Transforming the Skyline Three Leading Women Architects

Transforming the Skyline: Three Leading Women Architects

Deborah Berke, Audrey Matlock, and Annabelle Selldorf will discuss what they have brought to one building form-the private apartment house-in a panel discussion moderated by Suzanne Stephens of Architectural Record and sponsored by the Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation as part of it's ongoing Richard H. Driehaus Series.

For decades the building of condominiums in New York has been considered the territory of commercial architects who designed banal buildings with little sensitivity to the urban milieu.

The three architects participating in "Transforming the Skyline" are innovators who will describe their specific contributions to this building type, as well as the challenges of designing architecture of quality in New York City.

Deborah Berke is a well-known New York-based architect and teacher who has recently succeeded in creating a high profile condominium via a low-keyed design strategy: 48 Bond's sleek black granite and zinc façade comes to downtown properly dressed, in black.

Audrey Matlock is in the course of completing the Chelsea Modern condominium on West 18th Street, whose zig-zag cascade of blue glass makes for an eye-catching addition to the streetscape.

Annabelle Selldorf, one of New York City's most sought after architects, is now opening her latest project, 520 West Chelsea, an 11-story residence on West 19th Street distinguished by dark bands of midnight-blue glazed terracotta.

Unfinished Spaces Cubas Architecture of Revolution

Unfinished Spaces: Cuba's Architecture of Revolution

In 1961, three young, visionary architects were commissioned by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara to create the world's most beautiful art school on the grounds of a former golf course in Havana, Cuba.

Construction of their radical designs began immediately and the school's first classes soon followed.

But construction was abruptly halted and the architects and their designs were deemed irrelevant in the prevailing political climate.

Forty years later the schools are in use, but remain unfinished and decaying.

Castro has invited the exiled architects back to finish their unrealized dream.

Their story begs the question - how dangerous can architecture be?

Join this fundraiser event to benefit the production of the documentary film Unfinished Spaces: Cuba's Architecture of Revolution.

New Kolling Research Building by HASSELL Open

New Kolling Research Building by HASSELL Open

Designed by HASSELL, the new $92m Kolling Building for Research & Education is the first project to be completed in the redevelopment of the entire Royal North Shore Hospital Campus.

The building which currently houses 350 researchers, education and animal house activities will eventually accommodate 500 researchers.

It is well connected to the new main hospital building, allowing easy flow from the acute care area to the research area for the many staff members engaged in active clinical research.

The new facility relocates medical research scientists, clinicians and educators from over twenty buildings spread across the campus into an integrated, shared facility.

The consolidation of research and education activities has created a dynamic environment with a greater capacity for teams to share knowledge as well as resources.

The Royal North Shore Hospital is renowned for its "bench to bedside" research philosophy.

This is where staff members are engaged in practical research that can be applied to patient care in areas such as cancer, pain management, diabetes and perinatal medicine.

The Kolling Building for Research & Education, named in recognition of the hospital's prestigious Kolling Institute of Medical Research, has its own architectural identity and discrete presence on site.
