Luminous Networks SCI-Arc Designed Sustainability Program for Los Angeles Chinatown on View

Luminous Networks: SCI-Arc Designed Sustainability Program for Los Angeles' Chinatown on View

The Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) has created a pilot program for sustainability for Los Angeles' Chinatown.

In the exhibition Luminous Networks opening Saturday, April 25 at Automat, and on view through May 9, 2009, SCI-Arc students present design solutions for a sustainable public space on the popular Chung King Road.

The project began in January 2009 as part of the Sustainable Strategies seminar led by SCI-Arc professor and architect Alexis Rochas.

The class worked with the Chung King Plaza Business Association to investigate public space in urban environments that promote social, environmental and economic sustainability.

SCI-Arc students were asked to address three strands that are the base of sustainable principles: renewable energy, water efficiency and accessibility.

Each strand resembles the morphology of a Chinese Dragon, a cultural symbol of auspicious power.

SCI-Arc's proposal weaves together West Plaza Court, Chung King Road North and Chung King Road South into one cohesive and continuous space.

The proposed site would include: a Tea House, a learning space formed by tiered seating, shaded areas for social interaction, a green landscaping mat, and a Wishing Well fountain. A lighting system would provide enhanced security and accent diverse gathering areas.

Renewable energy would be collected through photovoltaic panels.

Jump-Start Your Marketing Effort

Jump-Start Your Marketing Effort

In the current economic climate, it's more important than ever for architects to promote their work and their firms strategically and tactically.

Marketing communications and targeted business development activities go hand in hand, requiring the highest level of commitment from firm leaders.

While many firms engage professional marketing staff and/or consultants to lead their marketing efforts, the direct participation of principals and technical staff is crucial.

The reconstituted AIA Marketing & Public Relations Committee presents a workshop for firms of all sizes to provide chapter members and non-member architects with a comprehensive introduction to marketing and public relations.

Four short, focused presentations followed by discussion will address marketing communications, business development, public relations strategies, and presentations and the interview process.

This event is intended for firm principals, leaders, and technical / professional staff to give you the tools you need to advance your marketing efforts.

Allplan 2009 for Cost-optimized and Sustainable Design Processes

Nemetschek Allplan announced Allplan 2009, the leading AEC platform (Architecture, Engineering & Construction) for 3D building modeling with quantity takeoff and cost determination.

The current version contains new tools for renovation and conversion planning, as well as for environmentally friendly and sustainable building projects.

With an emphasis on user-friendliness, Allplan 2009 sets new standards in interdisciplinary cooperation: the integrated product family enables users to work on a virtual building model covering everything from architecture design to structural planning, building services and cost planning.

High-performance interfaces also enable efficient communication and coordination processes.

"Modern design and building projects are extremely complex.

They require integrated planning methods that connect architects, engineers, design professionals, tenderers, cost assessors and construction clients.

With Allplan 2009, we provide an integrated solution that enables interdisciplinary cooperation among all project members using a shared database.

This decisively improves the efficiency of building modeling", explains Peter Mehlstaubler, CEO of Nemetschek Allplan GmbH.
