RIBA Named as Business Superbrand

RIBA Named as Business Superbrand

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) was this week announced as one of the UK's leading business brands in the Business Superbrands 2008 list.

The announcement follows a robust selection process tapping into the views of an independent and voluntary council of experts and over 1500 business professionals, the latter surveyed by research agency YouGov.

Featuring at No 244, ahead of Alliance Boots, ING and IBM, this is the first time the RIBA has been included in the Business Superbrands.

The only professional institute to feature in the Top 500, the RIBA was selected from strict judging criteria which looked at quality, reliability and distinction of a number of brands.

The RIBA's brand manager, Jonathan Smith said of the announcement: "This is a fantastic result for the RIBA and demonstrates how far the Institute's profile has risen since the 2002 re-brand and re-organisation.

When you compare the RIBA against some of the blue-chip giants that we feature alongside and contrast the size of their marketing budgets to ours, we've achieved a great deal.

Our focus for the coming year is to continue building on our reputation by championing the role of architecture in delivering good design for the benefit of society."

Urban Sustainable Design Studio Design and Sustainable Innovation

Urban Sustainable Design Studio: Design and Sustainable Innovation

What is required to foster a shift toward greater environmental, social and economic sustainability?

What barriers to change exist and how can they be overcome?

The Urban Sustainable Design Studio (USDS) explores these and other challenging questions in a dynamic interdisciplinary setting.

Stressing experiential learning and collaboration, the program centers around three projects focused on the process of creating and implementing innovative solutions to a diversity of sustainability- related issues.

The eight-week, full-time program also features weekly readings and discussions, field trips, and guest speakers from a range of relevant sectors.

Optional informal career counseling and networking opportunities assist participants with discerning potential future direction.

Working in close collaboration with one another and the program facilitators, USDS participants gain a broad exposure to the quickly evolving sustainability movement.

They graduate from the program better informed and empowered to apply systems-based thinking and transformative design to their future professional pursuits.

The program is open to attendees college-age or older possessing the requisite interest, passion, and maturity.

Architecture of Change Sustainability and Humanity in the Built Environment

Architecture of Change: Sustainability and Humanity in the Built Environment

Today's architects and engineers are increasingly being asked to address issues of sustainability in our changing world.

Architecture of Change presents outstanding architectural projects that combine creativity, scientific knowledge, technical innovation, social engagement and a strong sense of responsibility to address environmental challenges.

The book is based on the Zumtobel Group Award for Sustainability and Humanity in the Built Environment.

Architecture of Change features recently built and realised projects that in addition to their exceptional architectural quality make a notable contribution to a liveable and sustainable future.

But the book also covers current initiatives that promote innovative research in this sector and thus encourage an emerging generation of environmentally aware architects and urban planners.

Architecture of Change contains over forty international projects by architects that include Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne, Steven Holl, Kenneth Yang, Sauerbruch & Hutton, Architecture for Humanity and Rural Studio.

The included work ranges from development projects in Bangladesh, Nepal and Africa to open source Internet platforms, experimental approaches to flood prevention and modern high-rises for an urban context.

The book also includes essays by and interviews with internationally renowned experts in architecture, science, economics and politics.

Jaime Hayon Works

Jaime Hayon Works

The Spanish designer and artist Jaime Hayon is a rising star in the international creative scene.

It's safe to say that he will be one of the most influential designers in the years to come.

Hayon embodies a new type of creative Renaissance man, who - thanks to his interdisciplinary approach and extraordinary talent - can realize his unique stylistic language across various areas and media.

Whether he is creating interior design, furniture, illustration, tableware or decorative vases and ceramics, Hayon's signature style always shines through.

Seemingly without effort, his designs coherently bring together diametrical opposites such as opulence and practicality, sensuality and precision as well as finesse and restraint.

This first monograph about Jaime Hayon presents the full spectrum of his work.

The book features projects such as his extensive ceramic installation for Bisazza in Milan and the interior design for La Terraza del Casino, an exclusive restaurant in central Madrid, as well as designer toys and furniture, including his award-winning bathroom collection, AQHayon.

Ranging from clear and harmonious to playfully extravagant, all of the examples attest to his inimitable grasp of form, style and colour.
