Widening the boundaries of Place d'Armes, connecting it to underground passages, revealing four centuries of history, creating an open space on a human scale, highlighting the architectural diversity surrounding the Place These are some features of the daring, inventive proposals submitted by the three teams of renowned designers from Montreal, Berlin and Buenos Aires invited to take part in the recent "Imaginer la place d'Armes" UNESCO Urban Design Workshop.
"Place d'Armes is the gateway to Old Montreal and draws attention to the built heritage surrounding it, such as the Notre-Dame Basilica and the Aldred Building.
It is deserving of a high-quality development worthy of its value as an emblematic public space," said Christine St-Pierre, Quebec Minister of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women.
"The proposals put forward by the three design teams offer fascinating perspectives and demonstrate that quality design and the vital input of creative professionals are important components of urban planning.
I thank all the members of the three teams for their contributions to this think-tank exercise."
For his part, Andre Lavallee, City of Montreal Executive Committee Member Responsible for Urban Planning and Transportation, declared: "I am extremely proud of the quality of the proposals submitted by the three design teams.
The challenge they met together was daunting, because they had to take a new, enlightened view of Place d'Armes, which for centuries has been one of the city's liveliest and busiest gathering places."

A panel discussion held November 7 in Chicago, and hosted by Autodesk and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), cited the need to promote and increase education on sustainable design to develop the talent necessary to reach the green goals set forth by the 2030 Initiative and other international efforts.
Held in conjunction with the Greenbuild 2007 Expo in Chicago, the panel, moderated by Susan Szenasy, editor-in-chief of Metropolis magazine, included S. Richard Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chairman of the USGBC; Phil Bernstein, vice president of Industry Strategy and Relations, Autodesk; Sadhu Johnston, deputy chief of staff, City of Chicago; and Edward Mazria, executive director, Architecture 2030.
Highlights of the panel discussion include architect-turned activist Mazria's challenge to the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector to make all new buildings carbon-neutral by 2030.
Mazria stated that the keys to success for reaching the 2030 target are early education of architecture and engineering students about sustainable design practices and increased collaboration between state and federal government, architects, engineers, regulatory agencies and building suppliers to avoid a global warming crisis through policy change and education.

Van Alen Institute announced the Living City, an exhibition by New York Prize Fellows David Benjamin and Soo-in Yang.
In the future, walls will breathe and buildings will talk to one another.
Construction materials and systems that have been inert for thousands of years will respond in real-time to the dynamic conditions of their surrounding environments and to a larger network of data.
Architecture will come to life and create a Living City.
Living City is a large-scale installation of a building skin designed to breathe in response to air quality.
During their tenure as Van Alen Institute Fellows, Benjamin and Yang have been developing one of the first full-scale architecture prototypes to link local responses in a building to a distributed network of sensors throughout the city.
The prototype will be based at Van Alen Institute's public gallery and will communicate wirelessly with air quality sensors around New York City, moving in response to information the sensors collect.
Using the city as a research lab, Benjamin and Yang propose an architecture that functions as a public interface to urban air quality, creating a platform for an ecology of building skins where individual buildings receive, share and respond to data as part of a collective network.

New York City's next great retail corner, at the intersection of 72nd Street and Broadway - directly across from one of the busiest and most iconic subway stations in all of Manhattan - has just broken ground.
To be known simply as 72nd and Broadway, the new shopping hub rising at 2075 Broadway, at the southwest corner of 72nd Street, will consist of nearly 48,000 square feet of prime retail space.
The visionary retail development is a joint venture between Philips International and Rhodes NY.
It will offer retailers extraordinary visibility and exposure with 22-foot high ground floor ceilings and glass storefronts with 200 feet of wraparound frontage.
The Upper West Side is already a 24/7 shopping magnet, where popular neighborhood retailers, such as Barneys Co-Op, Intermix, Theory, The North Face, Lucky Brand Jeans, Sephora, Urban Outfitters, Swatch, Fairway and Citarella, are flourishing.
72nd and Broadway is poised to add to the area's thriving retail.
"There are very few spots in Manhattan that offer the exposure 2075 Broadway will and a design that offers incredible visibility," said Robert K. Futterman, chairman & CEO of Robert K. Futterman & Associates, the exclusive leasing agent on the project.
"2075 Broadway is a fabulous location to reach the young, affluent residents and shoppers of the Upper West Side."
