 AIA Launch the 2009 Upjohn Research Initiative Call-For-SubmissionsThe American Institute of Architects seeks proposals for research projects to be completed in an 18-month period beginning December 1, 2009.The AIA will award up to four grants between $15,000 and $30,000 each, for selected projects. The research must relate to one or more domains of architectural knowledge: Leadership, Practice, Design, and Building Performance.  Tietgens Aergrelse in Copenhagen Breaks GroundGround has broken for Tony Fretton Architects' new building facing the Frederiks Kirk, known as the Marble Church, in Copenhagen.When completed in Spring 2010, the building will bring to a conclusion the historic district of Frederiksstaden which was initiated in 1749 and partially finished in 1894 by the developer C F Tietgen with the construction of the Marble Church and a square of apartments around it in the Beaux Arts style. Tietgen was never able to purchase the land and buildings to complete the northwest corner of the square, and the unfinished corner has become known as "Tietgens Aergrelse" or "The Agony of Tietgen". It is for this location that Tony Fretton Architects was commissioned by Clients Realea A/S with a specific brief to make a building of the present times that resolved the different styles and scales of the buildings in the Square. Formal approval for the project entailed public presentations and complex and detailed negotiations with the Copenhagen City Architect, the architects of the Church and the Copenhagen transport authority responsible for the construction of the new underground metro adjacent to the new building. "It has been a long process to get to this stage, which is expected when you are dealing with such a sensitive and historic location," said Peter Cederfeld of Realea A/S.  Garbage Warrior Michael Reynolds comes to Melbourne & Bendigo for State of Design FestivalA world leader in sustainable housing for over 40 years, architect Michael Reynolds will be holding two informative public talks in Victoria as part of the State of Design Festival.Michael Reynolds designs and builds homes that heat and cool themselves and built from natural and recycled materials, produce their own electricity, collect their own water, treat their own sewage and grow their own food. He is the author of seven books, the initiator of 3 off-grid communities, subject of the documentary "Garbage Warrior" and travels with his team around the world demonstrating Earthship / sustainable principles.  Foster + Partners Beijing International Airport Named Building of the YearBeijing Capital International Airport was named the "Building of the Year" by the UK's architecture sector during the prestigious AJ 100 survey and awards.The AJ100 survey, organized by The Architects' Journal magazine, polled 135 of the leading commercial design practices in the UK asking for nominations for the best single project completed in 2008. Terminal 3 at Beijing International Airport, designed by Foster + Partners, was one of five projects shortlisted for the prize, and ultimately selected as the winner by a unanimous decision from a panel of expert judges. The judges were impressed by the airport's elegant form and light-filled interior, which will create a memorable and inspiring environment for the 50 million passengers who will travel through the terminal by 2020. The jury felt that the new terminal building incorporates subtle references to Chinese architectural traditions, giving it a strong sense of place. Integrated public transport and short walking distances for passengers have also been carefully addressed in the design, and the jury also recognized the challenge of delivering such a technically complex building in this location. more aj100.a...
