![]() EWI Worldwide Designs Next Generation Gaming Retail Experience for Play N TradeEWI Worldwide unveiled last week its new store design for Play N Trade, one of the world's fastest growing video game retailers.Developed by the company's Interior Works service group, the store represents the next generation retail experience for the gaming industry, featuring an engaging interactive environment, exclusive Player's Club area, intuitive way-finding and improved category management. "We believe that our experience-based store design raises the bar for our industry, and will set new standards in gaming retail," says Larry Plotnick, chief executive officer, Play N Trade. The company plans to launch its first prototype store in Chicago, this month, and roll out a total of 140 stores by the end of this year. By 2013, Plotnick projects 750 showrooms nationwide, tripling the number currently in operation. Driving its design development, EWI Worldwide conducted extensive field research in multiple video game retail venues and launched a multi-market study which engaged four different segments of consumers (male and female 17-25, male 25-40 and parents of kids 8-15). By using observational, survey and consumer ideation methodologies, the research provided insight into the minds of today's gamers, leading to design solutions that balance and meet the needs of new video game shoppers, as well as Play N Trade franchise owners and managers. more EWI Worldwide Designs Next Generation Gaming Retail Experience for Play N Trade design directory EWI Worldwide > Exhibition Design Companies added by Levent OZLER |

The award, sponsored by CABE, is for imaginatively designed streets that work for people. Pedestrians can move freely across the whole area of New Road and the design includes attractive seating and new lighting which creates a lively atmosphere for pedestrians at night. ![]() Winner Chosen in Northwich Vision Cultural Centre CompetitionDLA Architecture has been chosen as the winners of the competition to design a new Cultural Centre in Northwich.Their scheme, "The Salt Market" was chosen through a two stage competition which in the first stage attracted over 100 entries from architects all over the world. The competition set entrants the challenge of coming up with design concepts for a new Cultural Centre that would provide a focus for community activity within mid Cheshire, providing a range of public activities including galleries, performance, dance, restaurant and tourist information. DLA's scheme was selected as the judges' preferred design at a final judging session which involved interviews and presentations with five shortlisted teams. This session was preceded by an extensive public consultation where the shortlisted schemes were displayed in Northwich Town Centre for public comment. The DLA design takes its inspiration from the idea of a medieval meeting place, reinvented as a transparent and animated space where people can come together to meet, eat, drink, shop, relax, learn and be inspired. The judges were attracted to the mix of tradition and contemporary design and the opportunities for enhancing the streetscape of this part of the town. more Winner Chosen in Northwich Vision Cultural Centre Competition design directory DLA Architecture > Architecture Companies added by Levent OZLER |
![]() First Survey of Affordable Housing DesignThe first national survey of the design quality of affordable housing shows that while nearly two thirds (61 per cent) was judged to be "average", a fifth of schemes (21 per cent) was rated "poor" and 18 per cent of schemes was judged either "good" or "very good".The Affordable Housing Survey of 218 schemes was commissioned by the Housing Corporation, now part of the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), and produced by CABE. It looked at the whole place: not only the buildings, but the streets, play spaces, recreation areas and transport links. Schemes often performed well in terms of architectural quality, public realm, and the tenure and accommodation mix. Many also outperformed statutory minimum criteria such as building regulations. But other design aspects were weaker, such as a lack of distinctiveness, and designs which do not respond to their context. Many schemes were difficult to find your way around or had poor access to local amenities such as shops and health centres. A sizeable number failed to show the flexibility that would allow them to be adapted or extended in the future. The survey creates a baseline for the quality of affordable housing. Better results can be expected if in the future schemes are subject to minimum Building for Life standards (which were stipulated by Housing Corporation design standards). The survey is a nationally representative sample of the output of Registered Social Landlord development partnerships commissioned under the Housing Corporation's 2004-06 and 2006-08 investment programmes. more www.hom...
