Ieoh Ming Pei to Receive the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture

The Chinese-born American architect I. M. Pei, who is best known in Europe for his transformation of the Louvre in Paris, has been named today as the recipient of one of the world's most prestigious architecture prizes, the Royal Gold Medal.

Given in recognition of a lifetime's work, the Royal Gold Medal is approved personally by Her Majesty the Queen and is given to a person or group of people who have had a significant influence "either directly or indirectly on the advancement of architecture".

I. M. Pei is one of the most prolific architects of all time having completed over 170 projects and more than 50 masterplans.

At the age of 92, he remains actively engaged in architecture.

His work easily spans the divide between commercial and cultural architecture, and he is equally respected and sought after by clients in all fields.

Ieoh Ming Pei (always known as I. M.) is a Chinese American architect, born in China in 1917.

He travelled to the United States in 1935 to study architecture, and never returned to live in his home country.

He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and received a Masters degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he studied under Gropius and Breuer, coming under the influence of the International Style which was to inspire his work for almost 70 years.

RIBA Announces 12 Honorary Fellowships

RIBA Announces 12 Honorary Fellowships

The Royal Institute of British Architects' (RIBA) Council today approved 12 new Honorary Fellowships of the RIBA, to men and women from a wide range of backgrounds, including journalism, architectural education, engineering and surveying.

RIBA Honorary Fellowships reward the particular contributions people have made to architecture in its broadest sense: its promotion, administration and outreach; its role in building more sustainable communities; and finally its role in the education of future generations.

The lifetime honour, conferred annually, allows recipients to use the initials Hon FRIBA after their name.

The RIBA International Fellowships will be presented at a ceremony at the RIBA in London in February 2010.

"All of these people have done much for architecture, whether as practitioners or commentators," said Ruth Reed, President of RIBA.

"In their very different ways, they have helped to improve the quality of design and influence the delivery of the built environment in a sustainable and creative way.

The RIBA values all their contributions and I look forward to working with each of them in the future."

Frank Gehry Discusses Green Designs

Frank Gehry Discusses Green Designs

Last Thursday at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, famed architect Frank Gehry discussed modern challenges in architecture, including sustainability, software, and Larry Summers.

Gehry was joined by Joe Brown, CEO of AECOM Design and Planning, a company geared towards promoting environmental and ecological design.

Gehry was quick to indicate that he has no plans to jump on any sustainable architecture bandwagon.

"Don't just run off with every fad-the green thing is very important, but some of us have been thinking of it for a while," he said.

"I did an interview in 1969 and I talked about it, and now a few guys are capitalizing on it and making hay.

The only way to solve things is by political intervention."
