![]() Making Modern: SAIC Graduate Design ExhibitionShowcasing design from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's (SAIC) department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects (AIADO), Making Modern brings together work by recent AIADO graduate students in the department's inaugural master's thesis exhibition.Included will be special projects featured during Milan's Salone Internazionale del Mobile in April, the highly regarded "Objects for the Age of Obama," "2000 Watt Living," and "The Expanding Classroom," which will be joined by "Objects That Entertain Us," a collaboration with Dupont Corian that will move to Making Modern following the annual NeoCon World's Trade Fair, held in Chicago's nearby Merchandise Mart from June 15-17. In antiquity, "modernism" meant confronting magic and replacing it with the plough, the sword, the house, and the ship. For the thesis work presented in Making Modern, to "be modern" means reuniting with eco-scapes, city-scapes, and all the varied "'scapes" of conscience, technology, and mobility. Making Modern will showcase buildings, objects, and systems where humans are part of the globe's many entwined layers - helping to choreograph this connectivity without the need for dominion. event (ended) current design events more Making Modern: SAIC Graduate Design Exhibition design directory SAIC: School of the Art Institute of Chicago > Art Education added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Invisible Process: Exhibition of Japanese Contemporary Architecture in Lisbon"(In)visible Process" tries to show in the Japanese context how an architecture project evolves - from the idea till its construction.A mutating process that depends on the clients needs, on the architects concepts, among other public and private entities that participate and also determine in which direction the project develops. To be able to show the "backstage" of an architecture project, gives an opportunity to the common audience to understand, to question and reflect on imperceptible issues vital on this process and to the Portuguese architects that can identify themselves and relate to this specific theme. event (ended) current design events more info www.any... ![]() Surf's Up! New Macaulay Sinclair Project Makes Big WavesNottingham-based interior architects and designers Macaulay Sinclair has put their flag firmly in South Coast sand after customers began flocking to one of the UK's most exciting new bar and restaurants - Urban Reef at Boscombe Bay, Dorset.Opened to the public on Thursday May 15th, Lead Designer John Macaulay has successfully blended a destination restaurant, decked external terrace, bar, cafe and deli outlet to deliver a vibrant social hub at the home of Europe's first artificial surf reef. Taking the building's architecture as his starting point, Macaulay has used eye-catching design references and colour palettes from the 1950's including furniture, materials and finishes. "We looked at, and were influenced, by 1950's transport posters, advertisements and seaside resort branding," explained Macaulay. "As a result, on the ground floor, the colours are energetic and snappy, which also echoes the pace of the offering. The design forms are simple, efficient and functional referencing the simplicity and functionality of post-war furniture. We've also referenced post-war Britain's renewed relationship with the seaside by using beach huts and weatherboarding." more Surf's Up!
