![]() Architecture + Art : Crossover and CollaborationTeddy Cruz and Pedro Reyes have a history of collaboration that extends back several years, including the "Conflict Resolution" exhibition for the San Francisco Art Institute in 2008.Their shared investigations into design strategies for social transformation in globalized times propose a new synthesis for art and architecture. Their "micropolicies" examine how to resolve the urban, in sites ranging from the borderlands between Mexico and the USA to post-conflict Iraq, treating the later as a case-study in conflict, mediation and facilitation. Research into "top down" versus "bottom up" planning and action, and informal and alternative solutions, see the two combining their respective disciplines knowledge into a search for solutions at an urban level, and proposing a new relationship between art and the public. event (ended) current design events more info www.arc... ![]() Rethinking Traditional Exhibit DesignUsing an inventive visual strategy that offers the visitor an experience akin to scientists exploring nature, Volume Inc. has redefined the approach to traditional museum exhibitions for the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park.Under architect Renzo Piano's direction, Volume Inc. collaborated with a design team to create freestanding modules, which float as a seamless extension of the building's architecture. Unlike enclosed exhibits, the meandering quality of the open-air gallery encourages interaction and fosters discovery. Volume Inc. founders, Adam Brodsley and Eric Heiman, studied how people use information to tap into a lyrical approach to information delivery. Using a hierarchy inspired by specimen display cases of early science, the visual language distills information into manageable snippets, without sacrificing rich content. The "specimen box" design promotes a meaningful experience that allows the viewer to digest the exhibit based on intuition and interest level. This design solution reflects how people process content in contemporary times, offering a "2-second, 2-minute or 2-hour" visit. Housed in a contemporary cabinet of curiosities, the exploration of the "Island of Evolutions" and "Altered State: Climate Change in California" exhibits is enriched by a variety of media - specimens, videos, interactive displays, sustainable direct-to-ply prints and low-energy LED lightboxes - that support the museum's mission to protect the natural world. more www.vol... ![]() Conservation and Sustainability: Conflict or OpportunityThe Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland presents one-off special CPD event, chaired by RIAS President David Dunbar. This is an opportunity to review some of the latest Scottish and international thinking on the energy efficient adaptation of Scottish historic estate. Reconciling the need to sensitively conserve Scottish built heritage with sustainability and energy efficiency is one of the greatest contemporary challenges for the architectural profession. This event draws upon the expertise of four internationally recognised individuals whose influence in practice, innovation and legislation is crucial towards ensuring a sustainable future for the past. The recent announcement of Scotland's new energy regulations and the RIAS new / updated accreditation schemes in sustainability and conservation make this event particularly timely. event (ended) current design events more info www.ria... ![]() The Global Polis: Interactive InfrastructuresWhat is infrastructure? For much of the twentieth century, the answer to this question was guided by the ideology of functionalist urbanism, a school of thought that said that all healthy cities served four major needs - work, housing, recreation, and transportation.Today, we no longer take this view for granted, for it is a perspective that makes no provisions for community, identity, or history. At the same time, we still lack an alternative model for visualizing the city that can deal adequately with the public health and quality-of-life issues that the early functionalists sought to address. Our capacity to balance urban development with the demands of ecological imperatives and social needs has only worsened in recent decades, and this exhibition asks whether the trend can be reversed. Global Polis: Interactive Infrastructures documents a series of contemporary experiments in planning, architecture, and design that treat cities and their environments in holistic terms, as a complex social, political, and ecological matrix - not just as an assembly of buildings, roadways, bridges, pipes, and tunnels (although each of these is important). Infrastructure cannot be divorced from the structure of democracy, from the environment at large, and the contributions to this exhibition highlight the important role that community, communication, participation, and the sharing of knowledge can play in informing understanding of the urban fabric. event (ended) current design events more info cfa.aia...
