Label Nurture and Mayo Clinic Study Room Design Can Enhance Patient Care

Nurture and Mayo Clinic Study: Room Design Can Enhance Patient Care

The design of a consultation room can improve the quality of an outpatient visit.

A collaborative research study, developed by Nurture by Steelcase and Mayo Clinic, was conducted to understand the extent to which a consultation room designed to support present-day clinical encounters could affect the consultation between patients and clinicians.

The results of this randomized trial, the first of its kind, will appear in the Fall issue of Health Environments Research and Design Journal (HERD).

"This study supports the notion that the space in which people meet can influence how they work together," says Victor Montori, M.D., the lead Mayo researcher.

He also says more studies in other health care systems are needed to confirm these findings.

"Helping to build a body of evidence that leads to better health care outcomes and experiences is foundational to our mission," says Joyce Bromberg, director of WorkSpace Futures Research for Steelcase.

Installations By Architects Experiments in Building and Design

Installations By Architects: Experiments in Building and Design

Over the last few decades, a rich and increasingly diverse practice has emerged in the art world that invites the public to touch, enter, and experience the work, whether it is in a gallery, on city streets, or in the landscape.

Like architecture, many of these temporary artworks aspire to alter viewers' experience of the environment.

An installation is usually the end product for an artist, but for architects it can also be a preliminary step in an ongoing design process.

Like paper projects designed in the absence of "real" architecture, installations offer architects another way to engage in issues critical to their practice.

Direct experimentation with architecture's material and social dimensions engages the public around issues in the built environment that concern them and expands the ways that architecture can participate in and impact people's everyday lives.

The first survey of its kind, Installations by Architects features fifty of the most significant projects from the last twenty-five years by today's most exciting architects, including Anderson Anderson, Philip Beesley, Diller + Scofidio, John Hejduk, Dan Hoffman, and Kuth/Ranieri Architects.

Projects are grouped in critical areas of discussion under the themes of tectonics, body, nature, memory, and public space.

Each project is supplemented by interviews with the project architects and the discussions of critics and theorists situated within a larger intellectual context.

USGBCs Rebecca Flora Honored with AIA Pittsburghs 2009 Gold Medal

USGBC's Rebecca Flora Honored with AIA Pittsburgh's 2009 Gold Medal

The U.S. Green Building Council's Senior Vice President of Education & Research, Rebecca Flora, has received the 2009 Gold Medal from the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The award, created by the AIA Pittsburgh Board of Directors, recognizes Flora's outstanding community leadership and significant contributions to the promotion of quality architectural design.

"Rebecca has been deeply involved in her local Pittsburgh community for many years, and has helped put the city on the map as a leader in green building and urban sustainability," said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, USGBC.

"We celebrate with Rebecca as she is honored with this prestigious Gold Medal."

In her role at USGBC, Flora furthers the educational mission of the Council through the development of relevant and engaging educational programming and expanding research initiatives.

The extraordinary rise in green building in recent years has accelerated the need for innovative and high-quality LEED and green building knowledge resources and training, and under Flora's helm, USGBC is helping to meet these important needs.

The Gold Medal recognizes a community leader for his or her efforts in generating policy, raising public awareness, or leading a specific effort regarding quality architectural design in the Pittsburgh region.

Role of Interior Design Centers to Be Analyzed

Role of Interior Design Centers to Be Analyzed

Design Centers International (DCI) has engaged strategic planning expert David Shepherd to lead a brainstorming session on the relationship between design centers and interior designers nationwide.

The session will be held in November at the Phoenician Hotel in Scottsdale, AZ and is for DCI members only.

Shepherd, president and CEO of Designing Profits, the nation's leading source for interior design business advice and strategies, rarely speaks publicly outside of his own company's semi-annual conferences.

However, recognizing the importance of the design center / designer relationship, he quickly made an exception after receiving DCI's invitation.

"Over the past five years," Shepherd said, "the impact of the Internet and onset of cost transparency has hammered the margins of both design centers and interior designers.

As both have done whatever was necessary to survive, some confusion - and even a little skepticism - about the relationship has arisen."

Shepherd, who is regularly in touch with hundreds of interior designers through his company's Best Practices Network (BPN) will lead a brainstorming session of representatives of many of the nation's premiere design centers.

"My goal," Shepherd continued, "is to identify a path by which these two essential partners - interior designers and design centers - can establish complementary and mutually profitable business models."

Rising Currents Projects for New Yorks Waterfront

Rising Currents: Projects for New York's Waterfront

Rising Currents: Projects for New York's Waterfront is a major project organized by The Museum of Modern Art in cooperation with P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center that will bring together four teams of architects, engineers, and landscape designers to address and create infrastructure solutions to make New York City more resilient in response to rising water levels and to protect eco-systems.

The future of New York's waterfronts has been identified as one of the most urgent challenges the nation's largest city faces, with the anticipated rise in sea levels due to climate change.

Rising Currents is organized by Barry Bergdoll, The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art.

The concept for the Rising Currents project is inspired by the forthcoming book, On the Water: Palisades Bay by Guy Nordensen, professor of structural engineering and architecture at Princeton University, a faculty associate of the University Center for Human Values, and consultant to the exhibition.

The resulting proposals-models, drawings, and analytical materials-will be presented in an exhibition at MoMA.
