evaluate the manner in which disability is treated in both architecture education and practice," commented David Gloster, Director of Education at the RIBA.

"We are confident that the results of the research will provoke both debate and change."

eVolos 2010 Skyscraper Competition

eVolo's 2010 Skyscraper Competition

eVolvo invites students and professional architects, engineers, and designers to take part in the 2010 Skyscraper Competition.

The main idea of this contest is to examine the relationship between the skyscraper and the natural world, the skyscraper and the community and the skyscraper and urban living.

In the last few years we have seen hundreds of new skyscrapers been developed around the world without careful consideration to the context or environment.

There is a constant lack of urban planning and poor architectural design without intellectual or perceptual enjoyment.

The aim of the competition is to push our imagination to redefine the term skyscraper through the use of new materials, technology, aesthetics, programs, and spatial organizations.

Globalization, environmental warming, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution are just some of the multi-layered elements that should be taken in consideration.

There are no restrictions in regards to site, program or size.

The objective is to provide maximum freedom to propose the most innovative projects for this fascinating architectural genre.

Ultimately, the designs should help the environment, restructure our cities and improve our way of life. Immediate.
